Connected lives: Care, money management, and gender inequality in low-income households in times of crisis in Argentina.

Inspired by the sociology of Zelizer, this article lays out a framework of analysis that sheds light on money management as a cornerstone of the social organization of care. First, it lays out the features of the money management of care and caretaking practices to reveal a cyclical process in which the money side of care is rendered invisible and naturalized. It then turns to the question of debt, a key aspect of money management, and its reinforcement of gender inequalities during the care crisis associated with COVID-19. The findings are drawn from a qualitative survey of low-income househo

Gender Inequality Improvement in Medical School Admissions in Japan.

Purpose: To investigate the effects of gender discrimination in Japan's medical school admission process and to assess whether the situation has improved since the disclosure of such discrimination in 2018. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using secondary data from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. The proportions of male and female applicants vis-à-vis all successful candidates admitted from 2016 to 2021 were analyzed; four medical schools were found to be systematically guilty of discriminatory admission practices. Acceptance rat

A Health Equity Approach for Implementation of JYNNEOS Vaccination at Large, Community-Based LGBTQIA+ Events - Georgia, August 27-September 5, 2022.

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) have been disproportionately affected during the 2022 U.S. monkeypox outbreak, with Black or African American (Black) MSM being the most affected demographic group (1). As of September 28, 2022, Georgia had reported 1,784 monkeypox cases; 98% of which occurred in males and 77% among Black persons (2). As of September 13, 2022, 60% of reported cases were among persons with HIV infection, and 50% of persons with monkeypox had a sexually transmitted infection within the past year (3). Because of racial disparities in the incidence of monkey

Gender equality does not prevent sexual abuse of women - awareness of a global public health problem.

We examined the prevalence of sexual abuse against women around the world and the protective factors that may prevent this violence. Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data from 470,000 women in 50 countries informed our multivariate estimates. Our results show that one out of ten women aged 18-49 years old, experienced -at least once in their life time- sexual abuse, and most perpetrators are people in the environment of their victims. We also find that women educational attainment is a key factor in order to prevent sexual abuse, but gender equality achievements in economics, politics and h

The EBV-DNA Can be Used as a Diagnostic and Follow-up Parameter of the Rhinopharyngeal Tumors in the Non-Endemic Population of the Western Sicily.

OBJECTIVE: Despite growing gender diversity in medical education, orthopaedic surgery-particularly arthroplasty-remains one of the most male-dominated subspecialties. This review critically evaluates the barriers limiting female surgeons' access to arthroplasty, including disparities in training, mentorship, professional advancement, and leadership roles. In addition it explores the implications of gender disparities on workforce diversity, patient care outcomes, and surgical innovation while identifying strategies to enhance gender equity in the field. INTRODUCTION: Women remain significantl

Exploring women representation in major surgical society annual meetings in Italy.

Gender diversity is increasing in medical schools and among physicians, including in surgical residency and among surgeons. However, leadership roles do not appear to be growing proportionately. To assess whether gender equality within the surgical community is improving, we analyzed gender representation in leading roles at two major events within the field in Italy in 2023. Of the 1,566 participants in leadership roles, 199 (12.71%) were women and 1,368 (87.29%) were men. Women consistently made up less than 25% of session invited speakers, with the highest representation in breast (23.5%),

Sex and Gender Considerations in Orthopaedic Research: Existing Barriers, What's Needed by Institutions and Research Departments, and How to Guide Junior Investigators and Faculty.

JBJS convened a symposium to discuss the reporting of sex and gender in research studies as an imperative to improve research methods and results to benefit all patients. Barriers to improved reporting include a lack of societal and cultural acceptance of its need; a lack of education regarding appropriate terminology and appropriate statistical methods and efficient study designs; a need for increased research funding to support larger group sizes; unknown concordance of cell and animal models with humans to reflect biologic variables such as sex; and a lack of understanding of key considerat

Interpersonal Violence and Gender Inequality in Adolescents: A Systematic Analysis of Global Burden of Disease Data From 1990 to 2019.

PURPOSE: Interpersonal violence is a leading cause of adolescent deaths and disability. This study investigates sex differences in burden of interpersonal violence for adolescents and explores associations with gender inequality. METHOD: Using data from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease study, we report numbers, proportions, rates of interpersonal violence deaths and disability adjusted life years (DALYs) for all ages, and rate of change (from 1990 to 2019) in adolescents aged 10-24 years disaggregated by sex and geography. We explored associations with gender inequality using gender inequali

Policy and Perception: Comparing Attitudes Toward LGBTQ and Gender Equality Between Long-Term Care Staff in Taiwan and Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Integrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) policies within health care is critical to ensuring equitable treatment and improved health outcomes for LGBTQ individuals. However, significant disparities remain in the implementation of these policies, with substantial challenges persisting in culturally and legally diverse settings such as Indonesia and Taiwan. This study explores these issues from the perspectives of long-term care staff in these two countries, focusing on their attitudes towards LGBTQ individuals and the effectiveness of existing policies. Children of the (gender) revolution: A theoretical and empirical synthesis of how gendered division of labour influences fertility.

