Foot kinematics and kinetics data for different static foot posture collected using a multi-segment foot model.

This dataset presents human foot joints kinematics and kinetics data during walking, classified by static foot posture, filling a gap in existing lower limb databases that lack data on foot joints beyond the ankle or on static posture data, despite its link to foot and lower limb pathologies. Kinematics were recorded using a three-dimensional mocap system, and kinetics through a pressure platform, employing a multi-segment foot model including the ankle, midtarsal and first metatarsophalangeal joint. The dataset contains 350 recordings of right foot joint angles and moments and contact pressur…

Plantar Intrinsic Foot Muscle Activity Across the Foot Posture Spectrum When Walking in Nontextured and Textured Foot Orthoses.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the magnitude differences of 4 plantar intrinsic foot muscles (PIFMs) across the foot posture spectrum during gait, and to investigate activation differences when adding cutaneous mechanoreceptor stimulation within foot orthosis design. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. SETTING: University's biomechanics research laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-two healthy young adults (27 ± 5.2 years; 18 men, 14 women; 175.5 ± 10.4 cm; 80.2 ± 18.7 kg) participated in this study. Anatomical foot posture variance of participants was characterized from highly pronated to highly supin…

Cortical (Spastic) Isolated Unilateral Foot Drop: The Foot Knob Area.

Foot drop is a condition characterized by impairment of the ability to dorsiflex the foot at the ankle joint. We aim to review the literature and report a case of isolated unilateral foot drop of central causes. A 59-year-old male previously healthy presenting with a right foot drop was admitted. Severe weakness of ankle dorsiflexion with intact plantar flexion was observed. Deep tendon reflexes were normal, no clonus was appreciated, and a plantar response resulted in flexion of all toes. Neuroimaging showed a lesion in the high left frontal lobe, centered along the medial aspect of the prece…

Does Offloading with Felt Foot Plates Heal Diabetic Foot Ulcers?

OBJECTIVE: To determine (1) if offloading with a felt foot plate heals a diabetic foot ulcer, (2) the rate of healing with the felt foot plate, and (3) the impact on rate of healing from the confounding factors of patient weight and growth factors on healing times. METHODS: The researchers conducted a retrospective chart cohort review over 3 years. RESULTS: Using a multivariable linear and logistic regression model, the data showed a statistically significant reduction in the diabetic foot ulcer area over time. Confounding factors of patient weight and growth factors did not impact healing t…

Diabetic foot ulcerations: biomechanics, charcot foot, and total contact cast.

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States; approximately 6% of the US population has been diagnosed with diabetes. Fifteen percent of all people with diabetes will develop a foot ulceration, and 14% to 20% of them will require an amputation. During the past 25 years, much has been learned and written about lower extremity complications associated with diabetes. The single most significant discovery relative to diabetic foot ulceration is the role of peripheral sensory neuropathy. Once the correlation between the absence of sensation and foot breakdown was made, treatm…

Foot deformity in myotubular myopathy. Pathology of intrinsic foot musculature.

An intrinsic foot muscle biopsy specimen was taken from a patient with myotubular myopathy who underwent surgical correction for orthopedic deformity. Pathologic findings were typical of primary muscle disease. Foot deformity in myotubular myopathy may result from abnormalities of intrinsic foot muscles, as well as those of more proximal musculature.

[Ectrodactyly of the foot].

BACKGROUND: Ectrodactyly is a congenital malformation characterized by the presence of clefts in the feet accompanied by aplasia and hypoplasia of the phalanges and metatarsals. It is a rare genetic disorder with an incidence of 1:90,000-100,000 live births and it is not linked to sex. Its genetic pattern is autosomal dominant with a variable genetic penetrance. Clinical diagnosis is made at birth, however it can be prenatal through ultrasound during the first trimester. Management of ectrodactyly includes both surgical and non-surgical treatment. METHODS: We reviewed the archive of medical h

Osteonecrosis in the foot.

Osteonecrosis, also referred to as avascular necrosis, refers to the death of cells within bone caused by a lack of circulation. It has been documented in bones throughout the body. In the foot, osteonecrosis is most commonly seen in the talus, the first and second metatarsals, and the navicular. Although uncommon, osteonecrosis has been documented in almost every bone of the foot and therefore should be considered in the differential diagnosis when evaluating both adult and pediatric foot pain. Osteonecrosis is associated with many foot problems, including fractures of the talar neck and navi…

Polydactyly of the foot.

Polydactyly may be preaxial or tibial (hallux-side), postaxial or ulnar (side of the little toe) and central (middle toes). The duplication may appear at the distal and medial phalanges or at the whole digit. The metatarsal bone may be part wise or completely duplicated, the accessory toes may share only one metatarsal. Surgical intervention may be indicated in shoe problems, for esthetic reasons or, especially in duplication of the metatarsales, because of secondary deviation of the toes and therefore shoe problems or plantar callosities. Preoperative analysis including x-ray is of great impo

[The diabetic foot].

Problems of the diabetic foot are frequent. The magnitude of the clinical picture and morbidity mirrors the severity and complexity of the underlying pathobiology. The three pathogenetic mechanism involved are ischemia, neuropathy and infection. Seldom do these mechanisms work in isolation, rather most foot problems result from a complex interplay among all three. The clinical picture of the diabetic foot reaches from the neuropathic deformity with diminished or absent sensation of pain to limited gangrene or superficial ulcer. The polymicrobial infection leads to extensive tissue destruction …
