Causes for removal of the eye: a study of 890 eyes.

This study is a review of 890 cases of eye enucleations performed over a period of 22 years. The major cause for enucleations was trauma, accounting for 39.7% of the eyes enucleated. Chronic inflammatory diseases accounted for 22.1%, glaucoma for 11.5% and tumours for 9.2% in this group. Retinal diseases were responsible for 5.5% of the eyes; vascular occlusion for 5%; and miscellaneous causes for the remaining 7%. Injuries were everyday tools and small flying missiles caused most of the trauma. Previously planned surgical operations accounted for 15% of the enucleations. Forty-eight of these …

Eyelash growth after enucleation and evisceration surgery.

Acquired eyelash hypertrichosis is associated with medications, systemic diseases, and ocular inflammation. The authors present a study showing that eyelash length is significantly longer following enucleation and evisceration surgery compared with the contralateral side. This may be related to factors involved in postoperative conjunctival and orbital inflammation and healing.

Update on enucleation and evisceration surgery.

The best operative results with fewest complications after enucleation surgery can be achieved by following basic principles, some of which are those of conservative tissue excision, using spherical implants placed behind Tenon's capsule into the muscle cone and avoiding surgical techniques that overlap the extraocular muscles (especially the superior rectus) over the front of the implant. The presence of an intraocular tumor demands that an enucleation be done. When the possible development of sympathetic ophthalmia is not present, the surgeon should consider doing an evisceration because of

Retinoblastoma: the accuracy of clinical diagnosis in children treated by enucleation.

We correlated the pathologic diagnosis with the preoperative clinical diagnosis of retinoblastoma in children treated by enucleation within the United States and Canada between the years 1974 and 1980. In order to avoid inappropriate selectivity and institutional bias, we studied only those cases submitted directly to the Registry of Ophthalmic Pathology in which the enucleated eyes had not been examined initially at the local hospital. Of the 56 eyes removed because of suspected retinoblastoma, 15 (26.8%) did not contain a malignant tumor. In two cases enucleation was delayed because retinobl

Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide in Blind, Painful Eyes.

PURPOSE: To determine if calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is overexpressed in blind, painful eyes. METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional randomized control study conducted at a tertiary level hospital. Eight specimens of eyes enucleated by a single surgeon were included in the study. The control group patients underwent exenteration for cutaneous malignancy without intraocular involvement, while the case group was enucleated for management of blind, painful eye. Each eye was stained using immunohistochemistry for the expression of CGRP. Expression of CGRP was examined by cou

Choroidal melanoma with pigment dispersion in vitreous and melanomalytic glaucoma.

A 39-year-old black man underwent enucleation of the left eye because of poor vision, ocular pain, and intractable glaucoma secondary to a choroidal tumor. Two diagnostic vitrectomies, performed 11 and 7 months before enucleation, had failed to disclose the proper diagnosis. Histologic diagnosis was necrotic malignant melanoma of the choroid with melanocytoma cells, extensive pigment dispersion throughout the eye, and melanomalytic glaucoma. Possible mechanisms of tumor necrosis are reviewed.

Wilbrand's knee of the primate optic chiasm is an artefact of monocular enucleation.

PURPOSE: The anterior chiasmal syndrome consists of a temporal hemianopia or complete visual field loss in one eye, plus a superior temporal hemianopia in the other eye. The superior temporal hemianopia in the other eye is thought to result from injury to Wilbrand's Knee of the optic chiasm. Wilbrand's Knee is a loop of decussating fibers which detours into the contralateral optic nerve before entering the optic tract. I studied the organization of fibers in the optic chiasm of monkeys and humans to verify the existence of Wilbrand's Knee and to elucidate further the pattern of visual field lo

Indications for Pediatric Enucleations of Non-Retinoblastoma Globes in Saudi Arabia with Clinical and Radiological Correlation To Final Histopathological Diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Enucleation is a difficult surgical decision in the ophthalmic practice. The overall commonest indications for this procedure are intraocular neoplasm (mostly retinoblastoma in children and uveal melanoma in adults), trauma, painful blind eyes, phthisis bulbi, and microphthalmos for cosmetic restoration of the orbital size. Specific indications vary according to age groups, gender, and geographical areas. In this study we aim to investigate the indications -other than retinoblastoma- for enucleation in the pediatric age group to observe the trends and significant associations of th

Clinicopathologic review of pediatric enucleations during the last 50 years.

PURPOSE: To evaluate diagnoses leading to enucleations in the pediatric age group over time. METHODS: All pathology reports of enucleation specimens at the University of California-San Francisco eye pathology laboratory from children (ages 0 to 18 years) from 1960 to 2008 were reviewed. The main outcome measures were the frequency of pediatric enucleation specimens in each diagnostic category as compared with total pathological laboratory volume over time, and the age and gender distribution of histopathological diagnostic categories over time. RESULTS: Specimens of 746 eyes from 729 pediatr

Traumatic eye injuries due to large unusual foreign bodies: a Singapore case series.

PURPOSE: Traumatic eye injuries due to large foreign bodies (FB) are rare. The visual prognosis is often poor in these cases because of severe ocular damage. Staged surgical procedures with eventual enucleation or evisceration are often indicated. METHODS: Case series. RESULTS: The authors describe two patients with eye injury due to large FB with visual acuity of no light perception at presentation. Both had initial repair of the ocular injuries and removal of the FB. One patient with an intraocular FB eventually underwent enucleation; the other, with intraorbital FB, had evisceration as a

[Ophthalmic pathology grossing: The globe].

BACKGROUND: Grossing of an enucleated eye (ocular bulb) is usually not a daily duty even in bigger departments of pathology. This can result in difficulties with precise orientation and technical performance. OBJECTIVES: The approach for grossing an enucleated eye is well described in recent monographic publications of ophthalmic pathology. Because of the rarity of these specimens, these documents are not often available, especially in the grossing lab. Further, they require a thorough preparation in advance. This article offers a summary including a tabular overview and diagrams that can be
