Challenges encountered by parents from urban, lower social economic class in changing lifestyle behaviors of their children who are overweight or obese.

BACKGROUND: Parents from urban, lower social economic classes often encounter unique challenges in their lives, which shape how they work with their children who are overweight or obese to change their exercise and eating behaviors at home. The present study took an initial step to address a gap in the literature by describing the challenges that parents from lower social economic classes in an urban city encountered in changing exercise and eating behaviors of their children who are overweight or obese. METHODS: A conversational style semi-structured interview with prompts and probes was con

Physical health and emotional and behavioral problems in maltreated children according to family economic status: Health problems of maltreated children in Korea.

Low family income is a risk factor for child maltreatment. However, there has been no comparative study on the association between child maltreatment and family income. The objective of this study was to investigate the physical health and emotional and behavioral problems of maltreated children according to the economic status of their family.Cross-sectional nationwide studyData from 2012 to 2014 was extracted from the Korean National Child Abuse Registry (age <18 years) operated by the National Child Protection Agency (NCPA). Demographic characteristics and 34 physical health and emotional/b

The relationship between residential proximity to outdoor play spaces and children's mental and behavioral health: The importance of neighborhood socio-economic characteristics.

Urban outdoor play spaces are reported to improve children's health. However, there is little empirical evidence on the impact of outdoor play spaces on childhood mental and behavioral health. To fill this gap, we investigated the associations between residential proximity to outdoor play spaces and the prevalence of diagnosed mental and behavioral disorders. We explored whether these associations differ by individual and area-level socio-economic status (SES). This cross-sectional study included 151 110 children who were 0-12 years old in 2014 and were visited in public primary health care ce

Women, economic hardship and the path of survival: HIV/AIDS risk behavior among women receiving HIV/AIDS treatment in Uganda.

The results are presented from a 2005 survey of 377 women in four HIV/AIDS treatment programs in Uganda. The aim of the study was to explore women's economic hardships and the association with four sexual risk behaviors: whether a woman was sexually active in the last 12 months, whether a condom was used during the last sex act, whether she reported having had a sexual partner in the last six months who she suspected had multiple partners and report of forced, coercive or survival sex in the last six months. Few women were sexually active (34%), likely due to the high proportion of widows (49%

Evaluation of behavioral economic strategies to raise influenza vaccination rates across a health system: Results from a randomized clinical trial.

Influenza vaccination rates are low. Working with a large US health system, we evaluated three health system-wide interventions using the electronic health record's patient portal to improve influenza vaccination rates. We performed a two-arm RCT with a nested factorial design within the treatment arm, randomizing patients to usual-care control (no portal interventions) or to one or more portal interventions. We included all patients within this health system during the 2020-2021 influenza vaccination season, which overlapped with the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the patient portal, we simultane

Effect of Dietary Microalgae (Spirulina platensis) on Growth Performance, Ingestive Behavior, Hemato-Biochemical Parameters, and Economic Efficiency of Fayoumi Broilers.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation with Spirulina platensis (SP) on the productive performance, carcass characteristics, behavior, blood serum metabolites, hematological indices, and economic efficiency of Fayoumi broiler chickens for a 56-day. In total, 120 one-day-old broiler chicks were randomly distributed among four dietary treatments with three replicates (n = 10/group) for 8 weeks. The dietary treatments were a control basal diet without SP and the same basal diets supplemented with 0.25, 0.5, or 1.0% SP. Birds fed 1% Spirulina-supplemented diets

Economic Challenges and Behavioral and Mental Health Risks for Overdose during the COVID-19 Pandemic among People Who Inject Drugs.

People who inject drugs (PWID) are a population that disproportionately struggles with economic and mental health challenges. However, despite numerous reports of people globally experiencing new or exacerbated economic and/or mental health challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, the literature on the effect of the pandemic on PWID and their risk for harm (e.g., overdose) remains sparse. The present study will describe reported changes during the pandemic in risk factors for drug overdose (including changes in mental health symptoms and care access) among PWID in Chicago, and it will examine

Health, social, and economic consequences of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder: a controlled national study evaluating societal effects.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Parkinson's disease (PD) causes significant socioeconomic burdens. One of the strongest predictors of PD is rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD; when there is no known other cause of RBD, referred to as idiopathic RBD [iRBD]), but there is no information about its factual welfare burden. We estimated the direct and indirect total costs of iRBD in a national sample of patients, based on a national register-based cohort study with matched controls. METHODS: Using records from the Danish National Patient Registry, patient's diagnosis with RBD from 2006 to 2016

The Habit Formation trial of behavioral economic interventions to improve statin use and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease: Rationale, design and methodologies.

BACKGROUND: Low adherence to statin (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors) medication is common. Here, we report on the design and implementation of the Habit Formation trial. This clinical trial assessed whether the interventions, based on principles from behavioral economics, might improve statin adherence and lipid control in at-risk populations. We describe the rationale and methods for the trial, recruitment, conduct and follow-up. We also report on several barriers we encountered with recruitment and conduct of the trial, solutions we devised and efforts we will make to assess their impact on ou

Behavioral economic analysis of opioid consumption in heroin-dependent individuals: effects of alternative reinforcer magnitude and post-session drug supply.

