OBJECTIVE: We aimed to construct/validate a radiomics method based on MR FS-T2WI sequence for the evaluation of kidney function in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The clinical data and MRI images of 114 patients with ADPKD were retrospectively analyzed. With a glomerular filtration rate of 60 mL/min per 1.73 m2 as the cutoff value, patients were divided into two groups, where there were 59 patients with GFR ≥60 mL/min per 1.73 m2 (including CKD1 and CKD2 phase) and 55 patients with GFR <60 mL/min per 1.73 m2 (including CKD3 phase and h

Crossed fused renal ectopia with a single ureter and single renal vein is a rare congenital anomaly in which both the fused kidneys lie on one side of the body. We present an unusual case of crossed fused renal ectopia with a single ureter, single renal vein, and a calculus in a 22-year-old man who presented with lower abdominal pain, burning micturition, and a right-side abdominal lump present for three months. On abdominal ultrasound and non-contrast computed tomography (CT), the left kidney was not visualized in the left renal fossa. However, we noted it on the right side, fused to the lowe…

Simultaneous bilateral adrenal masses are less common in patients with Cushing syndrome (CS). This case report focuses on the clinical features, diagnostic workup, and treatment of a patient with bilateral adrenal tumors causing Cushing syndrome, with a horseshoe kidney. We report a case of bilateral adrenal tumors presenting with Cushing syndrome with a horseshoe kidney. Adrenalectomy was undertaken to manage the excess cortisol. Histopathological evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of adrenal cortical carcinoma (ACC). The preoperative cortisol level was 1750 nmol/L, which dropped significantl

BACKGROUND: Pheochromocytoma is a neuroendocrine tumor, and its treatment is dependent on surgical resection. Due to the wide availability of cross-sectional imaging, pheochromocytomas are commonly seen as small tumors less than 10 cm in size and are mostly treated with minimally invasive surgery. Their concomitant presence with horseshoe kidney or other anatomical and vascular anomalies is rare. Herein, we present a surgically complex giant pheochromocytoma case who underwent an open left radical adrenalectomy.

The horseshoe kidney is a frequent urological birth defect. The most frequent complications are urinary tract infections, stones and hydronephrosis. The occurrence of glomerular disease in horseshoe kidney is rare. Therefore, we report the first case of minimal change disease occurring in a patient with horseshoe kidney in literature. A 22-year-old Caucasian man without personal or family medical history admitted to the pneumology department for a pulmonary artery embolism. In presence of a generalized oedema, a biological assessment was performed yielding intense nephrotic syndrome with urine

Horseshoe kidney is the most typical kidney fusion anomaly among children (0.25%) and associated with various urological and non-urological abnormalities. Wilms' tumor is the most common malignant neoplasm of kidneys and the third most common solid malignant neoplasm in pediatrics. Wilms' tumor in a horseshoe kidney is rare (0.4-0.9%). The authors present Wilms' tumor in a horseshoe kidney and describe diagnostic methods, neoadjuvant chemotherapy and tumor resection.

BACKGROUND: Ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction is commonly observed in patients with horseshoe kidneys due to congenital anatomical anomalies, presenting unique challenges in both diagnosis and surgical management. The role of isthmusectomy in laparoscopic reconstructive surgery for this condition remains a topic of ongoing debate. This report outlines our initial experience with a minimally invasive approach to managing UPJ obstruction in a horseshoe kidney patient, utilizing Anderson-Hynes dismembered pyeloplasty combined with isthmusectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Fusion, pelvic, and duplicated urinary tract anomalies of the kidney are rarely seen. There might be some difficulties in the stone treatment, in the administration of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL), retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), and laparoscopic pyelolithotomy procedures in these patients due to the anatomical variations in kidneys with anomalies.
AIM: To evaluate RIRS results on patients with upper urinary tract anomalies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data of 35 patients with horseshoe kidney, pelvic ectopic kidney, and doub

