Myiasis is a tropical infection most often caused by Dermatotobia hominis, also known as the botfly. It is rarely seen in the United States. The infection has a slow evolution and often presents with painful lesions that mimic furunculosis, boils, and infected cysts. The mechanism of infection is based on the deposition of botfly eggs onto an arthropod, which acts as a vector of transmission. The arthropod infects various hosts and botfly eggs are concomitantly deposited on the host. The Dermatobia eggs transform into their larval form and penetrate the skin through adjacent adnexal structures…

500 patients of a dispensaire of diabetes were inspected dermatologically. 335 patients had a duration of the glucose metabolism intoleratio … eration. Bad healing tendencles of wounds, pruritus, intensive dermatomycoses, balanitis, vulvitis, furunculosis and pyodermias are important references to a glucose metabolism intoleration. They should give rise to look for a diabetes irrespective of the age of the patient.

Furuncular myiasis is an infestation of the skin caused by Dermatobia hominis larvae known as "ver macaque" in French Guyana, "berne" in Brazil, "torsalo" in Colombia, or "human botfly" in English-language literature. It has identical features in man and domestic mammals. The primary lesion consists of a boil-like inflammatory papule with a central punctum exuding a serosanguinous discharge. The respiratory sinus of the D. hominis larvae may be visible through the punctum. Myiasis secondary to D. hominis accounts for 10% of imported tropical dermatosis observed in Paris. Diagnosis of furuncula

The imported tropical dermatoses include the various manifestations of dermal myiasis. Cases of the furuncular form of cutaneous myiasis are infrequently seen and occur much more seldom than creeping eruption. Nearly exclusively furuncular lesions appear after infestation with the larvae of Dermatobia hominis, the human botfly, in Central and South America and with the larvae of the tumbu-fly, Cordylobia anthropophaga, in tropical Africa. We had the opportunity to see a patient, who had acquired furuncular myiasis due to Dermatobia hominis in Bolivia and the emergence of his fully developed la

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare, poorly understood condition that presents as inflammatory nodules of the breast. It is often initially misdiagnosed as furunculosis or cellulitis. Despite the painful, scarring, and debilitating nature of the disease, patients often have a delay in accurate diagnosis and treatment. Even when IGM is considered as a diagnosis, it is one of exclusion, with the differential diagnosis including serious conditions such as breast cancer, sarcoidosis, and cutaneous tuberculosis. Therefore, appropriate workup is important. Given that IGM is a disease o…

A young adult Boxer dog was presented with a papular dermatitis on the dorsal back and ventral neck that had developed while it was being treated with cyclosporine and cephalexin for atopic dermatitis and secondary superficial staphylococcal pyoderma, respectively. Histopathology demonstrated nodular to diffuse pyogranulomatous dermatitis with focal furunculosis. Numerous bacterial rods, free in the tissue and engulfed by neutrophils and macrophages, could be demonstrated on stained samples (haematoxylin-eosin; Giemsa). Bacterial culture from an aseptically collected skin biopsy punch sample y…

The revised practice guideline 'Bacterial skin infections' developed by the Dutch College of General Practitioners replaces the previous practice guideline from 1998. Most bacterial skin infections can be diagnosed based on the patient history and clinical findings. Skin cultures and serologic analysis (in the case oferythema migrans) are not necessary. Exceptions are made for patients with bacterial skin infection and a high risk of MRSA involvement, or if nasal treatment is indicated for patients with recurring furunculosis. A superficial skin infection can be treated with local therapy. In …

Superficial bacterial folliculitis (SBF) represents a common dermatological diagnosis in dogs that can be successfully managed with either topical and/or systemic treatments. In the present study we evaluated the efficacy of a fluorescent light energy (FLE) device as sole management for SBF. The same FLE device has been shown, as adjunct therapy to systemic antibiotic or alone, to effectively control clinical manifestation of interdigital furunculosis. Twenty dogs were randomized to receive FLE once (six dogs) or twice (six dogs) weekly in comparison with oral anti-biotic (eight dogs) until co…

BACKGROUND: Furuncular cutaneous myiasis caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga is a rare condition in non-endemic regions and may mimic furunculosis or skin abscesses, posing a diagnostic challenge.
CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy 24-year-old woman presented eight days after returning from Zanzibar with multiple tender erythematous nodules on the buttocks and left forearm. One larva was self-extracted, and others were removed under medical supervision. Ultrasound showed subcutaneous tracts consistent with larval infestation. Morphological analysis confirmed C. anthropophaga. The patient …

A 2-year-old female Boxer dog was presented with a history of skin lesions that started 1 month after being given oral glucocorticoids for a … ubcutis. These organisms were associated with a multinodular, pyogranulomatous luminal folliculitis/furunculosis, dermatitis, and panniculitis. Curvularia sp. was isolated from the cutaneous lesions. The histologic identification of dematiaceous fungal organisms in the hair follicles may explain how phaeohyphomycosis can occur without history of a penetrating …