This study investigated the extent to which hydromorphone (HYD) choice and behavioral economic demand were influenced by HYD unit price (UP), alternative money reinforcement magnitude and post-session HYD supply. Heroin-dependent research volunteers (n=13) stabilized on buprenorphine 8 mg/day first sampled two HYD doses (12 and 24 mg IM, labeled Drug A [session 1] and Drug B [session 2]). In each of the final six sessions, volunteers were given access to a 12-trial choice progressive ratio (PR) task and could earn a HYD unit dose (2 mg, fixed) or money ($2 or $4, varied across sessions), admin

Development of a brief adjusting alcohol purchase task as a measure of behavioral economic demand for alcohol in two samples of heavy-drinking young adults.

Alcohol demand, reflecting the relative reinforcing value of alcohol, is robustly associated with alcohol use and problems. Alcohol demand is typically assessed using alcohol purchase tasks (APTs) in which participants estimate alcohol consumption at escalating prices, with the resulting demand curves yielding multiple indices of value. Although generally efficient, full-length APTs pose some burden and existing short forms cannot produce individual demand curves or derived indices. Thus, we developed a brief adjusting APT using an algorithm to identify 5-6 items from a full-length APT based o

Prevalence of behavioral risk factors of cardiovascular diseases and associated socio-economic factors among pregnant women in a rural area in Southern Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have dramatically infiltrated populations living in abject poverty in Low- and Middle-income Countries (LMICs), and poor maternal and child health outcomes have been frequently reported for those with CVD risk factors. However, few studies have explored the behavioral risk factors of CVDs among pregnant women in rural settings. This study aimed at determining the prevalence and identifying the socio-economic predictors of behavioral risk factors of CVDs among pregnant women in rural area in Southern Nepal. METHODS: A Community-based cross-sectional s

Cluster Randomized Pragmatic Clinical Trial Testing Behavioral Economic Implementation Strategies to Improve Tobacco Treatment for Patients With Cancer Who Smoke.

PURPOSE: Few cancer centers systematically engage patients with evidence-based tobacco treatment despite its positive effect on quality of life and survival. Implementation strategies directed at patients, clinicians, or both may increase tobacco use treatment (TUT) within oncology. METHODS: We conducted a four-arm cluster-randomized pragmatic trial across 11 clinical sites comparing the effect of strategies informed by behavioral economics on TUT engagement during oncology encounters with cancer patients. We delivered electronic health record (EHR)-based nudges promoting TUT across four nudg

Economic evaluation of a behavioral intervention versus brief advice for substance use treatment in pregnant women: results from a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Substance use in pregnancy is associated with severe maternal and fetal morbidities and substantial economic costs. However, few studies have evaluated the cost-effectiveness of substance use treatment programs in pregnant women. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the economic impact of a behavioral intervention that integrated motivational enhancement therapy with cognitive behavioral therapy (MET-CBT) for treatment of substance use in pregnancy, in comparison with brief advice. METHODS: We conducted an economic evaluation alongside a clinical trial by collecting data on r

Behavioral economic cannabis demand following recreational cannabis legalization: Six-year findings from an observational cohort study of community adults in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis demand, a behavioural economic measure of cannabis relative reinforcing value (i.e., incentive salience), is robustly associated with cannabis involvement. Recreational cannabis legalization in Canada has shifted the availability and social acceptability of cannabis, potentially altering its reinforcing value. Though prior studies have examined legalization-related changes in cannabis use and misuse, none have examined changes in cannabis demand. Thus, we investigated intraindividual changes in cannabis demand over the six years following legalization, overall and moderate

Feedbacks Using behaviOral econOmic theories on STEP countS in Cardiovascular Disease Patients (FOOTSTEPS) Using Novel Daily Step Counts Retrieving System.

The effectiveness of gamification-based feedback systems that utilize non-monetary points to promote exercise among cardiovascular disease (CVD) patients has not been fully evaluated. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a gamification program using non-monetary points on the daily step counts in CVD patients. We collected 30 patients with a history of heart failure or myocardial infarction at a single tertiary center between January 9, 2023, and April 13, 2023. The primary outcome was the change in daily step counts. The baseline step counts were compared with those during the 4-

Assessing behavioral economic biases among young adults who have increased likelihood of acquiring HIV: a mixed methods study in Baltimore, Maryland.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral economic (BE) biases have been studied in the context of numerous health conditions, yet are understudied in the field of HIV prevention. This aim of this study was to quantify the prevalence of four common BE biases-present bias, information salience, overoptimism, and loss aversion-relating to condom use and HIV testing in economically-vulnerable young adults who had increased likelihood of acquiring HIV. We also qualitatively examined participants' perceptions of these biases. METHODS: 43 participants were enrolled in the study. Data were collected via interviews usi
