Image Captioning with Object Detection and Facial Expression Recognition for Smart Industry.

This paper presents a new image captioning system which contains facial expression recognition as a way to provide better emotional and contextual comprehension of the captions generated. A combination of affective cues and visual features is made, which enables semantically full and emotionally conscious descriptions. Experiments were carried out on two created datasets, FlickrFace11k and COCOFace15k, with standard benchmarks such as BLEU, METEOR, ROUGE-L, CIDEr, and SPICE to analyze their effectiveness. The suggested model produced better results in all metrics as compared to baselines, like

Deficits of Facial Emotion Recognition in Elderly Individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment.

INTRODUCTION: The study of facial emotion recognition is under-explored in subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). We investigated whether deficits in facial emotion recognition are present in patients with MCI. We also analyzed the relationship between facial emotion recognition and different domains of cognitive function. METHODS: This study included 300 participants aged 60 years or older with cognitive decline. We evaluated 181 MCI and 119 non-MCI subjects using the Seoul Neuropsychological Screening Battery-Core (SNSB-C) and facial emotion recognition task using six facial express

Reliability and validity of facial expression recognition in the screening of generalized anxiety disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety disorder is one of the most prevalent mental disorders in China. However, there are obvious subjective factors in the current assessment of anxiety disorders, which may lead to certain diagnostic errors. The identification and diagnosis of anxiety disorders can be further improved if objective biological indicators are added in the assessment process. The current research validates facial expression recognition as a screening tool to assist in detecting generalized anxiety disorder. METHODS: Based on the International Affective Picture System, we constructed an aided dia

Effects of facial biofeedback on hypomimia, emotion recognition, and affect in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Facial expressions are a core component of emotions and nonverbal social communication. Therefore, hypomimia as secondary symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) has adverse effects like social impairment, stigmatization, under-diagnosis and under-treatment of depression, and a generally lower quality of life. Beside unspecific dopaminergic treatment, specific treatment options for hypomimia in PD are rarely investigated. This quasi-randomized controlled trial evaluated the short-term effects of facial electromyogram (EMG) based biofeedback to enhance facial expression and emotion reco

Facial emotion recognition and schizotypal traits: A systematic review of behavioural studies.

AIM: Previous research has indicated that individuals expressing high schizotypal traits and patients with Schizotypal Personality Disorder (SPD), show deficits in facial emotion recognition, compared to low schizotypal or control groups. On the other hand, non-significant findings also exist and the association of facial emotion recognition deficits with the different schizotypal dimensions is not well defined, thus limiting any conclusive outcomes. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to further clarify this relationship. METHODS: PsychInfo, Web of Science, Scopus and PubMed wer

Difficulties in facial emotion recognition: taking psychopathic and alexithymic traits into account.

BACKGROUND: Alexithymic and psychopathic traits are closely associated, but distinct constructs. Both have been associated with facial emotion processing deficits reflecting empathy deficits, however the underlying mechanism contributing to these deficits is not well-understood. METHODS: This study investigated facial emotion recognition performance in a non-clinical sample (N = 110) including both male and female participants, with varying levels of psychopathic and alexithymic traits. Facial emotion recognition was assessed using a computerized task, that presented different expressions dep

Facial emotion recognition in panic disorder: a mini-review of behavioural studies.

BACKGROUND: Panic Disorder (PD) is characterized by unexpected and repeated moments of intense fear or anxiety, which manifest themselves through strong cognitive and behavioural symptoms. However, a clear picture of how impairments in recognition and processing of facial emotions affect the everyday life of PD patients has yet to be delineated. This review attempts to provide an overview of behavioural studies of emotion detection from facial stimuli in PD patients. METHODS: A bibliographic research on PubMed of all studies investigating the recognition and processing of facial emotion stimu

Apathy Associated With Impaired Recognition of Happy Facial Expressions in Huntington's Disease.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research has demonstrated an association between emotion recognition and apathy in several neurological conditions involving fronto-striatal pathology, including Parkinson's disease and brain injury. In line with these findings, we aimed to determine whether apathetic participants with early Huntington's disease (HD) were more impaired on an emotion recognition task compared to non-apathetic participants and healthy controls. METHODS: We included 43 participants from the TRACK-HD study who reported apathy on the Problem Behaviours Assessment - short version (PBA-S), 67 pa

Transdiagnostic deviant facial recognition for implicit negative emotion in autism and schizophrenia.

