Development of prone positioning and skin damage prevention digital education: the PRONEtect project.

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of skin/tissue damage, such as pressure ulcers, remains high in mechanically ventilated patients in the prone position. According to guidelines, critically ill patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) should be prone for at least 12-16 hours to improve oxygenation and decrease mortality. Therefore, educating clinicians on how to reposition and manage the patient safely in a prone position plays a vital role in preventing adverse events. This project aimed to develop accessible online educational content to assist clinicians in safely executing the prone

Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease of the Foot and Ankle: Imaging Features and Pathophysiology.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is the most common inherited peripheral polyneuropathy, resulting in length-dependent motor and sensory deficiencies. Asymmetric nerve involvement in the lower extremities creates a muscle imbalance, which manifests as a characteristic cavovarus deformity of the foot and ankle. This deformity is widely considered to be the most debilitating symptom of the disease, causing the patient to feel unstable and limiting mobility. Foot and ankle imaging in patients with CMT is critical for evaluation and treatment, as there is a wide range of phenotypic variation. Bot

Satisfaction With a Virtual Learning Collaborative Aimed at Implementing Treat-to-Target in Rheumatoid Arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Limited information is available concerning experiences of participants in a virtual learning collaborative (LC), and little qualitative data or participant feedback on how this format can be improved. One prior in-person LC in rheumatology successfully improved adherence with treat-to-target (TTT) for RA. We conducted a virtual LC on TTT and herein report on participant satisfaction. METHODS: We conducted a virtual LC with 18 rheumatology practices from across the United States during 2020 to 2021. The LC included a virtual kickoff meeting and monthly videoconferences, accompanied

Development and Usability Evaluation of an E-Learning Tool for Blended Learning in Pediatric Endocrinology: Formative Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Residents in pediatric endocrinology subspecialty units encounter diverse educational scenarios spanning theory, skills, and attitudes; yet, brief residencies frequently limit their exposure to certain clinical cases. Research in medical education demonstrates that e-learning can address such challenges efficiently. We implemented a blended learning model grounded in the Kolb learning cycle that uses structured, case-based e-learning. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the utility and usability of blended learning using a novel e-learning tool. METHODS: We used a problem-solving app

Changes and continuities in undergraduate nursing education during and after COVID-19: a European comparative study from the perspective of health science.

BACKGROUND: The education of healthcare professionals, including nurses, represents a critical intersection with health systems science (HSS), which is often considered the third pillar of healthcare education alongside basic and clinical sciences. Despite the amount of research on nursing education during the COVID-19 pandemic, there remains a gap in analysis from an HSS perspective. METHODS: A Comparative Education Approach involving undergraduate nursing programs (UNPs) across Europe, with longitudinal data collection from 2002 to 2023. The aim of the study was threefold: (a) to summarize

Effectiveness of online training in improving primary care doctors' competency in brief tobacco interventions: A cluster-randomized controlled trial of WHO modules in Delta State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) strongly recommends that brief tobacco interventions should be routinely offered in primary care. However, medical doctors do not consistently and effectively intervene during their encounters with cigarette smokers. There is a paucity of studies assessing the effect of training on the tobacco intervention competency of primary care doctors in Nigeria. AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of online training in improving competency in brief tobacco interventions among primary care doctors in Delta State, Nigeria. METHODS: A cluster-randomized cont

Strategies for Managing Pharmacy Experiential Education During COVID-19.

In recent months, the coronavirus pandemic has significantly affected almost every industry in the United States, including health care and higher education. Faculty and students at colleges and schools of pharmacy nationwide have needed to quickly adapt as the delivery of curricula has shifted to primarily online format. Additionally, experiential rotations have been significantly affected as practice settings such as hospitals and outpatient clinics have limited students' interactions with patients or stopped allowing students on-site altogether. Our commentary will explore strategies that h

The digital use of simulated patients in times of the corona pandemic - considerations and proposals.

The corona pandemic has posed major challenges for teaching with simulated persons (SPs), which usually requires the physical presence of the participants. Within a short period of time, a large number of individual solutions were developed. The committee "Simulated Persons" of the Society for Medical Education has developed considerations and proposals in five areas to meet the qualitative challenges of the method. First and foremost, the safety of the SPs is at stake, both in terms of infection prevention and role-related stress to which the SPs are now exposed at home alone instead of the u

Improving surgical training by identifying the most common feedback trainees receive for index cases.

BACKGROUND: To make surgical training more effective, a proven method is needed to provide feedback to residents on their surgeries. Residency programs may make up for limited training time in the operating room by improving feedback that trainees receive about cases. OBJECTIVE: The goals of this study were (1) to determine if an online tool to communicate feedback for attendings and trainees shows face validity and (2) to use an online tool to identify the most common feedback trainees receive after performing orchiopexy and hypospadias repair by survey. METHODS: In 2016, determining whethe

A MOOC-based and high-fidelity surgical simulation-integrated clinical internship mode in optometry teaching for ophthalmology graduate students.

BACKGROUND: Clinical medicine postgraduates are expected to attain competencies equivalent to senior resident physicians. However, ophthalmology graduate students often struggle to integrate optometry theory with clinical practice during rotations. To address this gap, we developed and evaluated a blended clinical internship model combining Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) and digital twin-supported high-fidelity surgical simulation (HFS) technology. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 54 ophthalmology graduate students and 16 trained teachers. Students were randomly a

Equity Access: Online Nursing Education on Care for People With Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Few schools of nursing have explicit content that focuses on disability as a multidimensional construct. Time and expertise are two barriers to increasing that material. METHOD: To address this gap, a set of online modules were developed to provide an introduction to the specialized knowledge related to the care of individuals with disabilities, with a focus on advocacy. The modules include multiple teaching strategies and can be assigned as supplemental to existing coursework. The modules were tested with 256 undergraduate senior-level nursing students. RESULTS: Overall, student
