Two cases are reported, which demonstrate the contribution of angiography to the operative management of neoplastic, pathologic fractures. The degree of fracture site neovascularity was assessed by pre-operative arteriography. Selective trans-catheter gelatin-foam embolization was then employed to markedly reduce or obliterate the arterial supply to lesions shown to be richly vascular. Open reduction and internal fixation was subsequently accomplished with minimal operative hemorrhage.

We present a case of primary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of bone accompanied by osteomyelitis, which was challenging to diagnose. CT revealed no distant metastases; thus, primary bone tumour and osteomyelitis were included in the differential diagnosis. A needle biopsy of an extraosseous lesion found no malignancy, and granulation tissue with abscess formation was pathologically diagnosed. An incisional biopsy was performed to assess osteomyelitis. The content of selenium in the serum and bones was compared in persons having no neoplasms and in patients with malignant and benign bone tumors. AIMS: We aimed to find out: the typical workload for metastatic bone disease, the conventional treatment for femoral metastases and whether there is a trend for arthroplasty and endoprosthetic reconstruction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All sequential patients undergoing surgery for femoral metastatic lesions (both pathological fracture and impending pathological fracture) of any age patient were included in the multicenter snapshot audit. Data on demographics, institutions and operative procedures were recorded.
RESULTS: 24 UK Institutions were enrolled, including 7 Major Trauma Centres (MTCs).

Adamantinoma is a rare tumour of long bones that occurs most commonly in the tibia. Its pathogenesis is unknown. It is locally aggressive and recurrences are common after resection. Metastases have been reported in 10% to 20% of cases, most commonly in the lungs and rarely in the lymph nodes. We report a patient who developed a skeletal metastasis four years after resection of the primary tumour. There was no evidence of recurrence at the primary site or of secondary deposits in the lungs.

The authors review 18 patients with multiple myeloma who had bone destruction of a kind that indicated surgical therapy. In a retrospective study, the clinical usefulness of digital image intensifier radiography was analysed. It could be demonstrated that for angiographic procedures the image quality of a 1024(2) matrix is superior to a 512(2) matrix. For digital excretory urography it could be seen that in 80 to 90% the images were at least sufficient to analyse the renal pelvis. Digital image intensifier radiography of bones was diagnostically sufficient in 76% and analysis of bone architecture was possible in 85%.
