Ethics of nursing in the digital age: perceptions and challenges among Korean nursing students.

BACKGROUND: The advancement of digital technologies has brought transformative changes across the healthcare sector, and nursing is no exception. However, existing research has largely overlooked the ethical challenges nursing students face in real-world clinical settings, including dilemmas arising from the integration of artificial intelligence, patient privacy, and digital communication. This study explored nursing students' perceptions and challenges regarding nursing ethics in the digital age, focusing on the ethical dilemmas they face and their strategies for resolution. METHODS: We con

Bioethicists' Perspectives on Ethical Research: Results of the "Views in Bioethics Survey".

Health research plays a crucial role in advancing medicine and public health, but ethical constraints shape its conduct. This study presents findings from the Views in Bioethics Survey (VIBeS), the first large-scale systematic survey of bioethicists in the United States, which aimed to assess perspectives on key research ethics issues. We surveyed 824 bioethicists on topics including human challenge trials, research without explicit consent, financial incentives for participation, local standards of care, and the publication of high-risk research. Our findings reveal areas of consensus-such as

Establishing a framework for a physician assistant/bioethics dual degree program.

: Numerous medical schools currently offer a master of arts (MA) in bioethics dual degree for physicians. A degree in bioethics enhances the care physicians provide to patients and prepares physicians to serve on ethics committees and consult services. Additionally, they may work on institutional and public policy issues related to ethics. Several physician assistant (PA) programs currently offer a master of public health (MPH) dual degree for PAs. A degree in public health prepares PAs for leadership roles in meeting community health needs. With the success of PA/MPH dual degree programs, we

Nurses' and midwives' ethical perspectives on euthanasia legalisation in advanced cancer care.

BackgroundEuthanasia remains a highly debated issue in end-of-life care because it raises ethical concerns surrounding patient autonomy, relief of suffering, professional responsibilities, and the sanctity of life. Nurses and midwives frequently face these ethical challenges in caring for patients with advanced illness, yet evidence on their perspectives within sub-Saharan African cancer care settings remains limited.AimThis study explored nurses' and midwives' ethical perspectives and perceived implications regarding the potential legalisation of euthanasia in advanced cancer care in Ghana.Re

Connecting care: Understanding the relational dimensions of supporting migrant children and young people living with sickle cell disease.

Migrant children and young people (CYP) living with sickle cell disease (SCD) in the UK face persistent, intersecting barriers to care. While existing research often maps these barriers, less is known about how service providers navigate them in practice. This study draws on Tronto's ethics of care framework (1993; 2013) to examine how healthcare professionals and third-sector organisation workers enact care for migrant CYP living with SCD within a fragmented and unequal health system. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 23 service providers, comprising 14 healthcare professionals and

Malaysia's commemorative activities for the second Asia Laboratory Animal Day (ALAD).

Malaysia's commemoration of the second Asia Laboratory Animal Day (ALAD) in 2025 marked a notable step forward in strengthening national and regional laboratory animal science, ethical governance, and humane research practices. Celebrated a day earlier on 28 November, an initiative led by the Laboratory Animal Science Association of Malaysia (LASAM), comprised a coordinated three-month programme from September to November. A series of targeted activities were conducted, including professional exchange visits, competency-based rodent care and use workshops, refinement-centred blood sampling tra

How did Ontario healthcare institutions implement and legitimize Covid-19 vaccine mandates? A qualitative multi‑method study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Upon the WHO declaration of Covid-19 as a pandemic, healthcare workers (HCWs) - unvaccinated by necessity - were celebrated as "heroes" for their service under difficult conditions. Later, as some of them resisted vaccine mandates, they were reframed as "threats", regardless of personal behaviour, workplace setting, or evidence of their harmfulness. This discursive shift and the institutional mechanisms supporting it remain underexamined. GOAL: This protocol outlines a qualitative multi‑method study investigating the implementation of Covid-19 vaccine mandates in medical establish

Hyperbaric Oxygen in Lower Limb Trauma (HOLLT); protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Open fractures with significant soft tissue injury are associated with high rates of complications, such as non-union, infection, chronic pain and disability. Complications often require further inpatient care, and in many cases, multiple operations and prolonged rehabilitation. Use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy as an adjunct to standard orthopaedic trauma care has the potential to reduce the complications of musculoskeletal injury and thus improve outcomes. Two previous randomised trials have suggested some positive effect, but neither functional measures nor long-term outcomes w

Single-arm, multicentre phase II trial of sintilimab plus platinum-based doublet chemotherapy followed by adaptive radiotherapy strategy for patients with unresectable stage III non-small-cell lung cancer in China: the ART-LUNG 01 study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Consolidation immunotherapy postchemoradiotherapy is standard for unresectable stage III non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) per PACIFIC and GEMSTONE-301, but optimal integration with chemoradiotherapy is unclear, especially for large tumours. Induction immunotherapy before concurrent chemoradiotherapy (cCRT) may enhance tumour downstaging and immune synergy, while adaptive radiotherapy with strict lung constraints (V20 ≤20%) could reduce toxicity. This trial aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of sintilimab with induction chemotherapy followed by adaptive radiotherapy and co

Burn Care in Prisons: Ethical Dilemmas in Correctional Health Care.

