Nano-Scale Insights into Clay Minerals Regulating the Fe(II)-Catalyzed Ferrihydrite Transformation under Anoxic Conditions.

Metastable ferrihydrite nanoparticles and clay minerals always coexist as heteroaggregates in nature due to their abundance, opposite charge, and large interface energy. However, the impact of clay minerals on the transformation of ferrihydrite under anoxic conditions remains elusive. This study systematically investigated the effect of distinct clay minerals on the Fe(II)-catalyzed transformation of ferrihydrite and clarifying the underlying nanoscale mechanisms for the first time. Our results demonstrated that clay minerals could affect the production and recrystallization of labile Fe(III)

Photoinduced transformation of ferrihydrite in the presence of aqueous sulfite and its influence on the repartitioning of Cd.

The photoinduced transformation of ferrihydrite is an important process that can predict the geochemical cycle of Fe in anoxic environments as well as the fate of trace elements bonded to Fe minerals. We report that the photooxidation of sulfite by UV irradiation produces hydrated electrons (super-reductants), which significantly promote ferrihydrite reduction to Fe(II), and SO3•- (a moderate oxidant), enabling its further oxidation to more crystalline Fe(III) products. The experimental results show that the concentration of sulfite was key in influencing the rate and extent of surface-bound F

Fe(III) Mineral Encrustation Uncouples Respiration from Reproduction of the Nitrate-Reducing Fe(II)-Oxidizing Bacterium Acidovorax sp. BoFeN1.

Fe(II) can be oxidized by mixotrophic nitrate-reducing Fe(II)-oxidizing (NRFeOx) bacteria to Fe(III), leading to mineral precipitation. However, the effects of this process on the metabolism and reproductive ability of Fe(II)-oxidizing bacterial cells have not yet been quantified. In this study, we investigated the effects of Fe(II) on the mixotrophic NRFeOx bacteria Acidovorax sp. BoFeN1 by performing cell plate counts, chemical analyses, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging, live/dead fluorescence staining, and proteomic analysis. The results showed that nitrate-reducing Fe(II)-oxidizi

Iron-Catalyzed Aerobic Hydration of Glycal: A Route toward Deoxy Sugars/Glycosides.

We report an iron-catalyzed protocol for the efficient functionalization of glycals. Employing inexpensive iron(III) or iron(II) chloride as a catalyst and phenylsilane (PhSiH3) as an additive, this method enables the high-yield synthesis of 2-deoxy sugars and glycosides. A key modification of the Mukaiyama hydration reaction, this approach directly utilizes air as the oxygen source. It demonstrates robust activity across both protected and unprotected glycals, with notably excellent yields observed for ester-protected substrates. Its utility is further highlighted through coupling reactions w

Sediment-isolated Comamonas terrigena strain HJ-2: a novel nitrate-dependent ferrous-oxidizing bacterium with multifunction on pollutant transformation.

Microbially driven Fe(II) oxidation is vital for Fe-cycling processes. In the present study, a novel strain of nitrate-dependent Fe-oxidizing bacteria (FOB) was isolated from the riparian zone sediment of the Hanjiang River, China. It was identified as Comamonas terrigena strain HJ-2. The strain HJ-2 oxidized 2.80 mmol l-1 Fe(II) within 144 h to form Fe(III)/Fe(II) complex on the cell surface using 1.63 mmol l-1 nitrate as an electron acceptor. The formed nitrite from nitrate reduction chemically oxidized Fe(II). Surprisingly, this strain also reduced nitrilotriacetic iron to form 0.5 mmol l-1

Strengthening Fe(II)/Fe(III) Dynamic Cycling by Surface Sulfation to Achieve Efficient Electrochemical Uranium Extraction at Ultralow Cell Voltage.

Electrochemically mediated Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox-coupled uranium extraction can efficiently reduce the cell voltage of electrochemical uranium extraction (EUE). How to regulate the surface structure to enhance the uranium acyl ion adsorption capacity and strengthen the Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycle process is crucial for EUE. In this work, we developed surface sulfated nanoreduced iron (S-NRI) for EUE and exhibited improved properties for EUE at an ultralow cell voltage (-0.1 V). Compared with a nanoreduced iron (NRI) adsorbent, S-NRI displayed faster electrochemical extraction kinetics properties

Microbe interactions drive the formation of floating iron films in circumneutral wetlands.

