Strategies for rehabilitation management with implants in patients with down syndrome: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Down Syndrome (DS), caused by an extra chromosome 21, has a prevalence of 24.7 per 10,000 live births in Chile, the highest in Latin America. Individuals with DS commonly present orofacial and dental anomalies, complicating oral health management. Many depend on removable prostheses, which represent challenges in hygiene, handling, and adaptation. Dental implants are a promising alternative, offering improved stability and functionality. However, successful rehabilitation requires addressing specific anatomical, physiological, and behavioral considerations. This scoping review comp

Independent frontal-system deficits in schizophrenia: cognitive, clinical, and adaptive implications.

This study examined whether frontal-system impairments in schizophrenia occur independently of one another and whether they have distinct implications for information processing, symptom severity, and adaptive functioning. We assessed 26 medication-free schizophrenic outpatients and 18 normal control subjects on eight frontally mediated tasks, semantic information processing, IQ, the BPRS, and long-term psychosocial adaptation. Schizophrenic subjects showed three types of deficits, which were uncorrelated with one another: (1) Executive dysfunction (inflexible problem solving) was related to d

Normal T and B Cell Responses Against SARS-CoV-2 in a Family With a Non-Functional Vitamin D Receptor: A Case Report.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has severely impacted daily life all over the world. Any measures to slow down the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and to decrease disease severity are highly requested. Recent studies have reported inverse correlations between plasma levels of vitamin D and susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 severity. Therefore, it has been proposed to supplement the general population with vitamin D to reduce the impact of COVID-19. However, by studying the course of COVID-19 and the immune response again

Granulomatous vasculitis. Wegener's granulomatosis and Churg-Strauss syndrome.

Wegener's granulomatosis and the Churg-Strauss syndrome are both syndromes that appear to begin with a phase of regionally limited symptomatology before they progress at unpredictable rate to a generalized phase characterized by symptoms of systemic vasculitis. The clinical features of atopy, peripheral blood eosinophilia, and tissue eosinophilia distinguish CSS from WG, with its typical necrotizing granulomatous respiratory tract lesions. Whereas in generalized WG with renal involvement the use of cyclophosphamide usually cannot be avoided, the generalized systemic vasculitis phase of CSS app

Generation of induced pluripotent stem cells from a patient with CHARGE syndrome with athymia, harboring a heterozygous mutation in CHD7.

CHARGE syndrome is a rare, complex congenital disorder affecting multiple organ systems, with CHD7 identified as its primary causative gene. Individuals with CHARGE syndrome can exhibit T cell immunodeficiency, which compromises adaptive immunity and increases susceptibility to infections. T cell immunodeficiency in CHARGE syndrome is largely attributed to thymic hypo/aplasia. In this study, we generated an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line from the blood of a 21-month-old female with CHARGE syndrome and athymia who carries a de novo CHD7 pathogenic variant, c.1366C > T (p.Q456*). [Specificities of carcinomas in adolescents and young adults].

Carcinomas are rare tumors of the adolescent-young adult (AYA) with a different spectrum from those of adults. The most common sites outside of the thyroid is the nasopharynx, salivary gland, colon-rectum and ovaries. If nasopharyngeal carcinoma or salivary gland tumors are good prognosis, others are more reserved prognosis, such as digestive carcinomas, gynecological or midline. The revelation modes are non-specific and depend on the location: mass, tumor syndrome, pain, impaired general condition. The unusual of pediatric carcinomas led to propose a systematic oncogenetic exploration. The me

Innovative approaches for vaccine trials as a key component of pandemic preparedness - a white paper.

BACKGROUND: WHO postulates the application of adaptive design features in the global clinical trial ecosystem. However, the adaptive platform trial (APT) methodology has not been widely adopted in clinical research on vaccines. METHODS: The VACCELERATE Consortium organized a two-day workshop to discuss the applicability of APT methodology in vaccine trials under non-pandemic as well as pandemic conditions. Core aspects of the discussions are summarized in this article. RESULTS: An "ever-warm" APT appears ideally suited to improve efficiency and speed of vaccine research. Continuous learning

[Psychological stress in oncology: the role of glucocorticoids].

