Outside of the antibiotics, numerous general medications are prescribed in the context of the treatment of periodontal diseases. It appeared to be of interest to study them. The international research on anti-inflammatory drugs will be analysed in the literature. An in-depth study will then be carried out on documents provided by laboratories which market products likely to be active on periodontal diseases in France. All the publications concerning Imudon, Piascledine 300 and Insadol will be more particularly analysed. The operative protocols, conditions and experimentation, as well as the re

Convergent focus groups, a qualitative research methodology, were used to determine what general practitioners considered to be the main obstacles and disincentives to the effective management of persons with drug and alcohol problems. Seven groups were conducted, involving 44 general practitioners whose practices were based in representative parts of metropolitan Sydney and a rural area of New South Wales. The study revealed that most doctors are not as threatened, resistant or pessimistic about drug and alcohol intervention as much of the previous work in the area would suggest. However, the

The phenothiazines are among the most widely used drugs to treat symptoms commonly associated with acute and chronic psychoses. One of the commonly prescribed compounds within this class of drugs is thioridazine, available both as a generic product as well as the innovator product, Mellaril. Each of these products is coded as bioequivalent and consequently therapeutically equivalent by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A recent issue of this journal contained an article that raised a number of questions concerning the bioequivalence of the generic versions of thioridazine that have been

A 12-month prospective survey was undertaken of all 239 problem drug users known to general practitioners in Bristol and the doctors' attitudes towards them. The drug users were predominantly young, aged 15-35 years, and males outnumbered females by approximately two to one. Seventy-eight per cent had problems associated with opiates, almost invariably heroin, 10% had problems with stimulants (mainly amphetamine powder), and others had problems with hallucinogens, cannabis, barbiturates and solvents. Opiate dependence was the commonest single problem but ill health, hepatitis, psychiatric illn

Twenty-one rats were trained to discriminate 32 mg/kg caffeine from saline in a two-lever drug discrimination task (variable ratio) while another ten rats were trained to discriminate 56 mg/kg theophylline from saline. For each group, dose-effect curves (% drug-lever responses and overall response rate) were obtained for both caffeine and theophylline. Significant dose-related generalization of each training drug was found for both the caffeine- and theophylline-trained rats. Concomitant dose-related decreases in overall response rate also were apparent. Similar dose-related effects were seen

A survey was made of drug prescriptions written for all medical/surgical patients in a general hospital on a single weekday in 1978. Of these 348 patients, 195 were over the age of 60. In this elderly group, 62 (32 percent) were receiving psychoactive drugs. Flurazepam was the drug most commonly prescribed (in 63 percent of the patients). Diazepam was the most frequently prescribed nonhypnotic psychoactive drug (in 29 percent). Neuroleptic drugs and phenothiazine anti-emetics (in 52 percent) were not prescribed for psychosis but for augmenting analgesia and sedation and for reducing nausea. Th

Fixed drug eruption (FDE) is a cutaneous adverse drug reaction characterized by the onset of rash at a fixed location on the body each time a specific medication is ingested. With each recurrence, the eruption can involve additional sites. Lesions can have overlying vesicles and/or bullae, and when they cover a significant percentage of body surface area, the eruption is referred to as generalized bullous fixed drug eruption (GBFDE). Due to the widespread skin denudation that can be seen in this condition, GBFDE may be confused clinically with Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysi

Treatment options in epilepsy have increased dramatically since the early 1990s with the introduction of nine new generation antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) (felbamate, gabapentin, lamotrigine, levetiracetam, oxcarbazepine, tiagabine, topiramate, vigabatrin and zonisamide). This makes drug selection much more complicated and challenging. This review discusses drug selection in patients with newly diagnosed epilepsy and in particular the role of new AEDs in this population. The choice of treatment should always be based on a careful comparison of the risk-benefit ratio for the different treatment op

BACKGROUND: Following a drug eruption, patients and their doctors need to know which drugs can be safely administered for subsequent illnesses. Currently available laboratory tests are unable to answer this question in a clinically meaningful manner.
AIMS: To describe our use of oral provocation tests to provide a list of safe drugs to patients.
METHODS: We studied the records of 100 patients who underwent oral provocation testing in our department between 2003 and 2009. All patients were admitted to hospital and drugs were administered under supervision, one drug per day. A dermatologist ev

OBJECTIVE: To analyze prescriptions in a general-practitioner database over 1 year to determine the frequency, the characteristics, and the monitoring of the severe potential drug-drug interactions (DDIs).
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical records from 16 general practitioners in the Veneto region, an area in northern Italy. The study covered the period from January 1 to December 31, 2004. We selected all severe and well-documented interactions according to the book Drug Interaction Facts by David S. Tatro (Facts and Comparisons, St. Louis, MO, 2006). We grouped severe potenti

BACKGROUND: Generalized bullous fixed drug eruption (GBFDE) is a severe cutaneous adverse reaction characterized by widespread plaques with bullae. Although regarded as less severe than Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS/TEN), emerging reports suggest GBFDE may be similarly life-threatening. Comprehensive characterization of GBFDE remains lacking.
OBJECTIVE: To review the epidemiology, causative agents, clinical features, histology, outcomes, and management of GBFDE.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews

Malaria is caused by parasites of the Plasmodium genus and remains one of the most pressing human health problems. The spread of parasites resistant to or partially resistant to single or multiple drugs, including frontline antimalarial artemisinin and its derivatives, poses a serious threat to current and future malaria control efforts. In vitro drug assays are important for identifying new antimalarial compounds and monitoring drug resistance. Due to its robustness and ease of use, the [3H]-hypoxanthine incorporation assay is still considered a gold standard and is widely applied, despite li

BTK inhibitors (BTKis) are established standards of care in multiple B-cell malignancies including chronic lymphocytic leukemia, mantle cell lymphoma, and Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia. The first-generation BTKi ibrutinib demonstrated superiority over standard chemoimmunotherapy regimens in multiple randomized trials but is limited by cardiovascular side effects such as atrial fibrillation and hypertension. Second-generation BTKis have improved selectivity and demonstrate reduced rates of cardiovascular complications in 3 head-to-head ibrutinib studies. The emergence of BTK C481S mutation has

BACKGROUND: Studies including diagnostic workups on true drug allergy in children are limited.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the frequency of confirmed drug allergy in children with a history of suspected drug allergy who had applied to the general pediatric outpatient clinics of our hospital owing to various health problems.
METHODS: The history of drug allergy was asked among children who applied to the general pediatric outpatient clinics of our hospital. Allergy tests were performed to confirm drug allergy in children whose history was compatible with drug allergy.
RESULTS: In this study, pare

Although approximately 10%-15% of patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE)/genetic generalized epilepsy remain drug-resistant, there is no consensus or established concept regarding the underlying mechanisms and prevalence. This review summarizes the recent data and the current hypotheses on mechanisms that may contribute to drug-resistant IGE. A literature search was conducted in PubMed and Embase for studies on mechanisms of drug resistance published since 1980. The literature shows neither consensus on the definition nor a widely accepted model to explain drug resistance in IGE o

The use of next generation sequencing has the power to expedite the identification of drug resistance determinants and biomarkers and was applied successfully to drug resistance studies in Leishmania. This allowed the identification of modulation in gene expression, gene dosage alterations, changes in chromosome copy numbers and single nucleotide polymorphisms that correlated with resistance in Leishmania strains derived from the laboratory and from the field. An impressive heterogeneity at the population level was also observed, individual clones within populations often differing in both gen
