Anion-Regulated Phase Separation Constructs Mechanically Tunable Ion Gels for Strain Sensing.

Although ion gels are promising for flexible sensing, simultaneously achieving high mechanical strength, stretchability, ionic conductivity, and interfacial adhesion remains challenging. Here, we report the preparation of ion gels with tunable mechanical properties using two ionic liquids (ILs) with different compatibilities with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) via a one-pot ultraviolet (UV)-initiated polymerization. Adjusting the mixing ratio of the two ILs can regulate the phase separation of the gel and promote the formation of a bicontinuous phase. The optimized ion gel exhibits a tensile strengt…

Optimized Mn²⁺-Phos-tag Gels Reveal Sarcomeric Protein Dephosphorylation upon Myofibril Preparation.

Precise quantification of myofilament protein phosphorylation is essential for understanding the regulation of cardiac contractility in heal … r the course of 24 hours. We submit that TCA-extracted heart standards in combination with Phos-tag gels can provide valuable quality control for the phosphorylation status of myofibril preparations, and that inclusion of a high-affinity PP2A and PP1 phosphatase inhibitor like okadaic acid may benefit future myofibril mechanics studies.

Enzymatically degalactosylated xyloglucan in situ gels for topical delivery of triamcinolone acetonide.

Thermoresponsive in situ gelling systems are attractive platforms for topical ocular delivery because they can be administered as liquids and rapidly form gels at the ocular surface, thereby increasing residence time and sustaining drug release. This study investigated whether enzymatic degalactosylation of tamarind-seed xyloglucan could be used to develop thermoresponsive hydrogels for the delivery of triamcinolone acetonide (TA). Degalactosylation kinetics, monitored by monosaccharide analysis and oligosaccharide profiling, showed rapid initial galactose removal followed by a plateau near 50…

Recent Advances in Plant-Based Edible Emulsion Gels for 3D-Printed Foods.

3D printing has emerged as a suitable technology for creating foodstuff with functional, sensorial, and nutritional attributes. There is growing interest in creating plant-based foods as alternatives to address current demands, especially to tailor consumer preferences. Consequently, plant-derived edible inks for additive manufacturing have emerged as suitable options, including emulsion gels (or emulgels). These gels can be formulated entirely from plant-derived lipids, proteins, polysaccharides, and/or other ingredients to form complex fluids that belong to the category of soft matter. This …

Highly Conductive Liquid Metal Emulsion Gels for Three-Dimensionally Printed Stretchable Electronics.

Gallium-based liquid metals are promising for stretchable electronics due to their inherent deformability and excellent conductivity. However, the lack of a scalable and automated fabrication process has limited their practical applications. This study introduces a two-step method to create liquid metal emulsion gels suitable for 3D printing, characterized by densely packed liquid metal microcapsules within polymer matrices. The resulting emulsion gel demonstrates favorable rheological properties for 3D printing and minimal shrinkage through solidification. With a substantial fraction of sizab…

Solvation-Driven Self-Assembly of Polyetheramine-Epoxide Gels: Insights from Molecular Simulations.

Polymer-based materials have emerged as promising platforms for controlled nutrient delivery in agriculture, offering enhanced efficiency and sustainability. In this study, we performed molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the self-assembly mechanism of Medipacs epoxy polymer (MEP113) vesicles in aqueous environments. We show that MEP113 concentration critically influences its aggregation behavior: the simulation in the gas phase (vacuum) favors polymer clustering, while aqueous solvation promotes molecular dispersion through hydration effects. Radial distribution function (RDF) analy

Hierarchically porous UiO-67-bpy metal-organic gels for efficient tetracycline removal.

The existence of TC residues in the environment and the resultant development of opposition mechanisms constitute a serious menace to both ecological systems and human health. In the present study, UiO-67-bpy-X gels were prepared by the introduction of H2bpydc ligands and acetic acid modifiers, followed by a systematic evaluation of their TC adsorption capabilities. Characterization results revealed that UiO-67-bpy-2.4 gel displayed raised specific surface area (1953 m2 g-1) and a graded porous structure. When conditions were optimized, the material manifested a maximum TC adsorptive capacity …

Polysaccharide emulsion gels for dysphagia-friendly surimi-based diets: development and application.