During the last years, the correlations between biological processes, psychological adjustment and stress disorders have received increasing attention and a growing body of research results has been published in the general literature. In the realm of psycho-oncology, however, conceptual models on this topic and studies aimed at their validation have remained relatively scanty. On the basis of our observations and available literature in the field of post-traumatic and depressive stress disorders in oncology, we have proposed to apply the concept of allostatic load to the study and understandi

Inhibition of Fgf signaling in short bowel syndrome increases weight loss and epithelial proliferation.

BACKGROUND: Signaling by fibroblast growth factor is critical for epithelial proliferation, differentiation, and the development of many organs, including the intestine. Fibroblast growth factor 10 and fibroblast growth factor 2c are upregulated after massive bowel resection during intestinal adaptation. This pathway is conserved highly. We hypothesized that inhibition of fibroblast growth factor signaling would impair intestinal adaptation in the zebrafish model of short bowel syndrome and allow insight into the negative regulation of this pathway. METHODS: Short bowel syndrome equivalent to

Motion aftereffect transfer in the monofixation syndrome.

If one adapts to a moving repetitive stimulus of stripes that is suddenly stopped, the stripes will appear to move backward. This apparent backward motion is the motion aftereffect (MAE), and its duration is a measure of its magnitude. If one eye adapts to the moving stimulus and the other eye experiences the aftereffect to the stationary stimulus, the aftereffect has been transferred from one eye to the other and is termed the interocular transfer of the MAE. Experimental evidence indicates that the degree of MAE transfer correlates with clinical binocularity. This study compares the MAE tran

Event-related potential (ERP) markers of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and associated psychosis.

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is a multisystemic disorder characterized by a wide range of clinical features, ranging from life-threatening to less severe conditions. One-third of individuals with the deletion live with mild to moderate intellectual disability; approximately 60% meet criteria for at least one psychiatric condition.22q11.2DS has become an important model for several medical, developmental, and psychiatric disorders. We have been particularly interested in understanding the risk for psychosis in this population: Approximately 30% of the individuals with the deletion go o

Health and social outcomes in adults with Williams syndrome: findings from cross-sectional and longitudinal cohorts.

Previous studies have investigated trajectories of cognitive, language and adaptive functioning in Williams syndrome (WS) but little is known about how other aspects of the Williams syndrome behavioural phenotype change across the life-span. Therefore, the present study examined age associated changes in a number of different domains of functioning in adults with WS. Semi-structured interviews and standardized assessments of physical health, educational and occupational levels, self-care and independence, social interactions, and behavioural difficulties were conducted with adults with WS and

Antenatal glucocorticoid treatment of the growth-restricted fetus: benefit or cost?

Women at risk of preterm labor are commonly treated with antenatal glucocorticoids to reduce neonatal complications, including respiratory distress syndrome. Despite the benefits of antenatal glucocorticoid for neonatal lung function, they are associated with negative cardiovascular outcomes. Among this population, there is a group of intrauterine growth-restricted fetuses in which substrate supply is reduced and these fetuses must undergo a range of cardiovascular adaptations to survive. Interestingly, the cardiovascular changes caused by antenatal glucocorticoid in normally grown fetuses are

Growing Older With a Physical Disability: A Special Application of the Successful Aging Paradigm.

OBJECTIVES: In the United States, the average age of people living with early-acquired physical disabilities is increasing. This cohort is said to be aging with disability and represents a unique population among older adults. Given recent policy efforts designed to merge aging and disability services, it is critical that models of "successful aging" include and are relevant to this population. However, many current definitions of successful aging emphasize avoidance of disability and high levels of physical function as necessary to well-being. METHOD: In 9 focus groups, we examined perspecti