Non-fused crossed renal ectopia (CRE) is a rare congenital anomaly where one kidney migrates contralaterally without fusion. We report a 31-year-old woman presenting nine days postpartum with febrile abdominal pain revealing a left non-fused crossed ectopic kidney complicated by bilateral ureterohydronephrosis and acute pyelonephritis. Management involved bilateral ureteral stenting and antibiotic therapy with favorable recovery. This case highlights the potential for pregnancy-related physiological changes to unmask previously silent renal anomalies and underscores the diagnostic importance o

We report a case of laminaria hypersensitivity treated with diphenhydramine and corticosteroids. A literature review identified 10 previously reported cases, with 8 recognized as anaphylaxis, and good outcomes with corticosteroids and antihistamines despite limited epinephrine utilization. Laminaria hypersensitivity is likely IgE mediated with an increased anaphylaxis risk with prior exposure.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common genetic renal disease, with a reported prevalence ranging from one in 400 to one in 1000. ADPKD accounts for as high as 10% of end-stage renal disease cases. It is characterized by cystic formation replacing kidney parenchyma leading to renal enlargement and renal functional impairment. Consequently, it is associated with renal and extrarenal complications contributing to high mortality. On the other hand, horseshoe kidney (HSK) is a common congenital renal anomaly, with an incidence ranging between one in 400 and 600. Sur

Background: The surgical treatment of horseshoe kidney (HSK) remains a huge challenge because of the complex anatomy and abnormal blood vessel distribution. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the surgical technique and outcomes of robot-assisted laparoscopic isthmus division using endoscopic transection equipment (endoscopic linear stapler; Ethicon, ECHELON 60 FLEX™) in the treatment of symptomatic HSK and to conduct a literature review. Materials and Methods: Patients with HSK who underwent robot-assisted laparoscopic isthmus division using endoscopic transection equipment from August 20

Cross-fused renal ectopia and pelvic kidney are individually well-documented congenital anomalies, but their concurrent occurrence is exceedingly uncommon. We report a 2-day-old male neonate referred for postnatal evaluation after antenatal non-visualization of the left kidney. Initial ultrasound revealed a right kidney in normal position with mild hydronephrosis and a small left pelvic kidney with preserved corticomedullary differentiation. Follow-up imaging demonstrated right-sided cross-fused renal ectopia with 2 distinct moieties and mild hydronephrosis, while renal cortical scintigraphy c

Abdominal aortic aneurysms, renal cell carcinomas and crossed fused renal ectopias are significant conditions within the fields of vascular and urological surgery. The simultaneous occurrence of all three is exceptionally rare; to date, there have been no reports of them occurring concurrently. This case, however, describes what we believe to be the first documented case of all three conditions presenting simultaneously in a single patient. The management of this rare case involved a combined surgical approach, including open aneurysm repair and partial ectopic nephrectomy.

The authors studied hydronephrosis characteristics for horseshoe kidney in 170 patients aged 15-70. Basing on anatomic and functional features and urethral condition in each patient 136 operative interventions on one or two parts of the fused kidney in 125 patients were conducted. 26 heminephrectomies were carried out in hydronephrosis stage III, pyonephrosis and acute purulent focal pyelonephritis. 110 stage I-II hydronephrosis patients underwent an original reconstructive combined surgery on the fused kidney ending in formation of two separate organs. High incidence of hydronephrosis in hors…

Fifty-two abortuses with CNS defects, delivered during the first half of gestation, were examined for the presence of fused suprarenal glands. Three cases were found, the first in an 8 week embryo aborted spontaneously; the second and third in 18 and 20-week foetuses terminated for suspected CNS abnormality. All three had severe vertebral pathology in addition to the fused suprarenals and the CNS defects. It is suggested that the anomaly may be part of a widespread embryonal distortion secondary to disturbance in the vertebral axis. Since going to press, a further case of fused suprarenals has

Crossed-fused renal ectopia (CFRE) is a rare congenital disease in which one of the kidneys with its ureter crosses the midline and fuses with the contralateral kidney. The association of this malformation with the presence of primary renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is even more anecdotal; there are only a few cases reported in the literature. We describe the case of a 62 year-old man with CFRE associated with renal cell carcinoma, which was successfully removed by retroperitoneoscopy, after careful preoperative study of blood supply and anatomical features.
