[Epidemiology and influencing factors of babesiosis: a review].

Babesiosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by tick-borne Babesia species. Currently, more than 100 species of Babesia have been characterized, including at least 4 species that may infect humans. Babesiosis is prevalent across the world, and humans are commonly susceptible to babesiosis. The incidence of babesiosis appears an obvious seasonal distribution, and peaks in summer and autumn. Recently, the number of reported babesiosis cases has increased year by year with the improvement of diagnostic and monitoring capabilities, and the range of animal hosts has continued to expand. [Epidemiology and risk factors of ANCAassociated vasculitides].

EPIDEMIOLOGY AND RISK FACTORS OF ANCA-ASSOCIATED VASCULITIDES. ANCA-associated vasculitides (AAV) are a group of small-vessel vasculitides including microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GEPA). These are rare diseases, with a worldwide incidence estimated at 17.2 new cases per million person-years (with great variability according to the studies, the methodology, and geographic location). Their prevalence in France is around 100 cases per million inhabitants. The incidence and prevalence of AAV seems to have i

Epidemiology and Risk Factors of Uterine Fibroids.

Risk factors, both modifiable and non-modifiable, are associated with the development of fibroids. These include age, race, endogenous and exogenous hormonal factors, obesity, uterine infection, and lifestyle (diet, caffeine and alcohol consumption, physical activity, stress, and smoking). Some of the epidemiological data were conflicting; consequently, further studies are needed to better understand the factors that influence fibroid prevalence.

Epidemiology and risk factors: intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is a rare entity with a distinct clinical course and epidemiology from hilar and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. ICC makes up 8-10% of cholangiocarcinomas and 10-20% of all primary liver tumors. There remains a considerable amount of geographic variation in the incidence of ICC worldwide; however, the overall incidence of this malignancy appears to be rising. Several risk factors have been identified, such as infectious causes (liver flukes, viral hepatitis), biliary tract disease [primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), hepaticolithiasis, biliary cystic di

Ovarian cancer: epidemiology and risk factors.

The present overview of ovarian cancer epidemiology summarizes the main results for a network of case-control studies in Italy and from the Collaborative Group on Epidemiological Studies of Ovarian Cancer. There are consistent inverse relations between parity, oral contraceptive use and the risk of ovarian cancer. For other menstrual and hormonal factors (i.e. early age at menarche and late menopause), there are established associations, but of limited impact on ovarian cancer incidence on a population level. Serous and endometrioid ovarian cancers (but not mucinous or clear cell types) are re

[Amblyopia. Epidemiology, causes and risk factors].

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia is the main cause for mostly monocular, impaired vision in childhood. Treatment and prevention of amblyopia is only effective during childhood. Ophthalmological screening of children does not yet exist in Germany. EPIDEMIOLOGY: The prevalence of amblyopia in Germany is 5.6%, which is higher than in reports from studies in Australia; however, the prevalence of amblyopia is not comparable in these studies due to different definitions of amblyopia and the inclusion/exclusion criteria of the study cohorts. At present it is unknown at what age ophthalmological screening shoul

Epidemiology, prognosis, and risk factors in mastocytosis.

This article updates current knowledge about epidemiology, prognosis, and risk factors for major complications in mastocytosis. A prevalence of mastocytosis of 1 in 10000 inhabitants has been reported, but underdiagnosis is assumed. The prognosis for cutaneous and indolent systemic mastocytosis is excellent. For more advanced forms of disease, prognostic parameters have been identified. A high extent of skin involvement, increased basal serum tryptase values, and extensive blistering are risk factors for severe mast cell activation episodes in children, whereas these associations seem to be le

Gastric cancer: epidemiology and risk factors.

The incidence of gastric cancer is decreasing and lies between 10 and 15 new cases per 100,000 population per year in most Western countries. Peak age is between 60 and 80 years. While distal gastric cancers account for the overall decrease in gastric cancer, tumors in the proximal stomach (cardia and esophagogastric junction) are on the rise. Recognized risk factors for gastric cancer are infection with Helicobacter pylori, dietary factors (e.g. high intake of salt-preserved foods), smoking, pernicious anemia and a history of partial gastrectomy.

