Emission rates of gaseous monomethylmercury (CH(3)Hg(II)), as well as elemental mercury (Hg(0)) and dimethylmercury [(CH(3))(2)Hg(II)], were determined in Hg-contaminated water-sediment microcosms (duplicates of three treatments) by gaseous species-specific isotope dilution analysis (SSIDA). Incubation of approximately 500 g (wet mass) of sediments containing 30 mumol of ambient Hg with an addition of 2.6 mumol of (201)Hg(II) tracer resulted in average (n = 6) gaseous emissions of 84 +/- 26, 100 +/- 37, and 830 +/- 380 pmol of ambient CH(3)Hg(II), CH(3)(201)Hg(II), and (201)Hg(0), respectively

Mercury speciation, controls on methylmercury (MeHg) production, and bed sediment-pore water partitioning of total Hg (THg) and MeHg were examined in bed sediment from eight geochemically diverse streams where atmospheric deposition was the predominant Hg input. Across all streams, sediment THg concentrations were best described as a combined function of sediment percent fines (%fines; particles < 63 microm) and organic content. MeHg concentrations were best described as a combined function of organic content and the activity of the Hg(II)-methylating microbial community and were comparable to

Melita plumulosa is an epibenthic, detritivorous amphipod native to eastern Australia that has been adopted as a test organism for toxicity evaluations of contaminated estuarine sediments. In the present study, a 13-d amphipod reproduction test was developed that encompasses gametogenesis, fertilization, and embryo development before hatching. The primary endpoints for the test are fecundity (measured as the number of embryos per individual surviving female) and a fecundity index (fecundity multiplied by the stage of embryo development). This new test has been employed to scrutinize the sedime

In 2001, the municipality of Lausanne extended the outlet pipe of the sewage treatment plant into the Bay of Vidy (Lake Geneva, Switzerland) as a measure to reduce bacterial water pollution and sediment contamination close to the lake beaches. The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of this measure. Lake bottom sediments were collected and analyzed for grain size, organic matter, organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals and hydrophobic organic compounds to evaluate their concentration and spatial distribution. Our results demonstrate that, compared to results obtained b

Recent studies indicate significant amounts of mercury (Hg) are annually transported into the San Francisco Bay-Delta (Bay-Delta) as a result of historic gold and Hg mining activities. We examined temporal and spatial variation in concentrations of total Hg (Hg(T)) and monomethylmercury (MMHg) in surficial sediments of various ecosystem types in the Bay-Delta. We sampled surficial sediments across the Bay-Delta system and found Hg(T) sediment concentrations in the central Delta were generally 100-200 ng g(-1) and increased westward through Suisun Bay to 250-350 ng g(-1). MMHg concentrations in

The speciation and extent of migration of adsorbed Pb and Cd in natural surface coatings (NSCs) were investigated using sequential extraction procedure to provide an understanding of distribution of the adsorbed Pb and Cd. Extractions were conducted on NSCs before and after Pb and Cd adsorption treatment under controlled laboratory conditions with initial Pb and Cd concentrations ranging from 0.2-2.5 mol/l. The Langmuir adsorption isotherms were applied to estimate equilibrium coefficients of Pb and Cd adsorption to NSCs components. The results showed that 58.50% of adsorbed Pb in average exis

Victoria Harbour has received substantial loadings of pollutants from industrial and municipal wastewater discharged since the 1950s. Inputs of contaminants have declined dramatically during the last two decades as a result of better controls at the source and improved wastewater treatment facilities. To assess the spatial and temporal changes of metal contaminants in sediments in Victoria Harbour, core and grab sediments were collected. The central harbour areas were generally contaminated with heavy metals. The spatial distribution of trace metals can probably be attributed to the proximity

Since 1985, pathologists at Cornell University have investigated the causes of lesions in freshwater fish throughout New York waters in order to clarify possible impairment of fish health by environmental contaminants. Fishermen and biologists alerted us to several relatively protected reservoirs and ponds in which we have found no evidence of elevated levels of anthropogenic environmental contaminants but in which up to 100% of brown bullheads exhibited skin neoplasia. Complete necropsies and histologic study revealed that over 30% of mature brown bullheads from some of these sites had benign

Disposal options for salty and selenium-laden agricultural drainage sediments are needed to protect the agricultural ecosystem in Central California. Thus, a 7-year pilot-scale field study evaluated the effects of disposing Se-laden drainage sediment onto soil that was planted with either salado grass (Sporobolus airoides 'salado') or cordgrass (Spartina patens 'Flageo'), or on soil left bare with and without irrigation. Significant decreases in salinity and water-extractable and total soil Se concentrations were observed in all treatments to a depth 30 cm, while water extractable Se and salin

The deep microbial biosphere is a vast ecosystem extending kilometers beneath Earth's surface in terrestrial rocks, aquifers, marine sediments, and oceanic crust. Blocked from sunlight, and often severely limited in organic carbon and oxygen, these environments host microorganisms sustained by energy sources such as hydrogen gas, reduced metals, and sulfur compounds. Over the past few decades, advances in sampling, cultivation-independent methods, and deep-sea drilling have revealed diverse bacterial, archaeal, and eukaryotic life in the subsurface, including still poorly understood lineages w

