BACKGROUND: The last 3 syphilis epidemics in the United States peaked after 5 to 6 years, but rates have now increased for 8 years. We questioned whether persons with multiple syphilis diagnoses (repeaters) are fueling the epidemic.
METHODS: The Florida Department of Health database of all syphilis cases reported between 2000 and 2008 was used to examine demographics and disease presentation of repeaters and nonrepeaters using bivariate and multivariate analyses.

Understanding the transmission patterns of West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis viruses (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, WNV and SLEV) could result in an increased ability to predict transmission risk to humans. The Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services (HRS) has confirmed five human cases of eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in elderly residents of Bradford, Duval, and Washington counties in northern Florida. Dates of illness onset were in mid-June and early July. A total of 92 patients underwent continent urinary diversion with an extended, detubularized right colonic segment as the urinary reservoir and the distal ileum as a continent catheterizable efferent system. In this series 65 patients were followed for 6 to 46 months (average 17 months). Lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy have changed the standard of care for patients with malignant melanoma, by providing a less morbid procedure to obtain the nodal staging information that is critical for therapeutic decisions. Detailed examination of the SLN identifies patients who have an increased risk for recurrence and death. The distribution of trace metals based on surface sediments collected at 40 stations across Florida Bay was done in June, November and February 2000-2001. Concentrations of Sc, V, Ba, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Pb, Mn, Ni, Zn, Al and Mg were determined by ICP-MS, and the total Fe was determined by spectrophotometry.
