Impact of environmental pollutants on the male: effects on germ cell differentiation.

A variety of so-called innocuous chemicals can have insidious and long lasting effects on the developing male reproductive system. Developmental exposures of male rabbits to common industrial contaminants in drinking water (a mixture of arsenic, chromium, lead, benzene, chloroform, phenol, and trichloroethylene); alkyl phenols (e.g. octylphenol); water disinfection by-products (e.g. dibromoacetic acid); anti-androgenic pesticides (e.g. p,p'-DDT and vinclozolin); and plasticizers (e.g. dibutyl phthalate) produce testicular dysgenesis. The lesions include testicular carcinoma in situ, also calle

[Recent advances in enantiomeric separation of chiral environmental pollutants by capillary electrophoresis].

Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is an effective analytical tool in chiral separation. This review article is focused on the major developments in the recent applications of CE to the enantioseparation of the chiral environmental pollutants in the past decade. Developments are classified according to the types of chiral pollutants, i. e. phenoxyalkanoic acid herbicides, organophosphorus/organochlorine/pyrethroid pesticides, triazole fungicides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The advances in enantiomeric separation of the above-mentioned chiral pollutants by CE are reviewed. In addition, the e…

Effect of some environmental pollutants on the superoxide dismutase activity in Lemna.

Exposure of Lemna sp. to SO2 resulted in an increased activity of superoxide dismutase. About 3 to 4 fold increase in the activity was observed within 30 minutes after the plants were fumigated with 10 ml/l of SO2. Paraquat, a well known superoxide generator, doubled the enzyme activity after 1 hour of treatment with 0.1 mM paraquat. Superoxide dismutase activity was also enhanced by cadmium treatment but the response was not immediate. Optimum increase in the activity of enzyme was observed after 4 days of treatment with 40 mg/l of cadmium in the medium. Treatment with H2O2 very clearly inhib

Neonatal exposure to environmental pollutants and placental mitochondrial DNA content: A multi-pollutant approach.

BACKGROUND: Placental mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content can be indicative of oxidative damage to the placenta during fetal development and is responsive to external stressors. In utero exposure to environmental pollutants that may influence placental mtDNA needs further exploration. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated if placental mtDNA content is altered by environmental pollution in newborns and identified pollutants independently associated to alterations in placental mtDNA content. METHODS: mtDNA content was measured in placental tissue of 233 newborns. Four perfluoroalkyl compounds and nine organo…

[Pneumological aspects of environmental medicine. Medical relevance of environmental pollution of outdoor air (1)].

The most important pollutants of industrial air pollution of the external air are sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitric oxides (NOX), oxygen radicals (ozone, O3) and sulfur dust. Brief detrimental effects on respiratory function of adults with healthy lungs are only observed during relatively high concentration of the pollutant, i.e. sulfur dioxide concentrations above 1500 micrograms/m3 or ozone 400 micrograms/m3. However, such a view of single pollutants is without medical relevance since all pollutants usually take effect as a pathological synergism in changing concentrations. Significant disturbanc

Environmental pollutants as emerging disruptors of thyroid function: Mechanisms and early-life risks.

Thyroid hormones are essential regulators of metabolism, growth, and neurodevelopment, and disruptions in thyroid function can have profound health consequences, particularly during critical periods such as pregnancy and early childhood. Increasing evidence suggests that exposure to environmental pollutants, including persistent organic pollutants (POPs), bisphenols, heavy metals, pesticides, air pollutants, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), can adversely affect thyroid hormone balance. This review provides a comprehensive summary of epidemiological, experimental, and mechanistic…

Influence of environmental pollutants and climatic factors on ocular allergy and dry eye.

BACKGROUND: Ocular allergy is one of the most common ophthalmologic conditions. The prevalence of these disorders has increased in recent years due to environmental factors such as air pollution and allergens. The interaction between allergies and lacrimal gland dysfunction may contribute to the development of dry eye, which exacerbates symptoms in these patients. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of ocular allergy (OA), dry eye and the association of symptoms with levels of environmental pollutants and atmospheric conditions. METHODS: Skin tests were performed to determine sensitiza…

Engineering a Ru(ii) Nanostructure for Oxygen-Free Photocatalytic Degradation of Environmental Pollutants.

