Rhabdomyolysis (RML) arises from the breakdown of muscle tissue, leading to the release of intracellular components into the bloodstream and potentially causing multi-organ failure. Erythromycin is commonly used for the empirical treatment of community-acquired pneumonia, but there is some concern about its usefulness when Q fever is suspected because of in-vitro studies showing a lack of efficacy against Coxiella burnetii. The emergence of Haemophilus ducreyi resistant to multiple antibiotics has limited the effectiveness of sulfonamides and tetracycline for the therapy of chancroid. A randomized, double-blind study compared 10-day courses of erythromycin base (500 mg) and rosaramicin (250 mg) each given four times daily for the treatment of men with chancroid in Nairobi, Kenya. The in-vitro antibacterial activities of erythromycin, lincomycin, and clindamycin, a new derivative of lincomycin, were compared.