Currently, dysphagia-friendly foods enriched with hydrophilic polysaccharide colloids are gaining attention, which are valued by dysphagia or senile subpopulation for their appropriate texture, resemblance to regular food, and high nutritional density. In this study, multi-polysaccharides emulsion gels were prepared and evaluated for developing dysphagia-friendly food. The findings revealed that emulsion gels with 2 % polysaccharide and 1-8 % sunflower oil had a visual appeal with hardness of 1000-3000 N/m2, adhesion of less than 50 g·s, cohesion of 60-90 % and water retention of more than 90 …

3D-printable emulsion gels structured via depletion attraction from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii biomass.

Depletion attraction, driven by interactions between colloidal particles and non-adsorbing macromolecules, offers a simple and effective route for fabricating emulsion gels with desirable viscoelasticity and shear-thinning behavior essential for extrusion-based three-dimensional (3D) food printing. In this study, we propose a facile, additive-free strategy to construct emulsion gels by leveraging the intrinsic depletion effects derived from the biomolecular components of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (C. reinhardtii) biomass. By adjusting the oil-to-water phase ratio, self-supporting Pickering-typ…

Characterization, Formation Mechanism, and Curcumin Delivery of Buckwheat Peptide-Based Emulsion Gels.

This study aimed to construct a natural peptide-based emulsion gel (PG) using small peptides (∼2.2 kDa) by mild enzymatic hydrolysis of buckwheat proteins. The obtained PG presented a porous and tight texture and solid-gel viscoelasticity compared with its parent protein-based emulsion gel. Meanwhile, it exhibited good resistance against heating and freeze-thawing. Furthermore, peptide-oil interaction analysis revealed that the gel matrix was enhanced by the hydrophobic aggregation between peptides and oil molecules, H-bonding interaction of peptide molecules, and peptide-oil aggregate repulsi

Stimuli-Responsive Properties of Supramolecular Gels Based on Pyridyl-N-oxide Amides.

The nature of functional groups and their relative position and orientation play an important role in tuning the gelation properties of stimuli-responsive supramolecular gels. In this work, we synthesized and characterized mono-/bis-pyridyl-N-oxide compounds of N-(4-pyridyl)nicotinamide (L1-L3). The gelation properties of these N-oxide compounds were compared with the reported isomeric counterpart mono-/bis-pyridyl-N-oxide compounds of N-(4-pyridyl)isonicotinamide. Hydrogels obtained with L1 and L3 were thermally and mechanically more stable than the corresponding isomeric counterparts. The su…

Synthetic Nanoclay Gels Do Not Cause Skin Irritation in Healthy Human Volunteers.

Synthetic clays are promising biomaterials for delivery of therapeutic molecules in regenerative medicine. However, before their use can be translated into clinical applications, their safety must be assessed in human volunteers. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that a synthetic nanoclay (LAPONITE) does not cause irritation to the human skin. To achieve this, a nanoclay gel at two different concentrations (1.5 and 3% w/v) was applied on the forearm of healthy volunteers for 24 h. 1% sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and 3% (w/v) polyacrylic acid were used as the positive and negative

Carbon Black as Conductive Additive and Structural Director of Porous Carbon Gels.

This work investigates the impact of carbon black (CB) as a porogenic agent and conductive additive in the preparation of electrically conductive nanoporous carbon gels. For this, a series of materials were prepared by the polycondensation of resorcinol/formaldehyde mixtures in the presence of increasing amounts of carbon black. The conductivity of the carbon gel/CB composites increased considerably with the amount of CB, indicating a good dispersion of the additive within the carbon matrix. A percolation threshold of ca. 8 wt.% of conductive additive was found to achieve an adequate "point to…

Progressive Relaxation Behavior and Relaxation Dynamics of sPS Gels upon Controlled Heating.

Progressive relaxation behavior of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) chains in sPS gel was detected in the course of melting via the application of intrinsic fluorescence and fluorescence anisotropy techniques. The melting process included a dissociative process of the network at lower temperature and a relaxation process from helix to worm-like chains at higher temperature. The dynamics of structural relaxation behavior was discovered by intrinsic fluorescence technique, and an abrupt bend emerged at 58 °C on the Arrhenius plot. At temperatures lower than 58 °C, only the dissociation of the heli

A freeze-and-thaw method to reuse agarose gels for DNA electrophoresis.

A novel protocol to reuse agarose following agarose gel electrophoresis was established in this study. By repeated freeze-and-thaw of the agarose gel, ethidium bromide and other buffer components in the gel were safely removed from the gel without generation of any toxic fume. The agarose recovered using this method can be used for further electrophoretic experiments without any issues.
