Spontaneous fluctuations in the concentrations of oral sulfur-containing gases.

Breath hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and methyl-mercaptan (CH3SH) concentrations are used as quantitative indicators of halitosis. However, measurements of these gases in duplicate oral samplings often show poor reproducibility. To determine if this poor reproducibility is an artifact of the collection/analytical procedure or a true biological phenomenon, we used a standardized technique to collect from 20 to 30 oral gas samples at two-minute intervals from 11 healthy subjects. The samples were analyzed for sulfur gases and CO2. Sizable variations in H2S and CH3SH concentrations were not associated w…

The effect of a time delay on the measurement of capillary blood gases.

Patients using domiciliary nasal ventilation, or long-term oxygen, require regular assessment which could be carried out in the home. Blood gas analysis may be regarded as an essential part of the assessment. The present study investigated the effect of a 1-h time delay on the measurement of capillary blood gases. Four samples of arterialized earlobe blood were collected from 15 outpatients. One sample was analysed immediately, the other three were stored on crushed ice and analysed at intervals of 30, 45, and 60 min post-collection. In order to examine any range effect, a wide range of PaO2 v…

[Blood gases and pH value in swine anesthetized with barbiturate].

The influence of short term anaesthesia with the N-methyl barbiturate Eunarcon on the pH and blood gases was investigated in 19 clinical healthy male castrated pigs of the breed Large White, three months old and with a mean body weight of 30 kg. The factors of oxygen in the blood--content, saturation of hemoglobin, O2 partial pressure--are diminished continuously during anaesthesia, with a decrease of pO2 on 77% of the initial value. The pCO2 increased, and the peak value of 11% above the initial level was seen already 10 minutes after starting the anaesthesia. The pH value like a seismograph …

The effect of fetal sepsis on umbilical cord blood gases.

The relationship between fetal sepsis and acid-base status is unknown. We hypothesized that in utero sepsis would result in fetal metabolic acidemia. In a retrospective study during a 38-month period, the acid-base status at birth of neonates with in utero sepsis, documented by positive blood cultures, was reviewed. Compared with term neonates, preterm neonates had a 22-fold increase in the risk of bacteremia at birth. In spite of this increased risk of sepsis, there was no significant alteration in arterial pH in preterm septic neonates when compared with preterm controls. Fetal sepsis at ter

Effect of enlarged adenoids on arterial blood gases in children.

The enlarged adenoid is a common disorder in children resulting in nasopharyngeal obstruction. Many authors suggest that increased nasal resistance to respiration may cause disturbances in the pulmonary ventilation and carry the risk of obstructive sleep apnoea and/or cardiopulmonary syndrome. This study comprised 30 children complaining of long-standing nasal obstruction due to enlarged adenoids. Adenoidectomy was performed and the arterial blood gases were measured before and one month after surgery. Twelve normal children were also included as controls. Statistical evaluation of the results…

[Intestinal gases and digestive pathology: clinical syndromes and their treatment].

A number of annoying and frequent disturbances caused by an increase in intestinal meteorism have aroused the interest of students since the last century. Aerophagy, abdominal distension, flatulence represent the commonest aspects of this frequent gastroenterological pathology. The new diagnostic approaches have made it possible to classify the principal mechanisms involved in the production and elimination of intestinal gases. It has thus been possible to study with greater precision the composition of gaseous content and the origin and removal of intestinal gases. It is possible to demonstra…

Longitudinal dispersion of gases measured in a model of the bronchial airways.

We investigated the longitudinal dispersion of helium (He), methane, acetylene, butane, sulfur hexafluoride, and octafluorocyclobutane (C4F8) in a clear plastic model of the human bronchial airways. The dimensions of the seven airway generations (0-6) of the model were chosen to be equal to those given by Weibel's model A (Morphometry of the Human Lung; New York: Academic, 1963). Total volume of the model amounts to 52 ml. A small bolus of each of the tracer gases was injected within 1 ms into a constant airflow at the inlet of the model, and the bolus dispersion curve was measured at the outl…

Anaesthetic gases and health risks to laboratory personnel: a review.

The evidence that chronic exposure to inhalational anaesthetic agents may be associated with psychomotor, hepatic and renal dysfunction, to increased susceptibility to infections and neoplastic disease, and to an increased incidence of miscarriages and foetal abnormalities, is discussed. The risk to pregnant women seems greatest after exposure to rather high concentrations of nitrous oxide. Although it is not suggested that all laboratory premises will be equally at risk, such levels as 400 ppm halothane and 8000 ppm nitrous oxide can build up in small poorly ventilated rooms when these agents

Gaseous mediators are increasingly recognized as critical regulators of human physiology and pathology, offering unique therapeutic opportun … tic scope of gas biology is expanding beyond NO to encompass other clinically relevant and emerging gases, including O2, CO, H2S, H2, CO2, SO2, and Xe. These gases exhibit multifaceted biological effects ranging from cytoprotection and vasoregulation to antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory actions, thereby necessitating innovative material-based and bior …

Dynamics and metabolic effects of intestinal gases in healthy humans.

Many living beings use exogenous and/or endogenous gases to attain evolutionary benefits. We make a comprehensive assessment of one of the major gaseous reservoirs in the human body, i.e., the bowel, providing extensive data that may serve as reference for future studies. We assess the intestinal gases in healthy humans, including their volume, composition, source and local distribution in proximal as well as distal gut. We analyse each one of the most abundant intestinal gases including nitrogen, oxygen, nitric oxide, carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide and cya…

Photoexcitation effect on the adsorption of hazardous gases on silica surface.

There is very little scientific understanding of photoexcitation effect on the adsorption properties of adsorbent. The adsorption of four hazardous gases (SARIN (propan-2-ylmethylphospho-nofluoridate), methyl dichlorophosphate (MDCP), trimethyl phosphate (TMP) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S)) on silica surface is taken as target sample in this work. The adsorption energy order (MDCP<SARIN<TMP) in the ground state is consistent with the strength order of intermolecular hydrogen bond (inter-HB) between hydroxyl group of silica surface and hazardous gas, and the desorption order of the three gases in …

Effects of exposure of parents to toxic gases in Bhopal on the offspring.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to methyl isocyanate and other toxic gases in Bhopal, India, on December 3, 1984 resulted in thousands of acute deaths, pregnancy loss and long-term effects. METHODS: From 1985 to 2007, we conducted successive surveys of vital status and health to determine whether the exposure of parents to toxic gases in the Bhopal incident affected the 5-year survival and anthropometric variables of their offspring. RESULTS: Initial 5-year mortality of offspring of exposed parents was very high. Male but not female offspring who were exposed to gases in utero or who were born to expos…