Floating iron (Fe) films are widely found in wetlands that can form oxic-anoxic boundaries under circumneutral conditions. These films play a crucial role in the redox transformations and bioavailability of nutrients and trace metals. Current studies mainly focus on chemical oxidation during Fe film formation under circumneutral conditions. The functional microorganisms and associated microbial processes involved in Fe film formation have yet to be investigated in detail. Here, we investigated the microbial communities and involved microbial processes for the formation of floating Fe films in

Novel calcium hypochlorite/ferrous iron as an ultrafiltration membrane pretreatment process for purifying algae-laden water.

Algal fouling has become one of the most critical factors hindering the large-scale development of membrane processes in algae-laden water treatment. Herein, novel calcium hypochlorite (Ca(ClO)2)/ferrous iron (Fe(II)) process was proposed as an ultrafiltration (UF) membrane pretreatment technology, and its effects on membrane fouling and water properties were systematically studied. Results showed that the terminal specific fluxes were significantly elevated to 0.925 and 0.933, with the maximum removal ratios of reversible resistance reaching 99.65% and 96.99% for algae-laden water and extrace

Critical Functions of Soil Components for In Situ Persulfate Oxidation of Sulfamethoxazole: Inherent Fe(II) Minerals-Coordinated Nonradical Pathway.

Naturally occurring iron (Fe) minerals have been proved to activate persulfate (PS) to generate reactive species, but the role of soil-inherent Fe minerals in activating PS as well as the underlying mechanisms remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation by PS in two Fe-rich soils and one Fe-poor soil. Unlike with the radical-dominant oxidation processes in Fe-poor soil, PS was effectively activated through nonradical pathways (i.e., surface electron-transfer) in Fe-rich soils, accounting for 68.4%-85.5% of SMX degradation. The nonradical mechanism was ev

Strategies for optimizing biovivianite production using dissimilatory Fe(III)-reducing bacteria.

Vivianite (Fe3(PO4)2·8H2O), a sink for phosphorus, is a key mineralization product formed during the microbial reduction of phosphate-containing Fe(III) minerals in natural systems, and also in wastewater treatment where Fe(III)-minerals are used to remove phosphate. As biovivianite is a potentially useful Fe and P fertiliser, there is much interest in harnessing microbial biovivianite synthesis for circular economy applications. In this study, we investigated the factors that influence the formation of microbially-synthesized vivianite (biovivianite) under laboratory batch systems including t

Ultrafast Spectroscopy of Fe(II) Complexes Designed for Solar-Energy Conversion: Current Status and Open Questions.

One major challenge of future sustainable photochemistry is to replace precious and rare transition metals in applications such as energy conversion or electroluminescence by earth-abundant, cheap, and recyclable materials. This involves using coordination complexes of first row transition metals such as Cu, Cr, or Mn. In the case of iron, which is attractive due to its natural abundance, fundamental limitations imposed by the small ligand field splitting energy have recently been overcome. In this review article, we briefly summarize the present knowledge and understanding of the structure-pr

Oxidation of bioreduced iron-bearing clay mineral triggers arsenic immobilization.

Iron-bearing clay minerals and arsenic commonly coexist in soils and sediments. Redox oscillation from anoxic to oxic conditions can result in structural Fe(II) oxidation in clay minerals. However, the role of structural Fe(II) oxidation in clay minerals on arsenic immobilization is still unclear. In this study, we found that oxidation of structural Fe(II) in bioreduced clay mineral nontronite (NAu-2) triggered As(III) adsorption onto NAu-2. As(III) was adsorbed onto NAu-2 through ligand exchange with hydroxyl groups which were generated by the oxidation of structural Fe(II) in NAu-2. In addit

Effects of phosphate, silicate, humic acid, and calcium on the release of As(V) co-precipitated with Fe(III) and Fe(II) during aging.

The effects of phosphate (P), silicate (Si), humic acid (HA), and calcium (Ca) on the release of As(V) co-precipitated with Fe(III) and Fe(II) during aging were investigated. As(V) in synthetic groundwater could be efficiently removed by both Fe(III) and Fe(II) processes. The addition of P remarkably decreased As(V) removal efficiency while no obvious release of As(V) during aging was observed. Si and HA reduced As(V) removal to a less extent than P but caused notable As(V) release during aging. FTIR spectra and particle size of the precipitates before and after aging indicated that As(V) rele

Effect of Phosphate and Ferritin Subunit Composition on the Kinetics, Structure, and Reactivity of the Iron Core in Human Homo- and Heteropolymer Ferritins.