Impaired facial affect recognition (FAR) is observed in schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and has been linked to amygdala and fusiform gyrus dysfunction. ASD patient's impairments seem to be more pronounced during implicit rather than explicit FAR, whereas for schizophrenia data are inconsistent. However, there are no studies comparing both patient groups in an identical design. The aim of this three-group study was to identify (i) whether FAR alterations are equally present in both groups, (ii) whether they are present rather during implicit or explicit FAR, (iii) and whether t

The impact of neuromyelitis optica on the recognition of emotional facial expressions: a preliminary report.

Although neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is classically recognized as an affectation of optic nerves and spinal cord, recent reports have shown brain atrophy and cognitive dysfunction in this condition. Importantly, emotion-related brain regions appear to be impaired in NMO. However, no studies of NMO' emotional processing have been published. The goal of the current study was to investigate facial emotion recognition in 10 patients with NMO and 10 healthy controls by controlling for relevant cognitive factors. Consistent with previous reports, NMO patients performed poorly across cognitive domains

Rett syndrome: recognition of facial expression and its relation to scanning patterns.

BACKGROUND: Rett syndrome is a severely disabling neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutations in the X-linked MECP2 gene. Very little is known about its cognitive phenotype and nothing about recognition of emotional expression, a key factor for social interaction and communication. Using eye tracking technology, a technique uniquely suited for studying cognition in this disorder, we examined this ability here. METHODS: Rett syndrome female patients (n = 37; 2-31 years) and a typically developing age- and gender-matched comparison group (n =34; 2-30 years) were assessed on recognition of t

Facial affect recognition in symptomatically remitted patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (BD) have consistently been associated with deficits in facial affect recognition (FAR). These impairments have been related to various aspects of social competence and functioning and are relatively stable over time. However, individuals in remission may outperform patients experiencing an acute phase of the disorders. The present study directly contrasted FAR in symptomatically remitted patients with schizophrenia or BD and healthy volunteers and investigated its relationship with patients' outcomes. Compared to healthy control subjects, schizophrenia

Relative preservation of the recognition of positive facial expression "happiness" in Alzheimer disease.

BACKGROUND: Positivity recognition bias has been reported for facial expression as well as memory and visual stimuli in aged individuals, whereas emotional facial recognition in Alzheimer disease (AD) patients is controversial, with possible involvement of confounding factors such as deficits in spatial processing of non-emotional facial features and in verbal processing to express emotions. Thus, we examined whether recognition of positive facial expressions was preserved in AD patients, by adapting a new method that eliminated the influences of these confounding factors. METHODS: Sensitivit…

Brain correlates of musical and facial emotion recognition: evidence from the dementias.

The recognition of facial expressions of emotion is impaired in semantic dementia (SD) and is associated with right-sided brain atrophy in areas known to be involved in emotion processing, notably the amygdala. Whether patients with SD also experience difficulty recognizing emotions conveyed by other media, such as music, is unclear. Prior studies have used excerpts of known music from classical or film repertoire but not unfamiliar melodies designed to convey distinct emotions. Patients with SD (n = 11), Alzheimer's disease (n = 12) and healthy control participants (n = 20) underwent tests of

Impaired conscious recognition of negative facial expressions in patients with locked-in syndrome.

The involvement of facial mimicry in different aspects of human emotional processing is widely debated. However, little is known about relationships between voluntary activation of facial musculature and conscious recognition of facial expressions. To address this issue, we assessed severely motor-disabled patients with complete paralysis of voluntary facial movements due to lesions of the ventral pons [locked-in syndrome (LIS)]. Patients were required to recognize others' facial expressions and to rate their own emotional responses to presentation of affective scenes. LIS patients were select

Fifteen inches from cancer: early recognition of facial lesions by the dentist.

Skin cancer is an increasing malignancy worldwide, and dentists are in a good position to observe their patients' faces for worrisome lesions. Most skin cancers are caused by actinic damage. The dentist must appreciate the characteristics of sun damage and be familiar with the clinical signs and symptoms of the more common premalignant and malignant facial lesions to appropriately evaluate the face. We review the features of freckles and moles, as well as those of seborrheic keratosis. Sun damage is discussed to aid in understanding the etiological role of ultraviolet exposure in the developme