Quagga (QM) and zebra (ZM) mussels (Dreissena bugensis and Dreissena polymorpha) are invasive bivalves forming freshwater fouling communities of high economic and environmental importance in Europe and North America. They may experience immersion in soft sediments by sedimenting particles (mostly at deeper locations or areas with high hydrodynamic activity) or while attached to burrowing unionid mussels. On the other hand, mussels located near the water surface may encounter water level decreases and air exposure during droughts. We experimentally tested mussel survival and behavioral response

This study investigated the bacterial composition in surface sediments (0-5 cm) of Qingshitan Reservoir to elucidate their ecosystem functions in response to anthropogenic disturbances. Samples were collected in July 2023 from eight ecological points representing varying disturbance levels. High-throughput sequencing revealed significant variations in bacterial community structure. Sediments from the upstream cage aquaculture area (heavily disturbed) exhibited the highest bacterial richness, diversity, and evenness, while midstream and downstream areas (lightly disturbed) showed reduced divers

The Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary, marked by the Chicxulub impact ejecta layer has a global distribution, with distal, intermediate and proximal boundary sections of distinct mineralogy, geochemistry and stratigraphy. Distal sections show a thin double-layer of spherulites and clay, enriched in platinum group elements and impact minerals. Proximal boundary sections around the Gulf of Mexico-Caribbean Sea are thicker, with clastic tsunami and debris flow deposits and the fireball layer in between the spherulitic and clay layers. Impact-induced disturbance and stratigraphic gaps have limited the

The Crawford Lake biosphere evolved in response to both natural and anthropogenic stressors since water filled this karstic basin on the Niagara Escarpment. It was substantially impacted by hydrologic/limnological changes attributed to environmental conditions that define the Northgrippian and Meghalayan Ages, but the greatest impact was human activity in its small catchment. Cultural eutrophication from Indigenous agriculture in the late 13th century altered the lake chemistry, promoting seasonal precipitation of calcite that allows sub-annual resolution. Global signatures of the Great Accele

The microbial cycling of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) constitutes a crucial component of the global sulfur cycle, influencing climate regulation through the release of climate-active gases. Since DMSP production has historically been attributed to planktonic algae, research on its cycling has consequently centered on the surface ocean. However, the continuous discovery of bacterial DMSP synthesis genes (dsyB, mmtN, and dsyGD) has confirmed that the DMSP/DMS cycling process may also exist in the aphotic deep-sea environment. Further supporting this, the recently

Heavy metal pollution is a major environmental concern in coastal ecosystems, particularly in urban estuarine systems where anthropogenic activities lead to the accumulation of toxic metals in sediments and water bodies. The urgent need to identify microorganisms capable of tolerating and remediating heavy metal contamination has driven interest in environmentally adapted bacterial strains. In the present study, a bacterial strain, Bacillus enclensis ABF750, was isolated from sediment collected from the highly polluted Versova Creek, Mumbai, India, and its adaptive potential was investigated u

Microplastics (MPs), an emerging global pollutant, create a distinct "plastisphere" niche on their surfaces in coastal wetlands, yet its effects on microbial community structure and assembly remain poorly understood. Through in situ incubation, high-throughput sequencing, and ecological modeling, this study systematically revealed differences in microbial community structure, function, and assembly mechanisms between the plastisphere and surrounding sediment, and further examined the modulating roles of vegetation type (vegetated P site vs. bare I site) and polymer degradability (traditional:

The organic booster biocide DCOIT (4,5-dichloro-2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one) is widely used in marine antifouling systems, yet its ecological impacts on sediment microbiomes remain poorly understood. Here, we integrated absolute quantitative 16S rRNA gene sequencing, metagenomics, and enzyme activity assays to examine microbial responses to DCOIT exposure (0-50 μg/g sediment) over 30 days. DCOIT induced oxidative stress and bioenergetic impairment, accompanied by reduced microbial activity and inhibition of key enzyme-mediated processes involved in organic matter turnover and nitrogen trans

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are persistent organic pollutants that pose ecological risks to marine ecosystems. Their impacts on bacterial communities and environmental fate remain poorly understood. In this study, SCCP exposure significantly altered sediment bacterial diversity and composition, enriching key genera such as Halomonas, Pseudomonas, and Marinobacter. Six SCCP-degrading strains from these genera were isolated. Whole-genome and transcriptomic analyses identified key functional genes involved in 1,2,5,6,9,10-hexachlorodecane degradation, including oxidative stress resp

Coastal ecosystems are increasingly threatened by climate change and anthropogenic pressures, which can disrupt microbial communities and favor the emergence of pathogenic organisms. In this study, we applied metagenomic analysis to characterize fungal communities in sediment samples from an urban mangrove subjected to environmental stress. The results revealed a fungal community with reduced richness-28% lower than expected for similar ecosystems-likely linked to physicochemical changes such as heavy metal accumulation, acidic pH, and eutrophication, all typical of urbanized coastal areas.
