Melanocytic lesions of the face: diagnostic pitfalls.

The pathologist often has a difficult task in evaluating melanocytic lesions. For lesions involving the face the consequences of misdiagnosis are compounded for both cosmetic and therapeutic reasons. In this article, the pathological features of common and uncommon benign and malignant melanocytic lesions are reviewed and pitfalls in their diagnosis are highlighted. Benign lesions resembling melanomas include regenerating naevus, "irritated" naevus, combined naevus, "ancient naevus", Spitz naevus, dysplastic naevus, halo naevus, variants of blue naevi, balloon and clear cell naevi, neurotised

Mask-induced Koebner phenomenon and its clinical phenotypes: A multicenter, real-life study focusing on 873 dermatological consultations during COVID-19 pandemics.

During COVID-19 pandemic, wearing masks for prevention became mandatory but evidence suggest that is also detrimental for skin. Although facial dermatoses due to masks increase in both healthcare workers and general population, a pathogenetic hypothesis remains still elusive. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of dermatological consultations due to Koebner triggered dermatoses In this prospective, multicenter, real life study carried out in Italy from March 11th to December 11th 2020 during COVID-19 pandemics, dermatological consultations (in-person and telemedicine) to study the prevalence o…

Sensitive skin.

Sensitive skin is a clinical condition defined by the self-reported facial presence of different sensory perceptions, including tightness, stinging, burning, tingling, pain and pruritus. Sensitive skin may occur in individuals with normal skin, with skin barrier disturbance, or as a part of the symptoms associated with facial dermatoses such as rosacea, atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Although experimental studies are still pending, the symptoms of sensitive skin suggest the involvement of cutaneous nerve fibres and neuronal, as well as epidermal, thermochannels. Many individuals with sensiti…

Clinical and Dermoscopic Characteristics of Facial Hyperpigmentation Disorders in Skin of Color.

Facial hyperpigmentation disorders (FHD) are common in dermatology, particularly in people with skin of color (SOC). They include melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and less frequent conditions such as exogenous ochronosis, lichen planus pigmentosus, Riehl's melanosis, acanthosis nigricans, seborrheic melanosis, pigmentary demarcation lines, drug-induced pigmentation, and nevus of Ota, among others. These conditions may significantly affect quality of life. They can present similar clinical and dermoscopic features, making diagnosis challenging. A thorough medical history, physical

[Idiopathic facial aseptic granuloma: A case report].

Idiopathic facial aseptic granuloma is a childhood condition characterized by asymptomatic erythematous-violaceous nodules, often confused with abscesses. Its pathogenesis is unknown, but some authors have postulated its relationship with infantile rosacea. We present a case of a patient with a clinical diagnosis of idiopathic facial aseptic granuloma, with ocular involvement and a good response to oral metronidazole treatment.

The Role of the Skin Barrier in Periorificial Dermatitis.

Periorificial dermatitis, mostly known as perioral dermatitis, is a benign inflammatory facial dermatosis which can be a severe burden and even disfiguring and psychologically disturbing. The disease still presents a challenge for physicians when it comes to etiology and appropriate therapy. Although a variety of extrinsic and intrinsic factors have been proposed as etiopathogenetic factors, none of these fully explain complex pathogenesis of the disease. There is more evidence that supports beliefs that the epidermal barrier dysfunction is an underlying main pathogenic factor that contributes
