Daily assessments of behavioral economic indices and drinking among rural-residing adults with at-risk drinking.

In a secondary analysis among adults with at-risk drinking who live in rural areas (N = 75; 62.7% Female; 98.7% White), we examined the predictive ability of behavioral economic (BE) indices (demand, delay discounting, and proportion of alcohol-free activities) for next-day alcohol use via daily surveys across the range of alcohol use severity. These relations were tested using linear mixed-effects models, including evaluating the interaction of BE indices with alcohol use severity. In unadjusted analyses, proportion of alcohol-free activities (β [95% CI]: -0.022 [-0.038, -0.006]), demand inte…

Real-time impaired control over drinking: The role of contextual influences during naturally occurring drinking episodes.

BACKGROUND: Impaired control over drinking is a central feature of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), yet little within-person research on impaired control is available. As a result, there is little research regarding the dynamic impact of social drinking context on impaired control. The current study sought to fill these gaps, testing a sequential mediation model wherein social drinking context predicted episode-specific deviations in perceived impaired control, which indirectly predicted daily negative consequences via drinking more than planned. We also modeled if estimated blood alcohol concentra…

Drinking to cope as a mechanism between sleep problems and heavy episodic drinking among trauma survivors.

Objective: Women who have experienced trauma report high rates of heavy episodic drinking (HED) and sleep problems. Prior work suggests that poor sleep exacerbates heavy alcohol use; however, potential mechanisms for this association are unclear. Consistent with the self-medication model, one possibility may be that women with a history of trauma are drinking at increased rates in order to cope with the affective consequences of poor sleep. To examine this possibility, the current study tested the role of drinking to cope motives as a mediator of prospective associations between sleep problems…

Contingent gambling-drinking patterns and problem drinking severity moderate implicit gambling-alcohol associations in problem gamblers.

Although problem gambling and problem drinking often co-occur, the processes underlying this association are not well understood. This study investigated the effects of contingent gambling-drinking patterns and problem drinking severity on implicit gambling-alcohol associations. Participants were 144 (34 female) problem gamblers. The South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) measured severity of problem gambling. The Brief Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (BMAST) measured severity of problem drinking. The Implicit Association Test (Greenwald, McGhee, & Schwartz, 1998, Journal of Personality and Social …

Water-intake volume regulation in the rat: schedule-induced drinking compared with water-deprivation-induced drinking.

Hungry rats drink extremely large amounts of water when they are intermittently fed small amount of food (schedule-induced polydipsia). Are such animals motivated to drink for long durations, to ingest large amounts of fluid, or to do both? When drinking-tube apertures were decreased to slow the rate of water ingestion, each of eight rats spent more time drinking (M = 11.5 min) than when larger apertures were used (M = 7.8 min). The mean volumes ingested were not different. These equal volumes were generated by adjustment of each drink duration in accordance with ingestion rate even during the…

Social anxiety and drinking game participation among university students: the moderating role of drinking to cope.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the relationship of social anxiety with drinking game participation. Drinking games represent a popular form of drinking in university settings. Due to their structure, games may appeal to socially anxious drinkers, particularly among those seeking to fit in or cope with the social setting. OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationship of social anxiety with frequency of drinking game participation among a university undergraduate sample and to investigate if drinking motives moderate this association. METHOD: A total of 227 undergraduate students aged 18-24 y…

Sexual assault, drinking norms, and drinking behavior among a national sample of lesbian and bisexual women.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and adolescent/adult sexual assault (ASA) are strongly associated with women's alcohol use and the rates of both alcohol use and sexual assault history are higher among lesbian and bisexual women than heterosexual women. Although descriptive drinking norms are one of the highest predictors of alcohol use in emerging adults, this is the first study to examine the relationship between sexual assault history, drinking norms, and alcohol use in lesbian and bisexual women. We found that CSA severity was associated with a higher likelihood of experiencing more severe alc…

Brief motivational intervention for college drinking: the synergistic impact of social anxiety and perceived drinking norms.

Despite the efficacy of Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS), students with higher social anxiety appear vulnerable to poorer outcomes. A possible explanation for these outcomes is that corrective normative feedback (an active component of BASICS) may be less effective for socially anxious students if their beliefs about others' drinking are less malleable because of intense fear of negative evaluation for deviating from perceived drinking norms. This study evaluated whether socially anxious students demonstrated less change in perceived norms during BASICS. W…

A national assessment of on-premise drinking establishments near public universities: Drink prices, drink specials, indoor tobacco use, and state-level alcohol laws.

BACKGROUND: Inexpensive drinks and price promotions increase alcohol consumption and have been observed at on-premise drinking establishments near large colleges. Some bars may sell tobacco products and allow indoor tobacco use to encourage patrons to stay and drink more. This study examined drink prices/specials and associated practices of on-premise drinking establishments including tobacco sales and policies regarding tobacco use. METHODS: In 2018, telephone calls about prices/practices were made to 403 randomly selected bars/nightclubs within 2 miles of large residential universities in e…

Energy drinks, hypertension and stroke.

A man in his 50s, normally fit and well, had an ischaemic thalamic stroke confirmed on MRI, manifesting with left-sided weakness, numbness and ataxia. Admission BP was 254/150 mm Hg. All tests for secondary hypertension were normal. After 72 hours as an inpatient, starting antihypertensives reduced the systolic BP to 170 mm Hg; however, after discharge, his BP rose again and remained persistently high despite up-titration of antihypertensives to five medications. After further questioning, the patient revealed an average daily consumption of eight cans of energy drink, each containing 160 mg c

Binge Drinking's Effects on the Body.

Studies have focused on the effects of chronic alcohol consumption and the mechanisms of tissue injury underlying alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis, with less focus on the pathophysiological consequences of binge alcohol consumption. Alcohol binge drinking prevalence continues to rise, particularly among individuals ages 18 to 24. However, it is also frequent in individuals ages 65 and older. High blood alcohol levels achieved with this pattern of alcohol consumption are of particular concern, as alcohol can permeate to virtually all tissues in the body, resulting in significant alterations in…

Drinking "Vodka" or vodka - This is a question.

"Vodka" i.e. 2-methyl-2-butanol (2M2B) is growing in popularity as a substance of abuse, especially among East European youngsters. At present, there is not much data regarding its toxicity both in humans and animals. The direct effect of 2M2B on human tissue was evaluated and compared to that of two other alcohols (ethanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol). The used concentrations corresponded to those obtained from consumers of 2M2B. The experiments were carried out on HEK293 cell line with the use of the following techniques: MTT test, phase contrast and fluorescent microscopy. The MTT test indicated th

Drinking in the age of the Great Recession.

The United States has been experiencing the most severe economic crisis since the Great Depression. This article presents the Life Change Consequences of the Great Recession (LCCGR), an instrument depicting work and personal life-related stressors reflecting the enduring effects of the Great Recession. A national sample of 663 respondents completed a mail survey including this instrument and measures of drinking outcomes. Multiple regression analyses addressed the links between the LCCGR and drinking. Economy-related stressors manifested significant effects on both male and female consumptions…
