Antifungal Potentials of Asian Plants: Ethnobotanical Insights and Phytochemical Investigations.

Ethnomedicinal plants in Asia offer a promising, low-side-effect alternative to synthetic drugs for treating fungal infections, one of the most widespread communicable diseases caused by pathogenic fungi. Despite being underexplored, the region's rich plant diversity holds the potential for developing effective antifungal drugs. Research is increasingly focused on bioactive compounds from these plants, which show strong antifungal properties and may serve as leads for new drug development. This comprehensive review included 257 articles which are peer-reviewed and written in english language w

The predictive utility of the plant phylogeny in identifying sources of cardiovascular drugs.

CONTEXT: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death globally, responsible for over 17 million (31%) deaths in the world. Novel pharmacological interventions may be needed given the high prevalence of CVD. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to find potential new sources of cardiovascular (CV) drugs from phylogenetic and pharmacological analyses of plant species that have experimental and traditional CV applications in the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reconstructed the molecular phylogeny of these plant species and mapped their pharmacological mechanisms of action o

Wild medicinal and food plants used by communities living in Mopane woodlands of southern Angola: Results of an ethnobotanical field investigation.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Mopane woodlands play an important role in the livelihood strategies of local populations; however, they have been scarcely investigated by ethnobiologists and very little is currently known about plants traditionally used by local communities, especially about medicinal plants. AIM OF THE STUDY: Our investigation was aimed to document ethnobotanical knowledge in seven communities living in conditions of extreme poverty in a Mopane area of southern Angola (Namibe province). We focused on plants used as medicines and/or food, in order to highlight the role of wi

Medicinal plants and Alzheimer's disease: Integrating ethnobotanical and contemporary scientific evidence.

The use of complementary medicines such as plant extracts in dementia therapy, varies according to the different cultural traditions. In orthodox Western medicine, contrasting with that in China and the Far East for example, pharmacological properties of traditional cognitive or memory enhancing plants have not been widely investigated in the context of current models of Alzheimer's disease. An exception is Ginkgo biloba in which the ginkgolides have antioxidant, neuroprotective, and cholinergic activities relevant to Alzheimer's disease mechanisms. The therapeutic efficacy of Ginkgo biloba ex

Letter and landscape: early Soviet plant hunting in Transbaikalia and the relocations of Tibetan medicine between environments and epistemologies.

The early decades of Soviet rule saw dramatic developments in medicine and public health. Many regions of the new state, particularly the so-called 'national peripheries', underwent extensive health reform. Vernacular medical practices, which were often embedded in religious doctrines, were to be eradicated. Paradoxically, a keen interest in alternative medical knowledge also emerged, resulting in institutionalised research in ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology and recruiting heterodox practitioners as research partners. This article discusses how Buryat Tibetan medicine of Transbaikal Buddhist…

Review and cross-cultural analysis of medicinal plants traditionally used in Mauritania.

BACKGROUND: Mauritania has the most detailed and diverse knowledge on traditional plant remedies of medicinal plant use, despite its comparatively limited native flora due to its low population density and severe desert climate. However, the country is at the crossroads of Sub-Saharan African and Arabo-Berber cultures. Despite this, the country's ethnobotanical expertise is severely under documented. METHODS: The study was conducted through an extensive review of ethnobotanical and ethnopharmacological studies, scientific reports, and historical records related to the traditional use of medic

Traditional herbal remedies used in the management of sexual impotence and erectile dysfunction in western Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The utilisation of ethnobotanical indigenous knowledge is vital in male sexual reproductive health care delivery in western Uganda. Reproductive health care is the second most prevalent health care problem in Africa. However, this concept of reproductive health care has been focusing mainly on women disregarding men. Thus, some diseases such as sexual impotence and erectile dysfunction that deserve mention are regarded as petty though important in economic productivity, family stability and sexually transmitted diseases control including HIV/AIDS. OBJECTIVE: This study was carried

Characteristics of adverse reactions to kratom and implementation of harm reduction strategies in a sample of ethnobotanical tea bar patrons in Colorado.

BACKGROUND: Kratom is a psychoactive botanical that is increasingly popular in the United States. While potential risks of kratom use have been identified, research on harm reduction strategies and contextual factors contributing to adverse reactions is limited. Given that kratom is federally unregulated at present, and a variety of kratom products are widely available on the commercial market, more data are needed to inform harm reduction efforts and public health messaging. METHODS: 102 participants (mean age = 22.34 years, 39.2% women) were recruited from ethnobotanical tea bars in Norther

Ethnobotanical Uses and Phytochemical, Pharmacological, Behavioral, and Toxicological Effects of Montanoa Species Used by Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican Cultures for Anxiety and Depression.

Ancient cultures have long studied plants for medicinal use. Today, multidisciplinary research focuses on re-evaluating these plants to discover drugs for treating various diseases, including psychiatric disorders. Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures described three plants (Montanoa tomentosa, Montanoa frutescens, and Montanoa grandiflora) for treating both anxiety and depression disorders, which were called cihuapahtli in Nahuatl. This narrative review describes and analyzes the ethnobotanical use and phytochemical, pharmacological, behavioral, and toxicological effects of cihuapahtli, which
