Electrothermally Addressable Liquid Crystal Elastomer Microactuator Arrays with Integrated Microheaters.

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are attractive for microscale actuation because they exhibit large, reversible, and programmable deformation. However, practical LCE microsystems remain difficult to realize due to challenges in fabricating discrete actuator arrays and achieving localized, electrically addressable actuation. Existing localized driving strategies often rely on optical stimulation, which is less practical for scalable integrated systems. In this work, we present an electrothermal LCE microactuation system enabled by lithographically integrated tungsten (W) microheaters. Surface-a…

Impact of Elastomer Composition on Rubber-Toughened Organic Solar Cell Performance.

Adding a thermoplastic elastomer to an organic solar cell (OSC) active layer has been shown to improve its mechanical resilience while largely maintaining the optoelectronic performance. However, a guide to select from the many available elastomers is needed for systematic optimization. Here, we delineate how the structure and composition of the elastomer impact the active layer morphology, fracture toughness, and OSC performance when applied in a high-efficiency polymer/small-molecule acceptor active layer. We compare styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS) and styrene-ethylene-propylene-sty…

A super soft thermoplastic biodegradable elastomer with high elasticity for arterial regeneration.

Elastomers with innovative performance will provide new opportunities for solving problems in soft tissue repair, such as arterial regeneration. Herein, we present a thermoplastic biodegradable elastomer (PPS) that differs from the rigid, low-elastic traditional ones. It shows super softness (0.41 ± 0.052 MPa), high stretchability (3239 ± 357 %), and viscoelasticity similar to natural soft tissues. In addition, it also has good processability and appropriate degradability, estimated at 4-8 months for complete degradation in vivo. This excellent overall performance makes it a great support mate…

An elastomer with in situ generated pure zwitterionic surfaces for fibrosis-resistant implants.

Polymeric elastomers are widely utilized in implantable biomedical devices. Nevertheless, the implantation of these elastomers can provoke a robust foreign body response (FBR), leading to the rejection of foreign implants and consequently reducing their effectiveness in vivo. Building effective anti-FBR coatings on those implants remains challenging. Herein, we introduce a coating-free elastomer with superior immunocompatibility. A super-hydrophilic anti-fouling zwitterionic layer can be generated in situ on the surface of the elastomer through a simple chemical trigger. This elastomer can rep…

A Self-Healing Conductive Elastomer Based on a Polymerizable Deep Eutectic Solvent.

Conductive elastomers are extensively used in electronics; however, they are prone to mechanical damage, have shortened service life, and cause environmental pollution and resource waste under the influence of external factors. Therefore, conductive elastomers with rapid self-healing properties are crucial for solving these problems. To that end, a conductive elastomer based on a polymerizable deep eutectic solvent as the matrix is developed in this study. The contents of certain small molecules and conductive particles are adjusted to yield a conductive elastomer with excellent comprehensive …

Endoscopic rehabilitation of vocal cord paralysis with a silicone elastomer suspension implant.

OBJECTIVES: Because of the side effects of Teflon, the risk of infection from the use of collagen, autologous fat resorption, and the lack of alternative substances, injection laryngoplasty tends to be replaced by laryngeal framework surgery as the method of choice for the treatment of unilateral vocal cord recurrent paralysis (LP). The aim of this study was to evaluate the results, for morbidity and voice quality, of treating this paralysis by injection of a silicone suspension elastomer implant (SSEI). STUDY DESIGN: The study was retrospective, and 19 patients were included. Average follow-

Replacement of the first metatarsophalangeal joint with a silicone elastomer ball-shaped spacer.

We report the use of a silicone elastomer ball-shaped spacer for the treatment of hallux valgus and hallux rigidus. One hundred and eleven operations were performed in 77 patients over a 5-year period. The best results were obtained in patients with hallux rigidus. Good results were obtained in hallux valgus, but it was found that in patients with severe preoperative deformity the correction obtained was inadequate, and an additional procedure would be required for full correction. There were no cases of silicone synovitis.

Silicone lymphadenopathy and synovitis. Complications of silicone elastomer finger joint prostheses.

We report two complications of silicone elastomer finger joint prostheses. In one patient, the prostheses broke, with silicone particles present in synovium ("detritic synovitis"). In another patient, silicone particles were found in an axillary lymph node five years after insertion of prostheses in the ipsilateral hand (prostheses were intact at the time). Microscopically, silicone particles in synovium and lymph node were identical to particles abraded from a new prosthesis.

