This study evaluated the efficacy of 100% CO2 against adults and immature stages (eggs, larvae, and pupae) of S. granarius at 25 °C (optimal temperature) and 37 °C (sublethal thermal stress) after three, six, 12, and 21 days of exposure. A gas chromatographic (GC) procedure for determining fumigants in grains was developed. Fumigants were leached from grain samples with the official AOAC method using acetone-water (5 + 1). Systemic methyl bromide (CH3Br) poisoning with signs and symptoms of varying severity developed in nine greenhouse workers after acute inhalational exposure on two consecutive days. Measurements of CH3Br, carried out at the site within hours after the accident, suggest that exposure on the second day may have been in excess of 200 ppm (800 mg/m3) CH3Br.
