Evaluation of the Pathogenic Potential of Escherichia coli Strains Isolated from Eye Infections.

While primarily Gram-positive bacteria cause bacterial eye infections, several Gram-negative species also pose eye health risks. Currently, few studies have tried to understand the pathogenic mechanisms involved in E. coli eye infections. Therefore, this study aimed to establish the pathogenic potential of E. coli strains isolated from eye infections. Twenty-two strains isolated between 2005 and 2019 from patients with keratitis or conjunctivitis were included and submitted to traditional polymerase chain reactions (PCR) to define their virulence profile, phylogeny, clonal relationship, and se…

Therapeutic Effects of Lactoferrin in Ocular Diseases: From Dry Eye Disease to Infections.

Lactoferrin is a naturally occurring iron-binding glycoprotein, produced and secreted by mucosal epithelial cells and neutrophils in various mammalian species, including humans. It is typically found in fluids like saliva, milk and tears, where it reaches the maximum concentration. Thanks to its unique anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, topical application of lactoferrin plays a crucial role in the maintenance of a healthy ocular surface system. The present review aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the clinical applications of lactoferrin in ocular diseases

A cluster of deep bacterial infections following eye surgery associated with construction dust.

Three cases of serious eye infection (two endophthalmitis, one orbital cellulitis; two caused by Staphylococcus aureus, one caused by viridans streptococci) occurred shortly after surgery (two cataracts, one retinal detachment repair) within two weeks. There had been construction work adjacent to the theatres during this time, and fine dust was found on horizontal surfaces. Further surgery was cancelled, the construction work was completed and theatres were cleaned before recommencing with no further infections. Following a review of factors that may be involved in the pathogenesis of endophth

Severe Mpox Infection of the Eye and Periocular Region.

Mpox is an emerging zoonotic infection with potentially severe ocular and periocular consequences, particularly in immunocompromised patients. This report summarizes 2 cases of fulminant mpox presenting in patients with AIDS. In the first case, confluent lesions resulted in orbital compartment syndrome and total eyelid necrosis. In the second case, eyelid involvement was accompanied by corneal melt and perforation. Despite aggressive medical and surgical treatment, both patients developed permanent loss of vision and ultimately expired.

The eye as the discrete but defensible portal of coronavirus infection.

Oculo-centric factors may provide a key to understanding invasion success by SARS-CoV-2, a highly contagious, potentially lethal, virus with ocular tropism. Respiratory infection transmission via the eye and lacrimal-nasal pathway elucidated during the 1918 influenza pandemic, remains to be explored in this crisis. The eye and its adnexae represent a large surface area directly exposed to airborne viral particles and hand contact. The virus may bind to corneal and conjunctival angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors and potentially to the lipophilic periocular skin and superficial tea

[To the role of Chlamydia infection in the development of dry eye].

The study deals with the possible etiological role of Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma, and bacteroid infections in the development of chronic conjunctivitis and dry eye (DE). A hundred and fifty patients with DE and chronic conjunctivitis were examined. Conjunctival scrapes were examined by direct immunofluorescence for evidence of Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma, and bacteroid infections. DE was verified by the Schirmer test and the Norn test. Ninety-five (63.3%) persons were found to be infected. GE was diagnosed in 84 (56%) of the 150 patients. Analysis of infection rates revealed Chlam

Treatment of TRIC infection of the eye with rifampicin or chloramphenicol.

An open trial was carried out on 63 patients in London to assess the efficacy of 1% rifampicin eye ointment in comparison with 1% chloramphenicol eye ointment in the treatment of sexually transmitted TRIC infection of the eye. Patients included were selected on the basis of positive cultures for Chlamydia trachomatis. Three weeks' treatment with rifampicin eye ointment used 3 times daily was not sufficient to cure the disease, but a 6 or 7 week course gave 90% clinical and microbiological cure rate. Treatment with chloramphenicol eye ointment 3 times daily for 4 to 6 weeks failed to cure the d

[Pharmaceutical investigation of vancomycin hydrochloride eye drops and their topical application to MRSA eye infection].

Two formulations of 0.5% vancomycin hydrochloride (VM) eye drops (VM-B and VM-C eye drops) were prepared by dissolving commercial VM powder for injection with preserved water B (PWB) containing phosphate buffer and preserved water C (PWC) containing only antimicrobial preservative, respectively. The VM-B eye drops have neutral pH (about 6.3), and the VM-C eye drops acidic pH of about 3.5. The pharmaceutical examination of these eye drops was performed regarding its clinical application to MRSA eye infection. In an irritability test using a rabbit's eye, the average number of winks after instil

Infective pulmonary diseases and the eye: a narrative review.

Several infectious pulmonary diseases affect the eye. An understanding of the association between infectious pulmonary and ocular diseases is pivotal to their successful management. We aimed to review the infections affecting both the lungs and the eye. The electronic database PubMed and the search engine Google Scholar were searched for relevant articles. Ocular tuberculosis (TB), usually not associated with clinical evidence of pulmonary TB, can affect almost all the ocular structures. Confirmation of the diagnosis of ocular TB requires demonstration of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in ocular f
