Topical corticosteroids are effective anti-inflammatory drugs in the treatment of anterior uveitis. The intraocular efficacy of topical corticosteroids mostly depends on their intraocular permeability through the cornea. This paper reports the case of a 79-year-old aphakic male who presented on an emergency basis with a red, swollen right eye. Following examination, a preliminary diagnosis of chemical burn was made complicated by an intermittent bilateral lagophthalmos. The causative mechanisms, pathophysiology and treatment alternatives for chemical injuries of the eye are discussed.

In our practice, blepharitis is one of the more common eyelid abnormalities and one of the most difficult to treat. We introduce a new treatment that we have found to be helpful. A prospective study was devised to test its efficacy using 20 patients distributed randomly into three different treatment protocols. Our new protocol, using lyophilized collagen pads as adjunctive treatment, significantly improved results compared with controls. We had a 79% improvement in symptomatology and a 78% improvement in objective findings.

BACKGROUND: Thygeson's superficial punctate keratitis (TSPK) is a chronic disease with exacerbations and remissions over years to decades. Hallmarks of the disease include multiple, whitish-gray, intraepithelial corneal lesions with minimal or no conjunctival involvement. Although its exact etiology is controversial, TSPK has a genetic association with HLA-DR3, an antigen associated with immunogenic responses. Treatment of the disease varies depending on severity and can consist of artificial tears, corticosteroids, topical cyclosporine, or soft contact lenses.

Over a period of approximately 7 months, multiple subepithelial spots were noted in one or both corneas of some patients examined 2 to 6 months after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK).