Burn injuries among incarcerated individuals represent an underexplored intersection of medical ethics, correctional policy, and health equity. Although scholarship increasingly examines vulnerable groups such as refugees and undocumented patients, incarcerated burn patients remain largely absent. Dual loyalty-balancing duty to the patient with obligations to the institution or state-creates distinctive challenges that are intensified in burn care, where timely intervention, pain control, rehabilitation, and psychosocial support are critical but often constrained by security protocols and syst

A call for a streamlined ethics review process for multijurisdictional, child health research studies.

To be time and resource efficient in neonatal research and to answer clinically relevant questions with validity and generalizability, large numbers of infants from multiple hospitals need to be included. Multijurisdictional research in Canada is currently fraught with research ethics review process hurdles that lead to delays, administrative costs, and possibly termination of projects. We describe our experience applying for ethics review to 13 sites in 7 provinces for a project comparing two standard of care therapies for preterm born infants with respiratory distress syndrome. We welcome th

Characteristics and clinical outcomes of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus initiating anifrolumab in a real-world setting in Spain (AZAHAR study): an observational study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Anifrolumab (Saphnelo) is approved for adult patients with moderate-severe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Considering its commercialisation in Spain in 2023, observational studies describing the use of anifrolumab in routine clinical practice are limited. The aim of the AZAHAR study is to describe the characteristics and clinical outcomes of patients with SLE who initiated anifrolumab during its first year of marketing in Spain. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is an observational retrospective study including ~120 patients with moderate-severe SLE who received anifrolumab in Spa

[Neuroethics: new quality of medical ethics?].

During the last decade there has been a striking growth in interest in ethical issues arising from the development of neurosciences. It was as late as 2002 that the new discipline, called neuroethics, started. It was intended to be a new area of interdisciplinary discourse on moral dilemmas connected with recent advances in, broadly understood, neurosciences. Ten years after its launch neuroethics possesses a distinct body of knowledge and an institutional basis for its further development. As a very young discipline, however, neuroethics is still in a state offlux. Two essential theoretical c

Patient safety as ethical practice: A qualitative study of the Protection of Life principle in nursing care.

BackgroundPatient safety is commonly conceptualized through ethical reductionism, risk management, and technical performance indicators. However, such approaches may insufficiently address the ethical, relational, spiritual, and culturally embedded dimensions of nursing care. Within Islamic ethical thought, the principle of Hifz al-Nafs (protection of life) offers a holistic moral framework for understanding patient protection beyond biomedical risk prevention.AimThis study aimed to explore Indonesian nurses' ethical understandings and lived experiences of patient safety and caring and to exam

Structural moral distress among nurse middle managers in crisis.

BackgroundAt a time marked by ongoing global instability and health emergencies, the ethical and operational burdens on healthcare systems derived from the COVID-19 crisis, remain urgently relevant. Positioned between frontline staff and senior management, nurse middle managers (NMMs) were tasked during the pandemic with implementing institutional policies while simultaneously supporting teams facing rapid clinical and emotional challenges. Despite the pivotal role of NMMs, there exists a significant gap in understanding the ethical challenges and the strategies they employed during time of cr

Governance frameworks and decision-making models for intensive care units in low- and middle-income countries: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Intensive care units (ICUs) operate at the intersection of advanced technology, complex ethical decision-making and resource-intensive care. While many high-income countries have developed institutional governance mechanisms-such as Clinical Ethics Committees, structured triage policies and formal palliative care consultation pathways-to support ethical deliberation and accountability in ICUs, the applicability, structure and reported outcomes of such frameworks in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remain unclear and dispersed across disciplines. OBJECTIVE: This scoping r

Ethics committees, organ transplantation and public policy.

It is clear that ethics committees face many dilemmas in developing sound public policy on organ transplantation through their roles in serving their institutions and their communities. With conscientiousnes and good faith, different committees may adopt different approaches to the same issue, and arrive at different solutions when subscribing to the same approach. It is valuable that committee members should be aware of other committees' approaches and disclose the reasons for their own in a frank, non-defensive way. It should also be remembered that a measure of legitimacy can attach to ethi