The development of high-performing photocatalysts with visible-light-absorbing and oxidative properties for the degradation of organic contaminants in anaerobic microenvironments remains a challenge. Herein, a Ru-complex decorated with coumarin ([Ru(phen)2Cur]Cl2) molecules was created to achieve high absorption capacities and photocatalytic activity. Taking advantage of the nanoparticulate structure, the transformation of [Ru(phen)2Cur]Cl2 molecules into Ru(II) nanostructures (RuCur NPs) not only exhibited an extensive broad visible-light absorption spectrum but also possessed enhanced inters

Targeted determination of volatile fluoroalkyl pollutants and non-targeted screening for environmental monitoring.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental contaminants known for their toxicity, mobility, and bioaccumulation. Efficient sample preparation and analysis of these compounds are critical for environmental monitoring. In this study, a novel analytical methodology is presented, integrating dynamic headspace extraction (DHS) and thermal desorption (TD) with one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOFMS) for the quantification of target volatile and semi-volatile PFAS. Such an approach also enables the non-t

Environmental risk assessment of pharmaceutical pollutants in the Oro River Sub-basin (Colombia).

Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Compounds (PPCPs) are contaminants present in wastewater and in the receiving surface waters, which have no regulations and can bring on environmental risks. In this study, we evaluated the presence of six PPCPs in the Oro River Sub-basin (Colombia) and the environmental risk associated with them. We have verified that the monitored rivers show the presence of Ibuprofen, Cephalexin and Carbamazepine; the first ones (Ibuprofen and cephalexin) were those that presented higher concentrations since they are widely prescribed in Colombia. Pharmaceutical compound co

Exposure to environmental air pollutants as a risk factor for primary Sjögren's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Environmental etiology of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS), an autoimmune disease, has been proposed. This study determined whether the exposure to air pollutants was an independent risk factor for pSS. METHODS: Participants were enrolled from a population-based cohort registry. Daily average concentrations of air pollutants from 2000 to 2011 were divided into 4 quartiles. Adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) of pSS for exposure to air pollutants were estimated in a Cox proportional regression model adjusting for age, sex, socioeconomic status, and residential areas. A subgroup analysis

Anoxygenic phototrophic purple non-sulfur bacteria: tool for bioremediation of hazardous environmental pollutants.

The extraordinary metabolic flexibility of anoxygenic phototrophic purple non-sulfur bacteria (PNSB) has been exploited in the development of various biotechnological applications, such as wastewater treatment, biohydrogen production, improvement of soil fertility and plant growth, and recovery of high-value compounds. These versatile microorganisms can also be employed for the efficient bioremediation of hazardous inorganic and organic pollutants from contaminated environments. Certain members of PNSB, especially strains of Rhodobacter sphaeroides and Rhodopseudomonas palustris, exhibit effic

Highlighting the compound risk of COVID-19 and environmental pollutants using geospatial technology.

The new COVID-19 coronavirus disease has emerged as a global threat and not just to human health but also the global economy. Due to the pandemic, most countries affected have therefore imposed periods of full or partial lockdowns to restrict community transmission. This has had the welcome but unexpected side effect that existing levels of atmospheric pollutants, particularly in cities, have temporarily declined. As found by several authors, air quality can inherently exacerbate the risks linked to respiratory diseases, including COVID-19. In this study, we explore patterns of air pollution f

Case Report of Central Precocious Puberty in a Female: Role of Environmental Pollutants?

A 5-year-old girl was brought to Department of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes for premature breast development since 4 months. Her medical antecedents and family history were uneventful. From investigations she was diagnosed as a case of central precocious puberty. Identification of pesticides in farms surrounding their house indicates that this early stimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis was linked to the estrogen-like activity of endocrine-disrupting compounds.

Shadow prices of emerging pollutants in wastewater treatment plants: Quantification of environmental externalities.

Conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are designed to remove mainly the organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus compounds and suspended solids from wastewater but are not capable of removing chemicals of human origin, such as pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs). The presence of PPCPs in wastewater has environmental effects on the water bodies receiving the WWTP effluents and renders the effluent as unsuitable as a nonconventional water source. Considering PPCPs as non-desirable outputs, the shadow prices methodology has been implemented using the output distance functi
