Inferior scapula avulsion fracture: an unusual presentation of winged scapula.

Inferior scapula avulsion fractures are rare injuries, with few cases reported and only a small number managed operatively discussed in the literature. We report the case of a man in his 40s who fell from a height and presented with right-sided scapular winging and point tenderness at the inferior pole of his right scapula with no neurological deficit. Radiographs and CT diagnosed avulsion fracture of the inferior scapula. The patient underwent surgical fixation and, following a course of physiotherapy, successfully recovered with no residual winging and full range of movement.

Type IIIB Tibial Tubercle Avulsion Fracture: A Case Report.

Tibial tubercle avulsion fractures are uncommon injuries that are seen mostly in adolescent male patients during athletic activities. The mechanism of injury usually involves a strong eccentric contraction of the quadriceps femoris muscle when the proximal tibial physis is closing, leading to failure of the physis at the patellar tendon insertion. The treatment of patients with tibial tubercle avulsion fractures depends on the fracture pattern; it can be conservative with immobilization in a long leg cast in extension for 6 weeks with minimal displacement (< 2 mm) and/or acceptable displacemen

Ultrasound diagnosis of medial clavicular epiphysis avulsion fracture in a neonate.

Clavicle fractures are the most common bony injury that occurs during the delivery process. We present a case of medial clavicular physeal fracture mimicking sternoclavicular dislocation diagnosed by ultrasound (US) in a neonate. The infant presented to our clinic at 12 days old with improving left upper extremity pseudoparalysis and outside radiographs interpreted as left sternoclavicular dislocation. US demonstrated a displaced physeal fracture rather than a dislocation. The radiologist should be aware of this potential distinction. Our case shows the usefulness of US in obtaining the defini

[Pseudarthrosis after bony avulsion fracture of the posterior cruciate ligament].

BACKGROUND: Tibial bony avulsion fractures of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) are rare injuries and in certain cases a delayed healing or non-union can occur under conservative treatment. OBJECTIVE: Presentation of the clinical result of patients with pseudarthrosis who were secondarily operated on after bony avulsion of the PCL. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included all patients who were operated on since 2010 for reasons of delayed or non-union PCL avulsion fracture in this clinic. Standardized questionnaires and follow-up documentation, e.g. visual analog scale (VAS), Internation

Surgical treatment of an ischial tuberosity avulsion fracture with delayed presentation.

Avulsion fractures of the ischial tuberosity usually occur in skeletally immature athletes following eccentric contraction of the hamstrings. When displaced fractures are left untreated, subsequent non-union and proximal hamstring fibrosis may lead to chronic pain and reduced activity. However, the indications for and outcomes of operative fixation when presentation is delayed remain unclear. We report the case of a 14 year old male athlete who presented to our institution 6 weeks after sustaining a displaced ischial tuberosity avulsion fracture. He underwent open reduction and internal fixati

A unique case of bilateral triceps avulsion fracture in a patient with pseudohypoparathyroidism.

Triceps tendon ruptures and avulsions are rare injuries and are often associated with systemic diseases. This paper illustrates the unique case of a 20-year-old female patient with pseudohypoparathyroidism, who sustained bilateral triceps avulsion fractures after a fall. She underwent suture anchor fixation, augmented with tension band suture as double row repair with excellent post-operative results. We describe the pathophysiology of this injury and the unique method of fixation, which can be an alternative effective method to repair these injuries.

Neglected, semimembranosus osteochondral avulsion fracture of the posteromedial tibial plateau.

Semimembranosus avulsion fracture is infrequently reported and is easy to miss on plain radiographs; the mechanism of injury is highly controversial. Initial reports linked it to anterior cruciate ligament and medial meniscal tears. We report an osteochondral semimembranosus avulsion fracture of the posteromedial tibial plateau with associated posterior cruciate ligament rupture. Also described is a novel surgical fixation technique for such osteochondral fractures where the surgical exposure is limited due to the obliquity of the fracture line resulting in a greater involvement of the articul

Arthroscopic treatment of a PCL avulsion fracture in a skeletally immature patient.

Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) avulsions from the tibial attachment site in children are rare. Six cases have been reported in the English literature since 1975. Osteochondral avulsions of the PCL can be easily missed on plain radiographs in skeletally immature patients because of the rarity of these injuries and open proximal tibial physis. To properly recognize and treat the condition, careful physical examination and adequate imaging studies are crucial. Few case reports demonstrate successful surgical treatment of the injury using screw fixation. This article presents a case of a 13-yea

Osteochondral flap avulsion fracture in a child with forearm compartment syndrome.

Traumatic elbow dislocations account for approximately 3% to 6% of childhood upper extremity injuries, and 41% of these dislocations are concomitant injuries around the elbow. Most of these injuries are associated with a fall on an outstretched hand. Compartment syndrome is one recognized complication after elbow dislocation and distal humeral and radial neck fracture. Compartment syndrome in the forearm is a devastating complication in children with forearm, elbow, and supracondylar fractures. Compartment syndrome occurs as the result of hypoxic damage caused by interruption of the circulatio

Intentional avulsion fracture of the second cervical vertebra in a hypotonic child.

Children uncommonly present with cervical fractures due to high-impact injuries. A 4-year-old child with developmental delay and chronic hypotonia presented to the hospital with acute onset of irritability and transient difficulty in walking. Lateral neck x-rays showed avulsion fracture of the second cervical vertebra. Neck magnetic resonance imaging study showed injury to the interspinal ligaments between the first and second cervical vertebrae in addition to confirming the acute avulsion fracture of C-2. The child was injured after he was thrown onto a bed from a distance of 1 to 2 ft accord

Simultaneous bilateral tibial tubercle avulsion fracture in a basketball player.

A 16-year-old male basketball player had sustained an injury upon landing after a forceful jump. Plain radiography demonstrated bilateral tibial tubercle avulsion fracture involving partially proximal physis. Open reduction and internal fixation were performed at once. Continuous passive motion was started immediately after operation, and the patient was ambulated with hinged knee extension braces. After 27 months follow-up his knees completely regained normal range of motion except a 3 degrees extension loss in the left knee. He resumed all daily functional activities (Lysholm functional scor

Femoral head avulsion fracture with malunion to the acetabulum: a case report.

The case of a patient who sustained an avulsion fracture of the femoral head (Pipkin Type I) that was unrecognized is described. The patient was referred to the authors' institution four months after injury, and radiographic studies showed a malunited avulsion fracture of the femoral head to the acetabulum. The patient subsequently went on to an excellent result after surgical debridement. The authors recommend additional radiographic studies in cases to exclude unrecognized fractures where a possible hip subluxation may have occurred.

[Avulsion fractures of the distal part of the radius with anterior displacement in children].

The authors report 7 cases of fractures of the distal part of the radius, with a frontal displacement with children. This fracture is rare in pediatric traumatology. There is no particular type of mechanism that will provoke that fracture; in five cases the child was falling down on the palm of his hand and in two cases in a forced flexion. The problem about this fracture is the stability of the reduction. A proper function of the wrist is impossible with an imperfect result. The orthopedic treatment is often unable to stabilize the fracture. The authors need a surgical management using a plat

Avulsion of the transverse ligament associated with a fracture of the atlas: a case report.

Avulsion or rupture of the transverse ligament may occur in combination with a Jefferson fracture of the atlas as a result of the spreading of the lateral masses of C1. In this patient, an avulsion of the transverse ligament was associated with a fracture of the atlas without spreading of the lateral masses and in combination with a wedge compression fracture of the body of C5. It is also important to consider that multiple injuries to the upper cervical spine (occiput to C2) can and do occur with relative frequency. Appropriate management is based not on the principle of stabilizing all injur

Isolated fracture-avulsions of the tibial insertions of the cruciate ligaments of the knee.

This paper discusses the treatment of isolated fracture-avulsions of the tibial insertions of the cruciate ligaments of the knee. The indications for conservative treatment or open reduction and osteosynthesis, are based on a classification by Meyer and McKeever which takes into account the displacement of the avulsed fragment. This is the crucial factor in the choice of treatment.
