INTRODUCTION: Military Combat Eye Protection (CEP) is a form of personal protective equipment designed to protect the eyes and surrounding structures. A review of 67 586 US and UK personnel wounded during Iraq and Afghanistan demonstrated that eye injuries were present in 8% of survivors or those who died of wounds. CEP was first introduced to UK military personnel in Iraq during 2006 and has been shown to reduce both the incidence and severity of eye injury, with the current CEP issued as part of the VIRTUS body armour and load carriage system.

INTRODUCTION: Welding poses significant ocular hazards in Nepal's industrial settings; however, data on trauma prevalence and protective barriers remain limited. This study assessed the burden of ocular trauma, personal protective equipment (PPE) practices, and associated risk factors among welders in Hetauda, Nepal.

METHODS: National survey mailed to interventional radiologists, conducted anonymously in November 1991. We observed locomotion and motion sickness in 10 normal adults wearing reversing goggles while moving outdoors. Horizontal reversal of the visual field produced moderate to severe ataxia and motion sickness in all subjects except one. There was marked variability in the sensitivity among different subjects. In contrast, vertical reversal produced no symptoms. Confusion of information relation to spatial orientation possibly caused both the motion sickness and abnormal locomotion. Horizontal reversal of visual information produces disorientation because visual information is equal in importance

Ocular injuries suffered by 38 hockey players during a three-year period were studied. The severity of the injuries required hospitalization for 16 of the patients. Twelve players require follow-up care for possible late complications from the following conditions: angle recession (seven cases), subluxated lens (three cases), traumatic cataract (three cases), detachment of the retina (two cases), and enucleation (one case). The use of a full-face protective mask affixed to an adequate helmet is recommended for all hockey players.

A case of ocular blunt trauma is described in which a 17 year old male ice hockey player collided with an opponent during a game. The opponent's stick travelled under the patient's half face visor and struck his left eye causing hyphema, angle recession, lens subluxation, and choroidal rupture over the macula, permanently reducing his vision to counting fingers. Sequelae of ocular blunt trauma are discussed along with methods of injury prevention by addressing players' behaviour and safety equipment. This injury is unlikely to have occurred with properly used full face protection.
