An online survey of tobacco use, intentions to quit, and cessation strategies among people living with bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Tobacco use is prevalent among people living with bipolar disorder. We examined tobacco use, attempts to quit, and tobacco-relat … to treat their mental illness, and 96% believed being mentally healthy was important for quitting. Ex-smokers (13% of sample) had not smoked for a median of 2.7 years; 48% quit 'cold turkey.' Most ex-smokers (64%) were in poor or fair mental health when they quit smoking. At the time of the survey, however, more ex-smokers described their mental health as i …

Smoking induces shifts in cellular composition and transcriptome within the bronchial mucus barrier.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Smoking disturbs the bronchial-mucus-barrier. This study assesses the cellular composition and gene expression shi … cohorts included 56 participants with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD] (38 smokers; 18 ex-smokers), 77 participants without COPD (40 never-smokers; 37 smokers) and 16 participants who stopped smoking for 1 year (11 COPD and 5 non-COPD-smokers). Differential gene expression was used to investigate gene expression shifts. The CD-derived goblet cel …

Effects of cigarette smoking on thyroid function and the prevalence of goitre, thyrotoxicosis and autoimmune thyroiditis.

The effect of smoking habits on thyroid function and the prevalence of thyroid diseases was studied in two birth cohorts (1928 and 1941) of men and women. A total of 1555 individuals (836 men and 719 women) were smokers. 1048 individuals (604 men and 444 women) were ex-smokers and 1497 individuals (560 men and 937 women) were non-smokers. The serum thyrotropin (TSH) concentration was significantly lower in smokers than in ex-smokers and non-smokers (P = 0.05 and P = 0.001, respectively). Smoking habits did not affect the serum triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations. The prevalence of non-toxic g…

Relationship between tobacco smoking and colorectal polyps.

A prospective endoscopic screening examination of a randomized population sample of 200 men and 200 women, aged 50-59 years, enabled the dif … licity of polyps. Two years' follow-up examination showed a tendency to fewer new polyps among male ex-smokers compared with smokers; however, the difference was not quite significant. No significant difference was found when comparing smokers with never smokers. In the relatively smaller groups of women no significant difference with regard to number of pol …

Unravelling the Information Contained in the Single Items of the COPD Assessment Test for Different Outcomes and Smoking Status in Patients with COPD: Results from COSYCONET.

BACKGROUND: The COPD Assessment Test (CAT) comprises eight questions. We evaluated the information that each of the questions and the total score contributed to outcomes and characteristics of chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), including their dependence on smoking status. METHODS: Patients with COPD of the COSYCONET cohort with Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) grades 1-4 and the former grade 0 were included. The evaluated outcomes included mortality, exacerbation risk, the comorbidities asthma, cardiac disease (coronary artery disease/heart failure), osteop

Tobacco smoking in patients with heart failure and coronary artery disease: A 20-year experience at Duke University Medical Center.

UNLABELLED: Smoking is associated with incident heart failure (HF), yet limited data are available exploring the association between smoking status and long-term outcomes in HF with reduced vs. preserved ejection fraction (i.e., HFrEF vs. HFpEF). METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of HF patients undergoing coronary angiography from 1990-2010. Patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and HF were stratified by EF (< 50% vs. ≥50%), smoking status (prior/current vs. never smoker), and level of smoking (light/moderate vs. heavy). Time-from-catheterization-to-event was examined using

The relationship between smoking, cholesterol, and HDL-C levels in adult women.

The purpose of this study was to determine the independent relationship between smoking quantity and cholesterol (TC) and lipoprotein levels (HDL-C) in women. A total of 805 female subjects were grouped as: non-smokers, ex-smokers, light smokers, moderate smokers, and heavy smokers. TC and HDL-C were examined before and after controlling for the coexisting risk factors of age, body composition, fitness level, dietary fat intake, family history of coronary artery disease, oral contraceptive, and alcohol use. Preliminary analysis demonstrated significant differences (p < .01) in TC between heavy…

Survival benefit of skip metastases in surgically resected N2 non-small cell lung cancer: A multicenter observational study of a large cohort of the Chinese patients.

INTRODUCTION: N2 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) without N1 involvement, also known as skip metastases (pN0N2), has been suggested as a subgroup of heterogeneous N2 disease with better survival. This real-world observational study aimed to elucidate the prognostic impacts of skip N2 metastases using a large number of pathologic N2 NSCLC from 10 participating centers in China. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records of pN2 NSCLC patients after surgical resection at 10 thoracic surgery centers between January 2014 and September 2017 were retrospectively reviewed based on the LinkDoc database.

Association Between Smoking Status and the Efficacy and Safety of Tofacitinib in Patients with Ulcerative Colitis.

BACKGROUND: Tofacitinib is an oral Janus kinase inhibitor for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). This analysis assessed the impact of cigarette smoking on tofacitinib efficacy and safety in the UC clinical program. METHODS: Efficacy endpoints and adverse events (AEs) were evaluated by smoking status (ever smokers [current and ex-smokers] and never smokers) in the phase (P)2 induction study (baseline demographics and safety only), P3 studies (OCTAVE Induction 1&2, OCTAVE Sustain, OCTAVE Open), and P3/4b RIVETING study. The effect of smoking on periodontal treatment response: a review of clinical evidence.

BACKGROUND: Smoking has been identified as a significant risk factor for periodontal diseases and is regarded as being responsible for incomplete or delayed healing in patients following treatment. AIM AND METHOD: The aim of this conventional review was to review, collate and tabulate the relative effectiveness of treatments of chronic periodontitis in smokers, non-smokers and ex-smokers. OBSERVATIONS: The majority of clinical trials show significantly greater reductions in probing depths and bleeding on probing, and significantly greater gain of clinical attachment following non-surgical an…
