A diabetic woman with a swollen forearm.

Diabetic muscle infarction (DMI) is an unusual complication of diabetes mellitus. It is usually seen in long-standing diabetes mellitus. This article presents a case of DMI in the left forearm of a 58-year-old woman. She had a swollen forearm. The level of creatine kinase was 5930 U/L. Her condition was initially suspected for either cellulitis or venous thrombosis. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study of the forearm showed diffuse edema and abnormal signals of the left forearm. The diagnosis of DMI was made. She was treated conservatively and her symptoms resolved within a short period of…

Reconstruction of posttraumatic disorders of the forearm.

Forearm rotation is crucial for full upper extremity mobility. The two-bone unit with its proximal and distal radioulnar joints should be considered as a single bicondylar articulation. After a traumatic bony forearm injury, surgical treatment for complications, such as deformity, bone loss, or failed fracture healing is challenging because complete return of forearm rotation can be difficult to achieve. It is important to be aware of methods for assessing and managing posttraumatic forearm bony complications, including preoperative assessment and osteotomy techniques for malunited fractures. …

[Multifascicular intramedullary nailing of the forearm].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Purpose of the study was to present the advantages of intramedullary nailing of long bones for treatment of fractures of the forearm. These advantages are 1) preserving the fracture-hematoma and 2) non exposure of bone. This technique is based on the technique of bundle nailing developed by Hackethal (1959). MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a 16-year period we performed Hackethal bundle nailing in 94 patients with 159 fractures. Hackethal developed the nailing procedure named after him in 1959. The rationale of Hackethal nailing is based on elastic jamming, which can only be ach…

[Microsurgical reconstruction of the forearm tendons].

The authors analyse their clinical experience of treating 5 patients with immobilization of the hand and propose to use complex and composite vascularized grafts for the plasty of extensive defects of tendons and skin of the forearm. They consider microvascular grafting of skin flaps from the back of the foot with tendons from the extensors of the toes with their own paratenon to be an excellent material for the reconstruction of the tendons of the flexors. They advise to use the vascularized broad fascia of the hip incorporated into the lateral flap from the hip for the plasty of extensive de…

[Use of the forearm island flap].

The forearm island flap is an excellent procedure for closing all deep soft tissue defects in the hand. Good and reliable circulation results in healing without problems and elimination of infection. Reverse blood flow occurs in the radial artery and its concomitant veins. Branches of the cutaneous nerves provide sensory supply. Four cases are described.

Pattern of forearm fractures in children.

Retrospective analysis of 500 consecutive fractures of the forearm in normal children was conducted. The fracture pattern secondary to fall on the out-stretched arm in the pediatric age group is for the fracture line to progress from proximal to distal with advancing skeletal age. Fractures falling outside described norms for the age represent a different population. In the older child they are an increased indication for open reduction, and in the younger child indicate an increased possibility of child abuse. Changes in the radial shaft occurring with maturity place differing areas at risk a…

Biceps brachii and forearm muscle morphology related to forearm and hand deformities in spastic cerebral palsy.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have identified morphological alterations in spastic muscles focusing predominantly on gross motor muscles, with specific emphasis on those of the lower limbs. There is minimal information on the morphology of spastic upper limb muscles in relation to clinical deformity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the morphological parameters of the biceps brachii and forearm muscles according to the severity of forearm and wrist and finger deformities in children and adolescents with spastic cerebral palsy. METHODS: A total of 87 children and adolescent…

Forearm length - a new tool to standardize bone parameters of the forearm measured with peripheral quantitative computed tomography in individuals with disproportional growth of forearm length and body height.

AIM: To investigate the relationship of forearm length (FL) or height to bone parameters of the forearm of a normal pediatric population in comparison to individuals with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). METHODS: Data on FL, height and peripheral quantitative computed tomography measurements of the forearm were collected from participants of the DONALD study (140 males and 156 females; age 5-19 years) and from 73 patients with OI (53 males; mean age +/- SD: 11.7 +/- 3.3 years). Bone mineral content (BMC) was transformed into standard deviation score (SDS) according to height or FL. RESULTS: Hei…

Dovetailing skin incision design of radial forearm free flap for forearm wound closure and maxillofacial reconstruction.

OBJECT: This study aimed to examine the feasibility of the dovetailing skin incision design of radial forearm free flap (RFFF) for closing forearm wounds and performing maxillofacial reconstruction. METHOD: A total of 27 patients were divided into two groups. In the dovetail group (n = 16), forearm wounds were closed primarily and maxillofacial defects were reconstructed by dovetail RFFF. In the conventional group (n = 11), forearm wounds were closed by skin grafts from the abdomen or mattress suturing, and maxillofacial defects were reconstructed by conventional RFFF. Information on the heal…

Plate Osteosynthesis for Segmental Forearm Fractures: A Comparison of Outcomes in Floating Elbow and Isolated Forearm Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Segmental forearm fractures are challenging to treat due to their instability. A floating elbow, characterized by ipsilateral fractures of both the humerus and forearm, is a rare but severe injury often caused by high-energy trauma and associated with significant soft tissue damage. The objective of this study is to compare the surgical outcomes of plate osteosynthesis in segmental forearm fractures, with and without the concomitant presence of a floating elbow. METHODS: A total of 35 adult patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation for segmental forearm fractures…

Forearm muscles activity of harp players.

The practice of a musical instrument requires fine dexterity, repetitive, fast, and precise movements, as well as important efforts to set the instrument into vibration, while adopting postures often unnatural for the human body. As a result, musicians are often subject to pain and musculoskeletal disorders. In the case of plucked string instruments and especially the concert harp, the plucking force is directly related to the strings' tension. Consequently, the choice of the strings has to be made based on both, the musician feel while playing, and the musculoskeletal consequences. This paper
