Paget disease of the calvaria and facial bones with an osteosarcoma of the maxilla: CT and MR findings.

The CT and magnetic resonance (MR) findings of Paget disease of the calvaria and facial bones are described and compared with one another. The sites of dense, woven bone, myeloid marrow, and background Paget matrix can be clearly identified. A rare case of Paget sarcoma (osteogenic sarcoma) of the facial bones is also presented. The distinction between this sarcoma and the Paget bone was clearer on CT than on MR. This presumably is because the bone is directly seen on CT and only indirectly imaged on MR.

Facial Cellulitis and Skin Abscess: A Case of a Simple Bone Cyst in the Mandibular Bone.

Cellulitis, abscess, or both are among the most common skin and soft tissue infections. Typically, cellulitis arises due to bacterial penetration through breaches in the skin's protective barrier. However, in cases of facial cellulitis, it is necessary to consider not only the breakdown of the skin barrier but also to differentiate odontogenic cellulitis. A prompt and accurate diagnosis of facial infections stemming from dental issues, coupled with the administration of antibiotics and dental interventions, played a crucial role in resolving this condition. Odontogenic cellulitis often develop

Lethal syndrome of slender bones, intrauterine fractures, characteristics facial appearance, and cataracts, resembling Hallermann-Streiff syndrome in two sibs.

We report on a family in which 1 males infant who died neonatally and 1 female fetus at 29 weeks of gestation had an identical condition resembling Hallermann-Streiff syndrome. The long bones were slender with a few fractures, the skull was underossified, and the face was characteristic of Hallermann-Streiff syndrome. Bilateral cataracts were identified in the male. We regard the condition in this family as a severe form of Hallermann-Streiff syndrome, which appears to have been lethal, at least in the liveborn male. This syndrome is usually sporadic. Recurrence in sibs suggests the possibilit

[Effects of trauma to the facial bones on the anterior shelf of the base of the skull (author's transl)].

The different types of fractures of the upper jaw and facial bones and their extension to the anterior wall of the frontal sinus are discussed. Possible effects on the bony floor of the anterior shelf of the base of the skull and subjacent meninges are outlined. These injuries are then reviewed as part of the larger picture of lesions of the middle third of the craniofacial region. Several types can be distinguished:I.--Lesions in the anterior wall of the frontal sinus only, II.--Lesions affecting the base of the facial bones, III.--Lesions in the frontal vault radiating to the base, IV.--Dire…

Influence of the facial nerve on facial bone growth and development in patients with congenital or acquired facial paralysis during childhood: A tomographic study.

Facial growth results from a complex combination of genetic and acquired factors. A number of studies indicate that the quality of mechanical stimuli generated during functional activities could significantly influence craniofacial morphology. We aimed to investigate whether congenital or acquired facial paralysis affects facial growth, given that muscular function may be impaired in patients with facial movement loss. To this end, facial computed tomography (CT) scans of 17 patients diagnosed with congenital or acquired facial paralysis during childhood from the Facial Nerve outpatient clinic

[Computed tomographic criteria for the diagnosis of variable manifestations of Paget's disease in the cerebral cranium and facial bones].

OBJECTIVE: to optimize the diagnosis of different stages of Paget's disease, by determining the extent of bone structural lesions in the cerebral and visceral cranium on the basis of computed tomography data. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Computed tomographic data were assessed by keeping in mind the structure, density, outlines, shadow shapes of the described tumor-like disease and the state of involved bone structures. Twelve patients with histologically verified Paget's disease were examined. RESULTS: The findings allowed the high informative value of computed tomography in diagnosing different s

The effect of bone displacement operations on facial soft tissues.

A novel biomechanical model for face soft tissue (skin, mucosa, and muscles) is introduced to investigate the effect of mandible and chin bone displacement on the overall appearance of the patient's face. Nonlinear FE analysis is applied to the model and the results obtained are used to help surgeons to decide the amount of displacement required.

Dental and facial bone abnormalities in pyknodysostosis: CT findings.

Pyknodysostosis is an autosomal-recessive disorder of osteoclast dysfunction causing osteosclerosis, with associated maxillofacial anomalies. Multidetector CT with multiplanar and 3D reconstruction illustrated the pathologic findings in this case. Abnormalities included multiple retained deciduous teeth, unerupted teeth with associated follicles, an irregularly expanded alveolus and body of the mandible, and an obtuse mandibular angle. Volume-rendered imaging better delineated the irregular dentition, with crowding and retention of deciduous teeth.

Actinomycosis of the temporal bone with labyrinthine and facial nerve involvement.

OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate the clinical, radiologic, and pathologic findings of actinomycosis of the temporal bone. STUDY DESIGN: Case report and literature review. METHODS: Analysis of a case through medical records and literature review. RESULTS: Actinomycosis is a rare cause of subacute-chronic suppurative infection of the temporal bone. We present an 11-year-old male with a history of ciliary dyskinesia presenting with a 6-week history of right-sided otorrhea, otalgia, and a 1-week history of progressive facial weakness. Final histopathology revealed a diagnosis of actinomycosis. A revi

[Interventions for improving the facial profile with osteoinductive bone implants].

Osteoinductive bone allografts (autolyzed, antigen-extracted, allogeneic bone; AAA bone) were implanted in 207 cases. The patients had plastic surgery procedures to improve their profiles and were followed up for a maximum of 72 months. Twenty-two patients had an asymmetric mandible corrected with AAA bone chips. In 14 cases AAA bone implants were used for genioplasties. Forehead defects were reconstructed in 20 patients using AAA bone. Hypoplasia of the midface was corrected in 88 cases by augmentations with AAA bone chips or powder. A total of 63 patients underwent rhinoplasties in which AAA

[Facial bone fracture--statistical analysis and clinical aspects].

We experienced 102 cases of facial bone fracture during 16 months of 1986 to 1987. These cases were analyzed statistically concerning causes, age and locations of the fracture. These fractures have increased rapidly in number. The causes were classified into three types; occurrence during sport, traffic accident and fighting, which were equal in number. There were 85% males and 15% females in the patient cohort, which were concentrated at the ages of 10-20 years. A large part of the fractures was mostly consisted of maxillo-facial components (95%). These trends were similar to the previous rep

Transmastoid decompression of the facial nerve in temporal bone fracture.

Among 41 cases of facial palsy caused by closed heart injury, temporal bone fractures were surgically confirmed in 36 cases, of which there were two mixed fractures and 34 longitudinal fractures. The fracture involved the geniculate ganglion area in 20 cases (55%). In 15 cases, decompression of the facial nerve was carried out using the transmastoid supralabyrinthine approach with disarticulation of the incus; in only five cases was the middle fossa approach used. The technique avoids the craniotomy for the middle fossa approach and is a reliable method of treatment in the majority of patients

Modern trends in cryosurgery of bone in the maxillo-facial region.

There have been described a variety of methods of freezing bone in the maxillo-facial region with the object of eradicating neoplastic or other abnormal cellular elements, without the need for radical excision. Thermography allows analysis of penetration so that a suitable method can be chosen for a particular clinical situation. Sequestration and pathological fracture can occur as complications but may be avoided by attention to technique.
