Spatial heterogeneity in the temperature-hand, foot, and mouth disease association among children: A multicounty time-series study in western China.

While meteorological and socioeconomic factors are well-documented modifiers of spatial heterogeneity in temperature-hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) associations, substantial unexplained heterogeneity remains. This study investigates underexplored environmental modifiers-including extreme temperature events (heat waves and cold spells), air pollution, and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI)-by analyzing 484,928 HFMD cases among children under six years old in western China (2013-2019) using distributed lag nonlinear models and meta-regression. We found that cold spells (accounte

Associations between extreme temperature exposure and hypertensive disorders in pregnancy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP) are a major cause of maternal mortality and morbidity. Recent studies indicated that pregnant women are the most vulnerable populations to ambient temperature influences, but it affected HDP with inconsistent conclusions. Our objective is to systematically review whether extreme temperature exposure is associated with a changed risk for HDP. METHOD: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases. We included cohort or case control studies examining the association between extreme temperature exposure before or du

[Microwave therapy of frostbite of the extremities].

In the experiment, frostbite of the hind legs in rabbits was induced for 3 hours. The extremities of 12 animals of the experimental group were influenced with UHF-field with a wavelength of 12.6 cm of nonthermal intensity (3 W) for 10 minutes one time after termination of cold influence. The extremities of 18 rabbits of the control group were warmed in a natural way. The milder course of cold trauma in animals of the experimental group manifesting itself in higher temperature of a skin of the damaged extremity, more rapid disappearance of edema and lesser spreading of cyanosis, tissue necrosis

Nationwide epidemiological study for estimating the effect of extreme outdoor temperature on occupational injuries in Italy.

BACKGROUND: Despite the relevance for occupational safety policies, the health effects of temperature on occupational injuries have been scarcely investigated. A nationwide epidemiological study was carried out to estimate the risk of injuries for workers exposed to extreme temperature and identify economic sectors and jobs most at risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The daily time series of work-related injuries in the industrial and services sector from the Italian national workers' compensation authority (INAIL) were collected for each of the 8090 Italian municipalities in the period 2006-2010. Warning: Tourniquets Risk Frostbite in Cold Weather.

We sought to better understand the frostbite risk during first-aid tourniquet use by reviewing information relevant to an association between tourniquet use and frostbite. However, there is little information concerning this subject, which may be of increasing importance because future conflicts against near-peer competitors may involve extreme cold weather environments. Historically, clinical frostbite cases with tourniquet use occurred in low frequency but in high severity when leading to limb amputation. The physiologic response of vasoconstriction to cold exposure leads to limb cooling and…

Revisiting a classical theory of sensory specificity: assessing consistency and stability of thermosensitive spots.

Thermal sensitivity is not uniform across the skin, and is particularly high in small (∼1 mm2) regions termed "thermosensitive spots." These spots are thought to reflect the anatomical location of specialized thermosensitive nerve endings from single primary afferents. Thermosensitive spots provide foundational support for "labeled line" or specificity theory of sensory perception, which states that different sensory qualities are transmitted by separate and specific neural pathways. This theory predicts a highly stable relation between repetitions of a thermal stimulus and the resulting senso

Adaptive cold-environmental strategies of Lonicera caerulea: synergistic regulation of anthocyanin and iridoid pathways in cold tolerance and fruit ripening.

Understanding how plants adapt to extreme cold and ripen fruit is a key question in plant biology. Lonicera caerulea (blue honeysuckle), a cold-tolerant berry species native to the northern temperate zone, is valued as a 'noble fruit' for its rich nutrient profile and serves as an ideal model for studies due to its unique ability to thrive in low temperatures and ripen fruit during early spring. Here, we generated a chromosome-level genome assembly for wild L. caerulea from the Changbai Mountain region. We integrated it with transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses to explore its molecular cold…

Investigation of cold adaptation mechanisms by transcriptome analysis in the liver of yellowtail kingfish (Seriola aureovittata).