Ferritins are highly conserved supramolecular protein nanostructures that play a key role in iron homeostasis. Thousands of iron atoms can be stored inside their hollow cavity as a hydrated ferric oxyhydroxide mineral. Although phosphate associates with the ferritin iron nanoparticles, the effect of physiological concentrations on the kinetics, structure, and reactivity of ferritin iron cores has not yet been explored. Here, the iron loading and mobilization kinetics were studied in the presence of 1-10 mM phosphate using homopolymer and heteropolymer ferritins having different H to L subunit

Dimerization of [FeIII(bpy)3]3+ in Aqueous Solutions: Elucidating a Mechanism Based on Historical Proposals, Electrochemical Data, and Computational Free Energy Analysis.

Iron(II) tris-bipyridine, [FeII(bpy)3]2+, is a historically significant organometallic coordination complex with attractive redox and photophysical properties. With respect to energy storage, it is a low-cost, high-redox potential complex and thus attractive for use as a catholyte in aqueous redox flow batteries. Despite these favorable characteristics, its oxidized Fe(III) form undergoes dimerization to form μ-O-[FeIII(bpy)2(H2O)]24+, leading to a dramatic ∼0.7 V decrease during battery discharge. To date, the energetics and complete mechanism of this slow, sequential electrochemical-chemical

The fate of co-existent cadmium and arsenic during Fe(II)-induced transformation of As(V)/Cd(II)-bearing ferrihydrite.

Ubiquitous co-existence of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in smelting operations and mine drainage presents a major challenge to the environment. Fe(II)-induced ferrihydrite transformation into secondary, more crystalline minerals often controls the geochemical behavior of associated contaminants including arsenate (As(V)) and Cd(II) in natural and contaminated environments. However, the fate of co-existent As(V) and Cd(II) and the underlying mechanism during this transformation process remain unclear. In this contribution, ferrihydrite containing co-precipitated Cd(II) and As(V) with Fe(II) un

Synthesis of FeIII and FeIV Cyanide Complexes Using Hypervalent Iodine Reagents as Cyano-Transfer One-Electron Oxidants.

We disclose a new reactivity mode for electrophilic cyano λ3 -iodanes as group transfer one-electron oxidants to synthesize FeIII and FeIV cyanide complexes. The inherent thermal instability of high-valent FeIV compounds without π-donor ligands (such as oxido (O2- ), imido (RN2- ) or nitrido (N3- )) makes their isolation and structural characterization a very challenging task. We report the synthesis of an FeIV cyanide complex [(N3 N')FeCN] (4) by two consecutive single electron transfer (SET) processes from FeII precursor [(N3 N')FeLi(THF)] (1) with cyanobenziodoxolone (CBX). The FeIV complex

Persistent free radicals in biochar enhance superoxide-mediated Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling and the efficacy of CaO2 Fenton-like treatment.

Superoxide radicals (O2•-) produced by the reaction of Fe(III) with H2O2 can regenerate Fe(II) in Fenton-like reactions, and conditions that facilitate this function enhance Fenton treatment. Here, we developed an efficient Fenton-like system by using calcium peroxide/biochar (CaO2/BC) composites as oxidants and tartaric acid-chelated Fe(III) as catalysts, and tested it for enhanced O2•--based Fe(II) regeneration and faster sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. SMX degradation rates and peroxide utilization efficiencies were significantly higher with CaO2/BC than those with CaO2 or H2O2 lacking

Novel core-shell sulfidated nano-Fe(0) particles for chromate sequestration: Promoted electron transfer and Fe(II) production.

Sulfidated nanoscale valent iron in form of FeS/Fe (0) shell-core nanoparticle has the aptitude to be a promising remediation material toward reductive removal of metal oxyanions. However, disrupted contact between Fe (0) core and FeS shell by thick iron oxides limited its reactivity improvement, and its mechanism of electron transfer remains unveiled. In this study, a novel sulfidated nZVI core-shell particles (FeS/Fe (0)) was fabricated via a modified post sulfidation approach to achieve a more uniform coverage of FeS for aqueous Cr(VI) sequestration. SEM and STEM tests confirmed the formati