Programming photoactuation by modulating the degree of charge-separation in DASA-based liquid crystal elastomers.

Photoresponsive soft actuators enable light-driven shape changes with spatial and temporal control, typically achieved by integrating molecular photoswitches into liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). Commonly, the structure-property relationship of photoswitches is well explored in dilute solution phase. However, connecting solution-phase molecular electronic structure to function in crosslinked LCEs remains challenging. Here, we use donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs) as a tunable photoswitch family to engineer an electronically diverse DASA-LCE platform with varied charge separation. A ser…

MOF-Induced Pore Confinement: A Strategy for Thermomechanically Robust and High-Strength Liquid Crystal Elastomers.

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are premier candidates for soft robotics due to their large, reversible actuation. However, their utility is often restricted by a fundamental trade-off: as temperature increases, orientational order diminishes, causing a sharp loss in load-bearing capacity and actuation stress above the isotropic transition. Here, we report a sequential integration strategy that overcomes this thermal limitation by embedding ultrathin Cu-TCPP metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets within the LCE network. This approach establishes a pore-confinement-enabled architecture that …

Highly Stretchable, Transparent, Self-Healing Ion-Conducting Elastomers for Long-Term Reliable Human Motion Detection.

The flexible electronic sensor is a critical component of wearable devices, generally requiring high stretchability, excellent transmittance, conductivity, self-healing capability, and strong adhesion. However, designing ion-conducting elastomers meeting all these requirements simultaneously remains a challenge. In this study, a novel approach is presented to fabricate highly stretchable, transparent, and self-healing ion-conducting elastomers, which are synthesized via photo-polymerization of two polymerizable deep eutectic solvents (PDESs) monomers, i.e., methacrylic acid (MAA)/choline chlor…

Dynamic Covalent Lewis Pair Grafting Enables Spontaneous Linear-to-Bottlebrush Polymer Assembly and Adaptive Elastomers.

Bottlebrush and comb-graft polymers, macromolecules with densely grafted side chains along a central backbone, exhibit distinctive conformational, rheological, and self-assembly behaviors. Although these architectures are widely used to tune mechanical responses, most reported systems rely on stable covalent carbon frameworks, or fragile supramolecular assemblies, while dynamic covalent chemistries remain largely unexplored. Herein, we harness Lewis acid-base pairs whose directional coordinate bonds drive the spontaneous assembly of graft architectures by simply mixing Lewis acid-terminated po

Activation-Free Liquid-Metal Composite Elastomers via Ultrasonic-Enabled Interface Welding for Strain-Insensitive Electronics.

Liquid metal (LM)-based stretchable electronics are often limited by their native insulating oxide shell, typically necessitating destructive post-activation or resulting in blends with limited extreme-strain capabilities. Herein, we report an activation-free LM composite elastomer (ALCE) featuring a robust metallurgical interface between LM nanoparticles and silver nanowires (Ag NWs). Unlike conventional physical mixing, we harness acoustic cavitation to facilitate in situ alloying. As the solvent subsequently evaporates, the welded components preferentially sediment to yield a macroscopic gr

Heterogeneous Integration: Design Principles for Advanced Liquid Crystal Elastomers With Spatially Programmable Properties and Functionalities.

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) uniquely merge liquid crystal anisotropy with rubbery elasticity, positioning them as cornerstone materials for soft actuators. As the field is progressing from laboratory demonstrations toward practical applications in soft robotics and biomedical devices, it is moving beyond the simple, uniform deformations toward advanced spatially programmable properties and integrated functionalities. The design principles underlying these advances lie in heterogeneous integration, defined as the intentional spatial design of chemical, structural, or orientational differen…

Flame-Retardant Ionic Conductive Elastomers with Multiple Hydrogen Bonds: Synthesis, Characterization, and Strain Sensing Applications.

Flammability is a significant challenge in polymer-based strain sensing applications. In addition, the existing intrinsic flame retardant is not elastic at room temperature, which may potentially damage the flexible equipment. This study presents a series of flame-retardant ionic conductive elastomers (ICEs) (denoted as PCAIPx) containing phosphorus from phytic acid (PA) and nitrogen from choline chloride (ChCl) with multiple hydrogen bonds synthesized using a simple and efficient one-pot UV-initiated radical copolymerization of a polymerizable deep eutectic solvent (PDES). The limiting oxygen…
