Intensimetric detection of distortion product otoacoustic emissions with ear canal calibration.

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) have been accurately measured with an intensimetric technique, involving simultaneous measure of pressure and velocity in the ear canal, which allows one to correctly calibrate both the input stimuli and the otoacoustic emission (OAE) level. Suitable combinations of standard intensimetric quantities, active intensity and power density [Stanzial, Shiffrer, and Sacchi, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 131, 269-280 (2012)], are used to equalize the stimuli transmitted to the middle ear, and to estimate the DPOAE level emitted by the eardrum. The DPOAE intensim…

Familial lateral semicircular canal malformation with external and middle ear abnormalities.

We report a family with inner ear lateral semicircular canal (LSC) malformation and external and middle ear abnormalities. The family had no history of known syndromes or toxic exposures. Distinct phenotypic manifestations were found in three family members. A young girl exhibited bilateral LSC malformation with a right-sided preauricular tag, a mildly deformed auricle, a stenotic external auditory canal, and a constricted middle ear cavity. She had moderate conductive hearing loss in the right ear but normal hearing in the left ear. Her younger brother exhibited right-sided LSC malformation,

Clinical application of auditory nerve responses recorded from the ear canal.

The practicality of recording auditory nerve responses in the routine practice of an otologist is demonstrated. Such recordings are particularly useful when the course of treatment requires a distinction between central or peripheral disorders. They are also helpful when it is difficult to obtain a valid audiogram. The electrical recordings from the auditory nerve can, in combination with standard audiological, otological and neurological examinations, present a more accurate picture of the patient's condition.

Application of modified transmastoid approach methods to congenital atresia of the external ear canal with middle ear infection.

OBJECTIVE: To present our surgical technique for congenital atresia of the external ear canal with middle ear infection. METHODS: A modified transmastoid approach to congenital atresia of the external ear canal with middle ear infection was applied. Our method is to visualize the landmarks of the mastoid cavity such as the antrum, sinodural angle and digastric ridge by the canal-open method to avoid facial nerve injury and then prepare a relatively large external ear canal with reconstruction of the posterior wall of the external ear canal. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: This method is suitable not…

Optical measurements of eardrum vibrations and sound propagation in the ear canal for the fitting of active middle ear implants.

BACKGROUND: Middle ear implants (MEI) are for the medical rehabilitation of the hearing function in case of sound conduction hearing losses as well as cochlear hearing losses and their combinations. OBJECTIVES: An objective tool to reach the best fitting of the external worn sound processors is essential for patients who do not want or cannot participate in the fitting process. METHODS: In addition to Laser-Doppler-Vibrometry (LDV) measurement, the sound pressure was measured distant to the eardrum to attain additional information for comparison. Three groups of patients with different middl

Give ears some respite from regular microsuctioning in bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis of the external ear canal.

BACKGROUND: This paper reports a case series of three elderly patients who were regularly attending ENT clinic every four to six weeks for ear canal care to address chronic otitis externa. All three patients had been taking bisphosphonate alendronic acid for years, and it is suspected that this drug was partly to blame for the progression of their chronic ear conditions. RESULTS: Some improvements were noted when the bisphosphonate was discontinued. The regular microsuctioning, and application of topical antibiotics with steroids, provided temporary relief of symptoms. The present pandemic sh…

Classification, registration and segmentation of ear canal impressions using convolutional neural networks.

Today, fitting bespoke hearing aids involves injecting silicone into patients' ears to produce ear canal molds. These are subsequently 3D scanned to create digital ear canal impressions. However, before digital impressions can be used they require a substantial amount of effort in manual 3D editing. In this article, we present computational methods to pre-process ear canal impressions. The aim is to create automation tools to assist the hearing aid design, manufacturing and fitting processes as well as normalizing anatomical data to assist the study of the outer ear canal's morphology. The met…

Traumatic brain injury induced by exposure to blast overpressure via ear canal.

Exposure to explosive shockwave often leads to blast-induced traumatic brain injury in military and civilian populations. Unprotected ears are most often damaged following exposure to blasts. Although there is an association between tympanic membrane perforation and TBI in blast exposure victims, little is known about how and to what extent blast energy is transmitted to the central nervous system via the external ear canal. The present study investigated whether exposure to blasts directed through the ear canal causes brain injury in Long-Evans rats. Animals were exposed to a single blast (0-…

Removal of external ear canal exostoses by piezo surgery: a novel technique.

BACKGROUND: External auditory canal exostoses are known to occur in patients who engage in cold-water sports. Although the majority of patients with exostosis remain asymptomatic, larger lesions can cause wax impaction, conductive hearing loss and predispose to recurrent otitis externa. OBJECTIVE: A novel technique is described of using a piezo saw to excise exostoses that are symptomatic. The piezo saw is used to perform various procedures, but its use in removing exostoses has not been described in the literature. CONCLUSION: Excision of exostoses of the ear canal using a piezo saw is a sa…