Cold stress is an extreme environmental stressor that constrains the economic development of aquaculture. Yellowtail kingfish (Seriola aureovittata) is a commercially important fish species, but its molecular mechanisms in response to cold stress remain unknown. In this study, we investigated the transcriptional response of yellowtail kingfish liver to cold stress (10 °C) using RNA-sequencing analysis. We obtained 83.21 Gb of clean data from fish in the control group (0 h) and at 6, 12, and 24 h post-stimulation. A total of 2900 differentially expressed genes were identified from the compariso

The impact of humidex on other infectious diarrhea: a study of seasonal heterogeneity and lagged effects using a distributed lag non-linear model.

OBJECTIVE: Global climate changehas led to frequent extreme hot and humid events. The Humidex, as a comprehensive temperature and humidity indicator, is closely related to infectious diseases. Other infectious diarrhea is an important public health issue, but the expode-response relationship between it and Humidex, especially the seasonal effect modification and lag effect patterns, still lacks systematic research. This study aims to evaluate the impact of Humidex on the incidence of other infectious diarrhea and explore its seasonal heterogeneity and time lag effect. METHODS: Using daily OID

Disorders of temperature regulation.

A remarkably effective and efficient thermoregulatory apparatus enables humans to maintain a normal body temperature despite widely varying and changing environmental and internal thermal conditions. Nevertheless, extreme ambient cold or heat and exhaustive exercise stress can overwhelm these defenses, leading to dangerous hypothermia or hyperthermia, respectively.

Arterial thrombosis at high altitude resulting in loss of limb.

Vascular thrombosis is an uncommon but recognized peril of high altitude travel. Traditionally, this has been associated with prolonged exposure to extreme altitudes where dehydration, hemoconcentration, cold, use of constrictive clothing, and enforced stasis due to severe weather have been named as contributing factors. It is widely hypothesized that hypoxia itself alters the coagulation cascade to create a prothrombotic milieu, though evidence thus far is limited and frequently conflicting. Case reports have described venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, cerebrovascular accidents, transien

Effects of extreme environmental conditions on the skin barrier: a pilot study from the "Under The Pole" project with spectral and biometric measurements.

INTRODUCTION: Under The Pole is an ambitious underwater exploration program in extreme environments, particularly in deep and polar regions. Diving in the cold and saline waters of the Arctic exposes the skin to intense thermal and osmotic stress, potentially altering its barrier function. This study aimed to evaluate both the acute and long-term effects of repeated cold-water diving on skin hydration and barrier integrity during a two-month Arctic expedition. METHODS: Seven healthy Caucasian male participants without facial skin lesions were monitored throughout the expedition. Skin appearan

Temperature-dependent skin disorders.

The skin is important in preserving homeostasis between man and his environment. One main role of the skin is in thermoregulation, where cutaneous blood flow, and hence skin temperature, vary widely in order to help preserve core body temperature. Under extreme conditions, frostbite or burns may occur. Prolonged exposure to moderate degrees of heat or cold can result in erythema ab igne and chilblains. Temperature plays a direct role in some of the physical urticarias and is one of several important pathogenic factors in conditions such as Raynaud's syndrome, cold panniculitis, and cryoglobuli

Nerve conduction velocity in human limbs with late sequelae after local cold injury.

Cold-induced neuropathy may play a dominant role in the long-term sequelae with cold sensitivity after local cold injuries (LCIs). Somatosensory functions were assessed and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) and motor distal delay (MDD) were measured in the limbs of 31 Norwegian former soldiers with persistent cold intolerance 3-4 years after the primary LCI. NCV measurements were performed in 24 lower and 16 upper extremities. NCV was related to degree of overall subjective complaints quantified by means of a visual analogue scale (VAS). Motor (MNCV) and sensory conduction velocity (SNCV) in the

Cold stress causes liver damage by inducing ferroptosis through the p38 MAPK/Drp1 pathway.

Acute extreme cold exposure impairs human health and even causes hypothermia which threatens human life. Liver, as a hub in metabolism and thermogenesis, is vital for cold acclimatization. Although accumulating evidence has suggested that cold exposure can cause liver damage, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigated the role and underlying mechanisms of ferroptosis in cold stress-induced liver damage. To evaluate the role of ferroptosis in cold stress-induced liver damage, rats were pretreated with ferroptosis inhibitor liproxstatin-1 (Lip-1) before exposed t…
