Resilient Communities: The Role of Biofilms in Salmonella enterica Ecology, Persistence and Pathogenesis.

Salmonella enterica is a major global foodborne pathogen whose success across environmental, agricultural and host-associated niches is closely linked to its ability to form biofilms. Importantly, biofilm formation capacity varies substantially among S. enterica serovars, with broad-host-range serovars such as Salmonella typhimurium and Salmonella enteritidis typically exhibiting robust curli- and cellulose-based biofilms, while host-restricted serovars and recently evolved invasive lineages may display reduced or altered biofilm phenotypes. In this review, we synthesise current knowledge on t

"Sea Water" Supplemented with Calcium Phosphate and Magnesium Sulfate in a Long-Term Miller-Type Experiment Yields Sugars, Nucleic Acids Bases, Nucleosides, Lipids, Amino Acids, and Oligopeptides.

The standard approach to exploring prebiotic chemistry is to use a small number of highly purified reactants and to attempt to optimize the conditions required to produce a particular end product. However, purified reactants do not exist in nature. We have previously proposed that what drives prebiotic evolution are complex chemical ecologies. Therefore, we have begun to explore what happens if one substitutes "sea water", with its complex mix of minerals and salts, for distilled water in the classic Miller experiment. We have also adapted the apparatus to permit it to be regassed at regular i

Microplastic biofilms in water treatment systems: Fate and risks of pathogenic bacteria, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and antibiotic resistance genes.

Microplastics (MPs) biofilms in drinking water and wastewater treatment plants (DWTPs and WWTPs) have gained increasing attention due to their potential to come into close contact with humans. This review examines the fate of pathogenic bacteria, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in MP biofilms and their impacts on operations in DWTPs and WWTPs, as well as the associated microbial risks for ecology and human health. The literature shows that pathogenic bacteria, ARBs, and ARGs with high resistance can persist on MP surfaces and may escape treatment pla

Cryptic vector divergence masks vector-specific patterns of infection: an example from the marine cycle of Lyme borreliosis.

Vector organisms are implicated in the transmission of close to a third of all infectious diseases. In many cases, multiple vectors (species or populations) can participate in transmission but may contribute differently to disease ecology and evolution. The presence of cryptic vector populations can be particularly problematic as differences in infection can be difficult to evaluate and may lead to erroneous evolutionary and epidemiological inferences. Here, we combine site-occupancy modeling and molecular assays to evaluate patterns of infection in the marine cycle of Lyme borreliosis, involv

Carbohydrate-based species recognition in sea urchin fertilization: another avenue for speciation?

Spawning marine invertebrates are excellent models for studying fertilization and reproductive isolating mechanisms. To identify variation in the major steps in sea urchin gamete recognition, we studied sperm activation in three closely related sympatric Strongylocentrotus species. Sperm undergo acrosomal exocytosis upon contact with sulfated polysaccharides in the egg-jelly coat. This acrosome reaction exposes the protein bindin and is therefore a precondition for sperm binding to the egg. We found that sulfated carbohydrates from egg jelly induce the acrosome reaction species specifically in

Marine antifouling biocide 4,5-dichloro-2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one disrupts sediment microbiome structure and function: insights from absolute quantification and enzyme activity dynamics.

The organic booster biocide DCOIT (4,5-dichloro-2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one) is widely used in marine antifouling systems, yet its ecological impacts on sediment microbiomes remain poorly understood. Here, we integrated absolute quantitative 16S rRNA gene sequencing, metagenomics, and enzyme activity assays to examine microbial responses to DCOIT exposure (0-50 μg/g sediment) over 30 days. DCOIT induced oxidative stress and bioenergetic impairment, accompanied by reduced microbial activity and inhibition of key enzyme-mediated processes involved in organic matter turnover and nitrogen trans

Nutritional determinants of the ecology of the oral flora.

Consideration of nutritional factors as determinants of oral microbial ecology leads to the conclusion that endogenous factors play a dominant role. It is the interactions between specific microorganisms and nutritional and other factors provided by the host that selectively determine the kinds of microorganisms which willinitially reside in the oral cavity and the sites which they will colonize. The persistence of these original "colonists" in their respective ecologic niches will depend in part on the accessibility of endogenous nutrients variously provided by saliva, tissue exudates, crevic

Temporal and spatial variation in temperature and oxygen at the microscale: key niche axes for aquatic life.

To understand animal adaptations, we need accurate estimates of the ecological factors impacting organisms in nature. While temperature is a well-established driver of physiological performance, its effects in aquatic systems are closely linked to water oxygenation. Oxygen levels are expected to differ spatially and fluctuate temporally much more strongly in water than on land, but our understanding of variation in temperature and oxygen levels in freshwaters remains limited. It is essential that environmental variation is recorded at spatial and temporal resolutions relevant to the organism.

Evaluating corticokinematic coherence using electroencephalography and human pose estimation.

Objective. While peripheral mechanisms of proprioception are well understood, the cortical processing of its feedback during dynamic and complex movements remains less clear. Corticokinematic coherence (CKC), which quantifies the coupling between limb movements and sensorimotor cortex activity, offers a way to investigate this cortical processing. However, ecologically valid CKC assessment poses technical challenges. Thus, by integrating Electroencephalography (EEG) with Human Pose Estimation (HPE), this study validates the feasibility and validity of a novel methodology for measuring CKC durin

The ectoparasitic seal louse, Echinophthirius horridus, relies on a sealed tracheal system and spiracle closing apparatus for underwater respiration.

Marine mammals host a diverse array of parasites engaged in a continuous evolutionary arms race. However, our understanding of the biology of parasitic insects associated with marine mammals, particularly their adaptations to challenging marine environments, remains limited. The seal louse, Echinophthirius horridus, which infests true seals, is one of thirteen insect species capable of enduring prolonged dives in open seas. This ectoparasite has evolved several adaptations to withstand extreme conditions, such as low oxygen levels (hypoxia), temperature fluctuations, hydrostatic pressure, and

Endocranial anatomy of the charadriiformes: sensory system variation and the evolution of wing-propelled diving.

Just as skeletal characteristics provide clues regarding behavior of extinct vertebrates, phylogenetically-informed evaluation of endocranial morphology facilitates comparisons among extinct taxa and extant taxa with known behavioral characteristics. Previous research has established that endocranial morphology varies across Aves; however, variation of those systems among closely related species remains largely unexplored. The Charadriiformes (shorebirds and allies) are an ecologically diverse clade with a comparatively rich fossil record, and therefore, are well suited for investigating inter

Factors influencing the head and neck microbiome.

The head and neck microbiome comprises a diverse and complex community of microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses. It contributes to oral homeostasis by maintaining a harmonious balance within the oral environment. Disruptions in the balance of the oral microbiota, known as dysbiosis, can lead to the development of various oral health conditions and may extend their effect beyond the oral cavity and influence the initiation or worsening of systemic diseases. Changes in the head and neck microbiome are attributed to interactions between the host, the environment, and the

Oxidative stress response: a critical factor affecting the ecological competitiveness of Streptococcus mutans.

Oral microecological balance is closely associated with the development of dental caries. Oxidative stress is one of the important factors regulating the composition and structure of the oral microbial community. Streptococcus mutans is linked to the occurrence and development of dental caries. The ability of S. mutans to withstand oxidative stress affects its survival competitiveness in biofilms. The oxidative stress regulatory mechanisms of S. mutans include synthesis of reductase, regulation of metal ions uptake, regulator PerR, transcription regulator Spx, extracellular uptake of glutathio
