The frequency, structure, mode of formation and significance of sealed osteons remain unsettled. Sealed osteons have been reported as an unusual finding in the cortical bone of experimental animals: we extended the observation to human cortical bone studied with SEM. We report the presence of peculiar nonbanded calcification of the cornea in three patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, discovered on postmortem histological examination of the globes. In one patient, multiple calcium salt precipitates also affected other ocular and orbital structures. In an attempt to determine whether lead (Pb) in striated muscle can be taken up by motor axon, mice were injected intramuscularly with a 5% Pb nitrate solution, and the passage of Pb through the tissues was traced with electron microscopy. Nidation of gallstones by inorganic or organic Ca salts was studied in 336 consecutive cases by SEM/EDXA and additional methods (X-radiography, X-diffraction, IR spectroscopy). SEM/EDXA proved to be a useful method in studying very small radio-dense nuclei, since common means of phase analysis are limited because of the small amounts of material to be analyzed. A progressive nonedematous keratopathy developed in a 36-year-old patient after she was struck in the eye by glass fragments. Biopsy material that was examined by electron microscopy and electron beam microanalysis demonstrated the presence of intracorneal glass fragments, which could not be detected clinically. Retained intracorneal glass, generally thought to be completely inert, can be associated with a chronic keratopathy.

The intracellular electrolyte concentrations of the bullfrog corneal epithelium have been determined in thin freeze-dried cryosections using the technique of electron-microprobe analysis.
