Reconstructive Management of Devastating Electrical Injuries to the Face.

BACKGROUND: Devastating fourth-degree electrical injuries to the face and head pose significant reconstructive challenges. To date, there have been few peer-reviewed articles in the literature that describe those reconstructive challenges. The authors present the largest case series to date that describes the management of these injuries, including the incorporation of face transplantation. METHODS: A retrospective case series was conducted of patients with devastating electrical injuries to the face who were managed at two level-1 trauma centers between 2007 and 2011. Data describing patient

Sympathetic skin response in electrical burn injury.

BACKGROUND: Electrical burn has been reported to be highly associated with peripheral neuropathy. This study was designed to evaluate the sympathetic skin response (SSR) of electrical burn patients to determine whether the sympathetic nervous system is involved in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sympathetic skin response of 28 patients, suffering from electrical burn injury (divided into two groups of high voltage and low voltage exposure) was compared with that of 28 matched subjects, who had never experienced electrical burn. Bilateral palmar and plantar latency and amplitude of

[Surgical treatment of high-voltage electrical injuries].

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: High-voltage burns represent a challenging surgical entity. Compared to conventional burns, these injuries are characterized by an increased morbidity and worse potential for rehabilitation. The aim of the present study was to analyse the management of high-voltage injuries during the early posttraumatic period with special emphasis on the surgical procedures. PATIENTS/MATERIAL AND METHOD: We retrospectively evaluated the medical records of patients with electrical injuries treated from 1995 - 2007. A total of 61 patients (57 men, 4 females, mean age: 34 +/- 13 years) with

An experimental model of an electrical injury to the peripheral nerve.

OBJECTIVE: Injury to the peripheral nerves is a common complication found in patients suffering from electrical burns. At present, there are many kinds of experimental models for electrical injury, but no report describes an animal-based experimental model for a relatively simple electrical injury to the peripheral nerves. We have designed and constructed a specific device to generate increasingly severe electrical shocks of a known voltage for the experiment. This device can simulate injuries of different degrees (minor, medium and severe) caused by shock to the right sciatic nerve of rats.

Management of high voltage electrical injury in children.

High voltage electrical injuries in children are rare. They produce severe internal damage to limbs resulting in a high incidence of amputation. Early, aggressive serial debridement ensures adequate removal of dead tissue. Flap coverage to defects is necessary. Secondary surgery is common, and delayed sequelae such as tendon rupture should be expected.

[Acute and chronic injuries after electrical accidents].

BACKGROUND: Electrical accidents are potentially fatal incidents with effect on the cardiovascular, nerve and musculoskeletal systems and on the skin (burns). The electrical engineering industry points out that the follow-up of injured persons from site of accident to hospital is quite random. This paper gives a review of the current literature and proposes guidelines for the follow-up of victims of electrical accidents. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A search of the literature was conducted on Medline, Embase, Biosis, Healthline, the Cochrane Library, the ISI citation databases, and on several other s

Motor neuron disease after electric injury.

The occurrence of motor neuron disease after electrical injury in six patients is reported and compared with patients from the literature. The patients were five men with spinal onset and one woman with bulbar motor neuron disease after electric shock. Two patients were struck by lightning and four by industrial electric shock. For all six of them, the disease started at the site of the electrical trauma. The mean delay for onset of motor neuron disease was 44 months. In four of the spinal patients the disease progressed slowly with mild handicap after several years. For the fifth patient, imp

Pathogenesis and recovery of tetraplegia after electrical injury.

The site of neurological damage causing paralysis after electrical trauma remains to be clarified. A patient is described who developed a flaccid tetraplegia after a high voltage electrical injury. The findings on initial examination and neurophysiological investigation showed a very severe generalised sensory-motor polyneuropathy. His subsequent follow up over 60 months showed a remarkable degree of reinnervation and the unmasking of a myelopathy. The degree of reinnervation noted suggests an axonopathy that left the other elements of the peripheral nerves relatively spared. These findings pr

A clinical analysis of 836 cases with electric injury.

Eight hundred thirty-six patients with electric injury were admitted to Shanghai Power Hospital from 1972 to 1998. The majority of electric injury patients were young or middle-aged industrial workers from both cities and rural areas. These patients were classified into three categories depending on the type of electric injury: (1) electric shock; (2) electric contact burn injury; (3) electric arc burn. In our study of wound management, we focused on three areas: first, the choice of operation time in electric burn injury; second, the methods of wound management on the injured extremities, esp

Electric acupuncture treatment of peripheral nerve injury.

54 cases of peripheral nerve injury were treated by electric acupuncture and compared with 54 control cases treated with supportive medication. The changes after treatment were observed chiefly by electromyography while sensory and motor improvement were also recorded as auxiliary indicators. The therapeutic results in the acupuncture group were 5 cases cured, 26 markedly effective, 19 improved, and 4 cases failed, a total effective rate of 92.6% in contrast to the 55.6% for the controls. Analysis of the therapeutic results showed that 1) those in the acupuncture group were significantly bette
