The reservoir for hospital-acquired Legionnaires disease has been shown to be the potable water distribution system. We investigated the influence of the natural microbial population and sediment (scale and organic particulates) found in water systems as growth-promoting factors for Legionella pneumophila. Our in vitro experiments showed that: (i) water from hot-water storage tank readily supported the survival of L. pneumophila, (ii) the concentration of sediment was directly related to the survival of L. pneumophila, (iii) the presence of environmental bacteria improved the survival of L. pn

In the light of the known data about epidemiological cycles of human and simian loiasis in Africa, and the eventual relationships between these infections, a hypothetical schema is presented, giving a whole view of the dynamic ecology of the Loa systems. This schema involves a primitive simian savannah cycle, from which, the filaria passing from monkey to man, a human savannah cycle, and then the classical human forest cycle are developed. The primitive savannah cycle could also be at the origin of simian forest cycles, but the exchanges between monkeys and man seem very unlikely inside the fo…

The overall comparisons of habitats are given in (Table III). The habitats are arranged in order of extent of alterations by man, with the least disturbed at the top. The highest average blood isolation rates came from the least disturbed areas. The highest monthly maximal rickettsial isolation rates from blood and maximal prevalence rates of antibody per month were also obtained at Bukit Lanjan, the habitat least altered by activities of man. The lowest average blood isolation rate (6%) and the lowest monthly maximal rickettsial isolation and antibody prevalence rates were obtained at Bukit M

To gain additional information on the extent of leptospirosis in wildlife following a human outbreak in Iowa, wild mammals and lower forms of life were collected. Isolation, darkfield microscopic, serologic and pathologic procedures were used to identify past or present evidence of leptospiral infection. Leptospires were isolated from 7 of 75 (9%) mammals. Serotype grippotyphosa was isolated from three raccoons (procyon lotor) and one Western Harvest Mouse (Reithrodontomys megalotis). Serotype ballum was isolated from three opossums (Didelphis marsupialis). Leptospires, unidentified to date, w

The author reviews the natural history of the tick vectors of American spotted fever. The discussion concerns the ecology of the Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni, the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, and the lone-star tick, Amblyomma americanum, all of which are proven vectors of Rocky Mountain spotted fever to man. Also included are the rabbit tick, Haemaphysalis leporispalustris and Dermacentor parumapertus, which very rarely bite man but which are considered of importance in maintaining and distributing Rickettsia rickettsi, the etiological agent of Rocky Mountain s…

Ecological guilds are groups of organisms that utilize the same class of resources and occupy similar niches, regardless of their taxonomic identities. Here we propose the Guild Model for Cystic Fibrosis Airway Microbial Ecology, which considers the ecological function and wider role of each microbe in the ecosystem. This model consists of four functional guilds: (i) "Brewers" metabolize host-derived substrates (e.g., mucins) and produce fermentation products; (ii) "Drunkards" exploit the metabolic niche built by Brewers, consuming fermentation products and secreting exopolysaccharides to buil…

SUMMARYReptiles are a diverse and speciose class of animals that are broadly threatened by habitat loss, climate change, and other factors. From a microbiological perspective, reptiles have historically been examined as a source of disease, particularly salmonellosis, with most studies being culture-based investigations into causative agents of disease and potential for zoonoses. More recent work has sought to characterize the oral, skin, and gut microbiomes of reptiles more broadly to understand their contribution to reptile health and digestion. Non-avian reptiles are particularly interestin

Microbial siderophores are high-affinity iron-binding compounds which are produced by bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes to obtain iron and survive and interact with different species in an iron-deficient environment. While the conventional research on siderophore systems deals mainly with the study within the same taxa, modern researchers have increased their inclination toward cross-kingdom integration of siderophore behavior and their impact on host-associated environments. This can be largely attributed to differences in biosynthetic gene clusters, receptor systems, and regulatory networks

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the spatiotemporal ecology of probable malaria mortality in 19th-century southern Ontario to evaluate how settlement expansion, landscape transformation, and infrastructure development structured transmission risk in a temperate, settler-colonial context.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Probable malaria-attributed deaths recorded in Ontario death certificates (1869-1900; n = 2683) were geocoded and analyzed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Mortality locations were examined in relation to historical settlements, railways, and wetlands derived from 19th-century…

Pseudomonas aeruginosa has long served as a model organism in microbiology, particularly for studies on gene expression, quorum sensing, antibiotic resistance, virulence and biofilm formation. Its genetic tractability has advanced the understanding of complex regulatory networks and experimental evolution. The versatility of this bacterium stems from its genomic variability, metabolic flexibility and phenotypic diversity, enabling it to thrive in diverse environments, both as a harmless saprophyte and an opportunistic human pathogen. P. aeruginosa can cause acute and chronic human infections,

Fermented foods and beverages, produced by the intentional growth of microorganisms, have long been among the most widely consumed foods in the human diet. Whether microorganisms are added directly to food substrates, or the growth and activity of autochthonous microorganisms colonizing food substrates is encouraged by selective conditions, the production of organic acids, ethanol and other metabolic end products enhance the safety, shelf-life, sensory and functional properties of foods. Whereas some fermented foods may be produced by communities dominated by only a few taxa of limited phyloge

The objective of this review is to assess the population status, ecology, and conservation efforts for threatened, that includes critically endangered, endangered and vulnerable vulture species in India. Vultures are integral to ecosystem health, functioning as natural scavengers by consuming carcasses and preventing the spread of infectious diseases to humans and other animals. India is home to nine vulture species, of which four are critically endangered, one is endangered, three are near-threatened, and one is of least concern according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.…

Oncomelania hupensis is the only intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum, and control of O. hupensis is of great significance in schistosomiasis control. As an amphibious mollusk, O. hupensis is frequently distributed in the fluctuating zones of rivers and lakes, and its distribution is along the water system and watershed. Nevertheless, there is little knowledge on the impact of watershed factors on the landscape and dynamic changes of O. hupensis distribution. As a novel discipline, watershed ecology will help reveal the internal relationship of snail distribution, identify the vulnerable…

The genus Echinococcus is composed of eight generally recognized species and one genotypic cluster (Echinococcus canadensis cluster) that may in future be resolved into one to three species. For each species, we review existing information on transmission routes and life cycles in different geographical contexts and - where available - include basic biological information of parasites and hosts (e.g., susceptibility of host species). While some Echinococcus spp. are transmitted in life cycles that involve predominantly domestic animals (e.g., dog - livestock cycles), others are wildlife parasi