Gender equity theories of fertility broadly predict that the lowest fertility in high-income settings will be seen in women facing a 'dual burden' of both paid and unpaid labour responsibilities, but that fertility will increase when male partners share domestic labour. Here we provide a critique of some gender equity theories of fertility in demography, and restate the hypothesis in terms of complementarity between partners. Further, we suggest authors use an interdisciplinary approach, such as integrating perspectives from evolutionary theory and the 'Traits-Desires-Intentions-Behaviour' fra

The gender health innovation gap: A perspective from the NIH Office of Research on Women's Health.

Systemic sources of the gender health innovation gap include inattention to the effects of sex and gender on health, underinvestment in health conditions relevant to or limited to women, workforce diversity inequities, and societal attitudes. The US federal government instituted policies and programs to address these challenges and demonstrate commitment to closing this gap with the development of the first National Strategy on Gender Equity and Equality.

Perspectives on sex and gender inclusion in clinical practice guidelines: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) provide standardised direction for the diagnosis, management and treatment of medical conditions. However, sex and gender, critical determinants of health, are often inconsistently incorporated within guideline development. This study explored expert opinions on how sex and gender are currently considered in CPGs, the barriers to meaningful integration and practical strategies to strengthen equity-focused guideline development. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 28 participants representing clinical practice, sex and gende

Gender inequity in postpartum hemorrhage: A public health issue.

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), a leading cause of maternal mortality globally, disproportionately affects women in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), highlighting the deep-rooted gender related inequities in healthcare access, quality, and outcomes. Despite being largely preventable and treatable, PPH continues to claim the lives of thousands of women annually, because of systemic failures, including inadequate maternal health infrastructure, under-resourced healthcare systems, and sociocultural norms that devalue women's health. Gender inequity is manifested in delayed care-seeking, a la

Editorial Commentary: Disaggregation of Sex in Orthopaedic Research Is Essential but Rare.

Disaggregation of research data promotes transparency and is critical to identifying gaps in current knowledge and directing future research. Disaggregation of sex in orthopaedic research is essential but rare. As an example, anterior shoulder instability is affected by sex-based differences in anatomy that impact structural and clinical outcomes, yet fewer than 5% of studies disaggregate by sex. Adherence to the Sex and Gender Equity in Research guidelines is needed to improve research and promote equity.

Multilevel Gender-Equitable Norms and Risk of HIV and Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 Acquisition Among Young South African Women: A Longitudinal Analysis of the HIV Prevention Trials Network 068 Cohort.

PURPOSE: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in South Africa experience a disproportionately high burden of HIV acquisition. National HIV prevalence among AGYW increases nearly three-fold during the transition from late teenage years to their early twenties. We investigated whether beliefs about gender equity influence subsequent HIV acquisition among AGYW in South Africa. METHODS: We used data from the HIV Prevention Trials Network 068, a longitudinal conditional cash transfer study of AGYW in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. Gender-equitable beliefs were measured at the level of the i

The Current Status of Women in Surgery: How to Affect the Future.

IMPORTANCE: Despite women composing half of current medical school classes, surgical specialties still struggle to attract and retain women. Even after successful recruitment into training, women surgeons continue to face gender bias and various obstacles to career advancement, including lower rates of surgical residency completion, board certification, and professional advancement. Gender inequality in medicine has drawn attention; particular consideration regarding the status of women in surgery is warranted. We review research delineating disparities and investigating the causes underlying

Girls just wanna have funds: a new Transparent Reporting Scale for evaluating grant data reporting from funding agencies.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the increasing representation of women in scientific fields, disparities in research funding allocation remain. This inequity deprives talented women researchers of necessary resources, limiting the diversity of perspectives and ideas, and contributes to the "scissor-shaped curve" seen in neuroscience, where women leave before obtaining senior positions. Data transparency and comprehensive reporting of information on grant winners and applicants, as well as reporting of gender and other intersecting demographics and key metrics, are crucial to effectively evaluate funding

Gender inequalities in health and wellbeing across the first two decades of life: an analysis of 40 low-income and middle-income countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

BACKGROUND: By adulthood, gender inequalities in health and wellbeing are apparent. Yet, the timing and nature of gender inequalities during childhood and adolescence are less clear. We describe the emergence of gender inequalities in health and wellbeing across the first two decades of life. METHODS: We focused on the 40 low-income and middle-income countries in Asia and the Pacific. A measurement framework was developed around four key domains of wellbeing across the first two decades: health, education and transition to employment, protection, and a safe environment. Specific measurement c

[Sex, gender, and evidence-based medicine : how to close research gaps ?].

Research continues to inadequately integrate gender and diversity, reflecting the longstanding model in which the male body has been considered the universal standard. To address these gaps, initiatives like the SAGER (Sex And Gender Equity in Research) and SAGER-swissethics guidelines have emerged, to encourage the integration of sex and gender into research, from the design to the dissemination of results. Clinical guidelines rarely include sex- or gender-specific recommendations. It is unclear whether this lack reflects the absence of differences or, conversely, a lack of data to establish

Gender inequality in the impact of climate shock on physical health and its spillover effect.

BACKGROUND: Physical health disparities between male and female constitute a significant yet underexplored manifestation of gender inequality, a challenge increasingly exacerbated by climate shock. METHODS: This paper explores the gender inequality in the impact of climate shock on physical health and its spillover effect. We develop a theoretical framework of intra-household resource allocation, and employ micro-level panel datasets matched with a climate physical risk dataset to estimate the impacts of climate shock using panel fixed-effect models. RESULTS: We find that climate shock signi
