OBJECTIVE: An increased level of endothelin (ET)-1 seems to be involved in the development of augmented cerebrovascular resistance in different pathological conditions, most notably vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage. Therefore, interfering with the ET synthesis or ET receptor blockade may be a promising approach in the treatment of cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage. Although the receptors mediating the effects of ET-1 human cerebrovasculature are well characterized, data concerning the functionally relevant ET-converting enzyme (ECE) activity are scarce.

The catalytic activity of four lyophilized oxidative enzymes-horseradish peroxidase, soybean peroxidase, Caldariomyces fumago chloroperoxidase, and mushroom polyphenol oxidase-is much lower when directly suspended in organic solvents containing little water than when they are introduced into the same largely nonaqueous media by first dissolving them in water and then diluting with anhydrous solvents. Platelet-activating factor (PAF) may influence neuronal migration, and gyral anomaly in hemimegalencephaly is believed to result from a neuronal disorder. A 7-month-old girl with hemimegalencephaly presented with intractable seizures, for which graded hemispherectomy was performed. In the resected specimen, we could not detect PAF, and related enzyme activities were low. These results suggest a role of PAF in neuronal migration.

Activities of twelve hydrolytic enzymes in the digestive tract of young rabbits before weaning (4 weeks old) and adult rabbits (3 months old) were measured. The principal digestive enzymes in both groups of rabbits appeared to be amylase (EC 3.2.1.1), maltase (EC 3.2.1.20), pectinase (EC 3.2.1.15) and proteinases. Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is a degenerative disease caused by the deficiency of aryl sulfatase (ASA). It can course with psychiatric symptoms. BACKGROUND: The primary defense against oxidation damage of tissues are anti-oxidant enzymes, e.g. superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase. Some non-enzymatic substances have a significant anti-oxidant action (e.g. vitamin C, E, beta-carotene and others). The objective of the present work was to follow up the Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase activity, catalase and glutathione peroxidase (anti-oxidant enzymes of the gastric mucosa) in subjects with the risk of developing gastric cancer, e.g. those suffering from atrophic gastritis, hyperplastic polyps and gastric adenoma.

An enzyme activity which converts retinal to retinoic acid was found in the cytosol of rat kidney. The oxidation of retinal was pH-, temperature-, time- and protein-dependent. Studies showed a significant decrease in the macrophage neutral protease and lymphocyte acid protease activities in patients with multiple sclerosis in remission, a significantly decreased neutral protease activity in macrophages in patients with myasthenia gravis and a significantly decreased acid protease activity in macrophages and lymphocytes in patients with polymyositis. No remarkable abnormalities were found in patients with myotonic dystrophy. These results suggest that multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis and polymyositis have an abnormality in immunological function.

The authors report on two cases of Mooren's ulcer. Tear immunoglobulin levels and proteolytic enzyme activity were determined in the different stages of the disease. The latter proved to be more reliable in the assessment of the progress and prognosis of Mooren's ulcer.
