[Intramedullary fixation of pediatric bone shaft fractures].

Intramedullary stabilisation (Prévot-nailing) of shaft fractures in childhood allows full weight bearing without cast. Early fracture healing is seen by respecting soft tissue around fracture and by using distal or proximal approaches. Good indications of femoral shaft osteosynthesis are recommended in oblique- and transverse-fractures. Intramedullary stabilization seems to be a good alternative methode instead of casting calf-shaft-fractures. An instable fracture of forearm may be treated intramedullary to avoid often observed displacement ad axim and rotation. Humoral fractures primary have

[Fractures of the scaphoid bone in soldiers].

The conservative treatment and results obtained in the treatment of 30 scaphoid bone fractures in soldiers aging from 18 to 22 years are reported. The immobilization was performed after acute posttraumatic edema, the latest 4 days after injury, first using the plaster splint and then the "plaster gloves." The immobilization lasted two months. The complete healing was achieved in 29 injured and pseudoarthrosis occurred in one case only.

Temporal bone fractures. Review of 90 cases.

Of 1,300 consecutive head-injured patients admitted to the hospital over a 20-month time period, 118 were found to have skull fractures, of which 22% involved the temporal bone. These figures form part of a larger study of 90 temporal bone fractures treated over a six-year period from 1975 through 1981. The most common cause of a temporal bone fracture was a motor vehicle accident occurring in 40/90 (44%) patients. Pertinent physical findings, occurring alone or in combination, were a hemotympanum, bleeding from the ear canal, tympanic membrane perforation, facial paralysis, and CSF otorrhea.

Experimental fracture investigations concerning the hyoid bone fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Extensive literature exists concerning the etiology and morphology of fractures of the hyoid bone (h.b.) in cases of fatal strangulation. There is an agreement to the effect that fractures are mostly located within the distal third of the cornua majora (c.m.). Although several predictors have been described very accurately, the fracture analysis has neither been based on the osseous construction nor on the stress distribution of the c.m. under strangulation resulting from the configuration and its details. This especially applies to the apex of the distal ends of the big horns, t

[Bilateral fracture of the pisiform bone].

Fracture of the pisiform bone is exceptional compared with the other carpal bones. Such lesions may be missed in the emergency room because of the complex anatomy of the carpal region. The usual circumstances leading to fracture of the pisiform bone include fall with reception on the hyperextended wrist, traffic accidents, and blunt trauma. The purpose of this work was to present a case of bilateral fracture of the pisiform bones. A 34-year-old woman presented with pain along the ulnar borders of both wrists after a fall. The mechanism of fracture was direct trauma on both hands after receptio

[Bone quality and fracture susceptibility].

Prevention of fractures brings about the effort to eliminate their potential causes. Osteoporosis syndrome belongs to the most frequent causes of the bone fractures. The use of densitometric methods may bring an overestimation of the bone quantity. Because of the independent contribution to mechanical resistance, the bone quality needs to be also evaluated. Qualitative changes of the bone can occur at the level of the bone as an organ, or at levels of its components--cortex, spongiosis and bone matrix. Bone quality is influenced mainly genetically; however, it can deteriorate also with age or

Fractures of the sesamoid bones of the thumb.

Stability of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint is provided by the collateral ligament proper, the accessory collateral ligament, the proximal and distal palmar ligaments, and the palmar plate. The adductor pollicis and flexor pollicis brevis muscles also provide soft tissue support and insert on the proximal phalanx of the thumb by way of the sesamoid bones. Fractures of the metacarpophalangeal joint sesamoid bones are uncommon but are often associated with sporting injuries during which the joint is acutely hyperextended. Routine anteroposterior and lateral radiographs may be unremarkable,

Bone remodeling in hip fracture.

Hip fracture incidence has shown strong upward secular trends in many societies with wide differences in age adjusted incidence between nations. Falls and reduced physical activity have emerged as the strongest risk factors in epidemiological studies, while clinical investigations have pointed to secondary hyperparathyroidism as an important candidate cause of the loss of femoral cortical bone in old age. Until recently there have been few studies performed directly on the region of interest in the proximal femur. Non-invasive methodology using 85Sr has now been developed by our group for meas

Floating petrous bone fracture.

Floating petrous bone fracture appears to occur when the elastic pediatric skull is subjected to large compressive forces. Unlike a longitudinal fracture, a floating petrous bone fracture does not involve the ear canal and squamous cortex. Rather, the fracture line runs through the middle ear, separating the petrous apex from its lateral and inferior bony attachments. Characteristic clinical findings include immediate onset of conductive hearing loss, with ipsilateral sixth and seventh cranial nerve paralysis. This article details the third known occurrence of this type of fracture, and includ

Pathologic fractures of long bones.

Sixty-two cases of pathologic fractures occurring in 53 patients treated at Scott and White Memorial Hospital from 1966 to 1976 are reviewed and analyzed with regard to type of neoplastic lesion, location, mode of therapy initiated, functional stability of therapy selected, and average length of survival after orthopedic procedure. Pertinent literature is reviewed, and our results are compared with those of other series.

[Fracture and pseudoarthrosis of the scafoid bone].

Individuality, which is so expressed in medicine has found as well its application in fractures and pseudoarthroses of scaphoid bone. In the treatment of fracture and pseudoarthrosis of scaphoid bone in each case, patient's occupation, age, body constitution, intensity of pains, functional status of fist and extent of osteonecrotic changes should be considered. In our work we have obtained the best results in "early" pseudoarthrosis by surgical treatment according to Matti-u and Russe-u and in the "late" ones by the method of complete extirpation of necrotic scaphoid. As fist and wrist-joint a