Factors involved in the paradox of reverse epidemiology.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The hypothesis of reverse epidemiology holds that some cardiovascular risk factors, such as obesity, hypercholesterolemia and hypertension, in the elderly or in some chronic diseases are not harmful but permit better survival. However, this phenomenon is controversial and the underlying reasons are poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To search for factors simultaneously linked to reverse epidemiology and to short or long term survival. METHODS: We included 400 patients, older than 60 years, hospitalized in a general internal medicine unit; 61 died in hospital and 338 were follow

Epidemiology and risk factors for kidney cancer.

After more than two decades of rising rates, in recent years the total kidney cancer incidence worldwide has shown signs of stabilizing, or even decreasing. In adults, kidney cancer consists of renal cell carcinoma (RCC), the predominant form, and renal transitional cell carcinoma (RTCC); these types primarily arise in the renal parenchyma and renal pelvis, respectively. Although temporal trends by kidney cancer type are not well established worldwide, incidence of RCC in the US has continued to rise, mainly for early-stage tumors, while that of RTCC has declined, and total kidney cancer morta

Pancreatic cancer: epidemiology and risk factors.

Ductal adenocarcinoma of the pancreas has an incidence of approximately 10 per 100,000 population per year. This number pertains to Europe, North America and parts of South America (Argentina). Men are more often afflicted than women (female:male ratio of about 1:1.5, though reports vary). There has been a very small but steady increase in the incidence over the last 50 years. Unfortunately, numbers for incidence and mortality are still practically identical for this cancer. The peak of incidence is between 60 and 80 years of age. In absolute numbers, there are 8,000 cases diagnosed annually i

[Pulmonary aspiration: epidemiology and risk factors].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the epidemiology and risk factors for gastric aspiration in a French university hospital. METHODS: Files were prospectively selected from a computer database of rare and severe complications between January 2002 et April 2007. Medical files were then analyzed according to a predetermined list of specific items. RESULTS: Forty patients suffered from gastric aspiration among 117 033 anaesthesias (4 medical files lost) (31/100,000 global incidence). All occurred during general anaesthesia, 83% at induction, 8% in the recovery room, half of the cases for emergent cases (1

Epidemiology, risk factors, and pathogenesis of cholangiocarcinoma.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a fatal cancer of the biliary epithelium, arising either within the liver (intrahepatic, ICC) or in the extrahepatic bile ducts (extrahepatic ECC). Globally, CCA is the second most common primary hepatic malignancy. Several recent epidemiological studies have shown that the incidence and mortality rates of ICC are increasing. This review of the literature on the international epidemiological rates of CCA, both intra- and extrahepatic, explores possible explanations for the trends found. The possible role of epidemiological artifact in the findings is discussed and t

[Systemic sclerosis: epidemiology and environmental factors].

The pathophysiology of systemic sclerosis (SSc), probably multifactorial, is not yet well elucidated. Among the many endogenous and exogenous factors probably involved, environmental and occupational elements may play an essential role. SSc is a rare disease. Prevalence is estimated between 3 and 24 per 100,000 population. Reports of sporadic clusters of higher prevalence suggest environmental factors, which have not yet been defined. Silica, first suggested in 1917, plays a role in SSc development, as officially recognized in France for purposes of workers' compensation. Solvents have been as

Epidemiology and risk factors of periodontal diseases.

Periodontal diseases are chronic inflammatory disorders encompassing destructive and nondestructive diseases of the periodontal supporting tissues of teeth. Gingivitis is a nondestructive disease ubiquitous in populations of children and adults globally. Aggressive periodontitis is characterized by severe and rapid loss of periodontal attachment often commencing at or after the circumpubertal age and is more prevalent among Latin Americans and subjects of African descent, and least common among Caucasians. Chronic periodontitis is a common disease and may occur in most age groups, but is most

Gastric cancer epidemiology and risk factors.

We performed a detailed analysis of the epidemiology of gastric carcinoma, based upon a review of the literature in English. The analysis reveals many puzzling features. There has been a steady fall in the incidence of gastric carcinoma in most societies studied, but a more recent steady rise in the incidence of adenocarcinoma of the cardia and lower esophagus, largely confined to White males. Although the evidence for a major role for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in the etiology of gastric corpus cancer is compelling; in Western society, it probably accounts for fewer than half the cases.
