CASE DESCRIPTION: 4 horses with enthesopathy and desmitis of the medial collateral ligament of the cubital joint were examined.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: All 4 horses had a history of acute, severe, unilateral forelimb lameness and had signs of pain during manipulation of the affected upper forelimb; 2 also had swelling in the axillary region. There was no improvement in lameness after diagnostic local analgesia below the carpal region, and 1 of 4 horses had mild improvement after cubital joint analgesia. Radiography revealed enthesophyte formation on the radial tuberosity and linear mineralization …

Flexor enthesopathy is a recently recognized elbow disorder in dogs and considered to be an important differential diagnosis for elbow lameness. Primary and concomitant forms of the disease have been previously described and treatments differ for the two forms. The goal of this prospective study was to compare magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings for dogs with primary flexor enthesopathy (n = 17), concomitant flexor enthesopathy (n = 23), elbow dysplasia alone (n = 13), and normal elbows (n = 7). Each elbow joint underwent MRI using the same low-field scanner. Sequences included transvers…

The purpose of this research is to examine whether degenerative joint diseases (DJD) and enthesopathies can be used in conjunction in research that aims to understand the activity levels of past populations. To examine this, the relationship between DJD and enthesopathies needs to be explored while taking different peripheral joints and types of entheses into account. In addition, the present research aims to examine the frequency of DJD and enthesopathies in the Joseon Dynasty population of Korea with comparisons with data in other skeletal series of similar dates. In this research, 173 indiv

This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of subclinical entheseal involvement at the greater trochanter level by ultrasound in patients with spondyloarthritis. Forty-six patients with spondyloarthritis and 46 healthy age- and sex-matched controls were studied. All patients with no clinical evidence of enthesopathy at the greater trochanter underwent an ultrasound examination. The following three entheses were scanned bilaterally: anterior insertion of gluteus minimus, anterior insertion of gluteus medius, and posterior insertion of gluteus medius. Ultrasound findings of enthesopath…

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the epidemiology of bone changes related to degenerative joint disease and enthesopathies in the earliest Neolithic population identified in Europe (dated back 7700 years), to compare the findings with those in medieval and contemporary populations, and to draw etiological inferences.
METHODS: Examination of the skeletal remains of 119 individuals older than 20 years of age at death and buried in two Central European cemeteries dated as far back as 7700 years (5700 BC).
RESULTS: The propensity for developing degenerative disease seemed to vary among individuals, as

HLA-B27 is a risk factor for several human diseases through a mechanism that is not yet understood. This article describes a naturally occurring joint disease in laboratory mice, ANKENT. ANKENT begins with mild inflammation and culminates in irreversible stiffening of the ankle and/or tarsal joints in one or both hind paws. The macroscopic and histologic features of ANKENT, its relationship to age, gender, and environment, and some immunologic aspects are considered. With respect to genetics, it is demonstrated that an HLA-B27 transgene is a relative risk factor for ANKENT. Its impact depends

Enthesopathies are bony lesions involving the sites of insertion of muscles or ligaments. Those caused by hyperactivity of the relevant musc … aleoenvironments show that overall 20% of the skeletons presented lesions. Three different forms of enthesopathy involved the arm, principally the elbow, and may be tentatively correlated with javelin throwing, wood cutting, and archery. Two types of lesion involving the foot were observed in skeletons from a hunter-gatherer population and may be correlated wi …

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the distinctive bilateral, serological, and radiographic phenotype of diabetic enthesopathy using standardized quantitative ultrasonography with validated cutoff thresholds.
METHODS: This cross-sectional extended analysis of a previously published cohort enrolled 60 patients with diabetes (17 T1DM, 43 T2DM). Five bilateral entheseal sites were evaluated using the Glasgow Ultrasound Enthesitis Scoring System (GUESS) methodology with validated thickness cutoffs (> 6.1 mm quadriceps, >4.0 mm patellar, >5.2 mm Achilles, >4.4 mm plantar fascia). Rheumatoid factor (RF), a…

BACKGROUND: Enthesopathy and enthesitis, including rotator cuff disease and other tendon disorders, represent a heterogeneous group of musculoskeletal conditions with complex etiologies. Understanding how systemic health profiles influence their onset remains a critical challenge in musculoskeletal medicine.
METHODS: We conducted a large-scale, phenome-wide comorbidity analysis using longitudinal electronic health records (EHR) from 432,757 UK Biobank participants. Incident cases of peripheral enthesopathies were compared to controls across 434 baseline disease phenotypes. A directed ego netw…

BACKGROUND: Significant distal interphalangeal joint (DIPJ) pathology, particularly affecting soft tissue and articular cartilage, is often not identifiable on radiographs but can be accompanied by joint capsule enthesopathy on the middle phalanx (P2), which can be readily identified.
OBJECTIVES: To explore frequency and correlations between DIPJ capsule enthesopathy identified on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and radiographs and DIPJ articular cartilage abnormalities and other concurrent soft tissue or osseous pathology within the foot found on MRI.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective descriptiv…

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a systemic hereditary autoinflammatory disorder. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship of enthesitis to FMF and to search the potential association between enthesitis and MEFV gene missense variations in patients with FMF. The study consisted of 72 FMF patients (mean age 29.12 ± 11.47 years, 32 females), 29 patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) (mean age 34.14 ± 11.73 years, 16 females), and 34 healthy volunteers (mean age 23.06 ± 6.41 years, 8 females). FMF patients were classified according to the kind of MEFV gene mutation. Doppler

Flexor enthesopathy is an important differential diagnosis for elbow lameness in dogs. The disorder can be a primary cause of elbow lameness or concomitant with other elbow pathology. Since treatment differs for primary and concomitant forms of flexor enthesopathy, a noninvasive method for distinguishing between them is needed. In the current prospective study, computed tomographic (CT) examination was performed before and after IV injection of contrast in 17 dogs with primary flexor enthesopathy, 24 dogs with concomitant flexor enthesopathy, 13 dogs with elbow dysplasia, and seven normal dogs…

OBJECTIVE: Behçet's syndrome is characterized by clusters of disease expression, one of which is the coexistence of acne and arthritis. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that enthesopathy is increased in this cluster, having features reminiscent of acne-associated arthritis.
METHODS: The study group comprised 35 patients with Behçet's syndrome who had acne and arthritis (BS-AA), 38 patients with Behçet's syndrome who did not have arthritis (BS-WA), 37 patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), 25 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and 25 healthy control subjects. Five ent…

OBJECTIVE: To study further the temporal clustering of ankylosing enthesopathy (AE) noted originally during a study of the influence of mouse major histocompatibility complex (MHC) H-2 and transgenic HLA-B27 on the frequency of AE.
METHODS: The relationship between maternal age at littering and frequency of AE was analysed.
RESULTS: Mice born to mothers aged eight months or older had a significantly lower disease frequency of AE than mice born to mothers younger than eight months of age. This phenomenon was observed in three independent cohorts evaluated to date (p < 0.01, 0.025, and 0.05).

Enthesopathy is pathology of bony insertions of tendons, ligaments or joint capsules. It is a frequent finding in rheumatic diseases, like ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and Behçet's disease. Musculoskeletal complaints are common in patients with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), and these could be a clinical manifestation of enthesopathy. Hence, we investigated the possible association between FMF and enthesopathy. Fifty-six patients with FMF and 11 patients with FMF-associated spondyloarthropathy (FMFS) were enrolled. Forty-seven healthy individuals and 36 patients with AS formed the healthy …
