Investigating the genetic basis of susceptibility to amoebic gill disease and idiopathic gill lesions in Atlantic salmon populations using field data.

BACKGROUND: Gill-related morbidity and mortality have become a major concern to the Atlantic salmon industry worldwide. Understanding the genetic mechanisms underlying susceptibility to gill diseases or lesions can help guide mitigation efforts. Genome-wide association analysis was conducted on gill scores from two large cohorts of Atlantic salmon populations, reared in Norway and Canada, that were phenotyped during amoebic gill disease (AGD) outbreaks and at harvest (referred to as idiopathic gill lesions (IGL)), respectively. RESULTS: Whereas one novel quantitative trait locus (QTL) region

Ultrastructural examination of the host inflammatory response within gills of netpen reared chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) with Microsporidial Gill Disease.

The sequence of host changes following the rupture of spore-laden xenomas of the microsporidian Loma salmonae during Microsporidial Gill Disease of Salmon was deduced from ultrastructural examination of the gills of naturally infected, moribund, chinook salmon from a commercial aquaculture site. The gills contained many stages of parasite development suggesting fish were chronically exposed to the parasite. Intact xenomas were generally found beneath the endothelium in arteries and arterioles and were encapsulated by a layer of collagen containing fibroblasts sometimes joined by desmosomes. Xe…

Antioxidant potential and genomic adaptation of Cetobacterium ceti MaLMAid0298 from the gills of Sebastiscus marmoratus.

Cetobacterium species are common members of fish-associated microbiomes and have been reported from diverse hosts, ranging from freshwater fishes such as carp and tilapia to marine sciaenids. However, their genomic characteristics and roles in oxidative stress defense remain poorly understood. In this study, we present a comprehensive characterization of Cetobacterium ceti strain MaLMAid0298, isolated from gill of the false kelpfish Sebastiscus marmoratus. A high-quality complete genome was assembled using a hybrid approach combining Illumina and Nanopore sequencing, and phylogenomic analysis

Salinity-responsive histone PTMs identified in the gills and gonads of Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus).

BACKGROUND: Histone post-translational modifications (PTMs) are epigenetic marks that can be induced by environmental stress and elicit heritable patterns of gene expression. To investigate this process in an ecological context, we characterized the influence of salinity stress on histone PTMs within the gills, kidney, and testes of Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus). A total of 221 histone PTMs were quantified in each tissue sample and compared between freshwater-adapted fish exposed to salinity treatments that varied in intensity and duration. RESULTS: Four salinity-responsive his…

Transcriptome profiling of triploid Crassostrea gigas gills indicates the host immune mechanism against bacterial infection.

As an important member of global aquaculture, oysters (Crassostrea gigas) have significant economic value. With the development of commercial aquaculture, the frequent occurrence of diseases caused by Vibrio alginolyticus has become a hindrance to high-density aquaculture. Gill tissue, as an important component of immune system of the oysters, plays the key point in the face of invasion by foreign substances. Compared to the diploid oyster, the triploid oyster presents a higher growth rate and lower growth investment, making it a more ideal model for studying oyster immune defense. In this stu

Dibutyl phthalate disrupts energy metabolism and morphology in the gills and induces hepatotoxicity in zebrafish.

This study investigated the acute effects of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) exposure on energy metabolism and gill histology in zebrafish (Danio rerio). The in vitro incubation of gill tissue with 10 μM DBP for 60 min altered tissue energy supply, as shown by decreased lactate content and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity. Higher concentrations of DBP (100 μM and 1 mM) increased lactate content and LDH activity; however, they blocked glucose uptake, depleted the glycogen content in cellular stores, and induced injury to the gills, as measured by LDH release to the extracellular medium. In addition…

Behavioral alterations and gills damage in Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to an environmental concentration of delorazepam.

Psychoactive compounds, and benzodiazepines (BZPs) in particular, represent an important class of emerging pollutants due to their large (ab … osure tests. Possible cytotoxic activity was also investigated by analyzing valve abductor muscles, gills histology, and correlated oxygen consumption. Results demonstrate negative effects on mussel behavior, interference with metabolism, and alteration of gill morphology and protein content. In conclusion, delorazepam confirms its toxicity to aquatic e …

Sindiplozoon coreius n. sp. (Monogenea: Diplozoidae) from the gills of Coreius guichenoti (Cyprinidae) in China.

Sindiplozoon coreius n. sp. is described from the gills of Coreius guichenoti in Sichuan province, China. There is a smooth tegument and a cup-like widened area in the posterior part of the worm body, which are particular features of the genus Sindiplozoon. There are no branched intestinal caeca before the widened area, but some branches reach the fourth clamp in the hind body; there was no cross striation on the anterior arch of the anterior clamp jaw and medial part of the posterior jaw, which are distinguished from the other species in Sindiplozoon. In addition, S. coreius n. sp. shared the…

Histopathological biomarkers in gills and liver of Oreochromis niloticus from polluted wetland environments, Saudi Arabia.

Fish live in direct contact with their immediate external environment and, therefore, are highly vulnerable to aquatic pollutants. In this study, Oreochromis niloticus were caught at three different sites in Al-Hassa irrigation channels, namely Al-Jawhariya, Um-Sabah and Al-Khadoud. The histological changes in gills and liver were detected microscopically and evaluated with semi-quantitative analyses. Also, heavy metals have been determined in the water samples in these sites. Results showed that all sites were polluted by different kinds of heavy metals. Cd and Pb were mostly detected at conc…

Effects of nanoparticles in Mytilus edulis gills and hepatopancreas - a new threat to marine life?

Every day new extraordinary properties of nanoparticles (a billionth of a meter) are discovered and worldwide millions are invested into nanotechnology and nanomaterials. Risks to marine organisms are still not fully understood and biomarkers to detect health effects are not implemented, yet. We used the filter feeding blue mussel as a model to analyse uptake and effects of nanoparticles from glass wool, a new absorbent material suggested for use in floating oil spill barriers. In both, gills and hepatopancreas we analysed uptake of nanomaterials by transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM) in uns…

A matter of potential concern: natural organic matter alters the electrical properties of fish gills.

Natural organic matter (NOM) is an important constituent of aquatic environments; however, its influence on aquatic biota remains poorly stu … We argue that NOM has direct actions on the ionic transport and/or permeability properties of fish gills. While NOM effects on the bioavailability of contaminants are well-known, NOM actions on such fundamental physiological properties of the gills have previously been overlooked. These may be of comparable or greater magnitude than commonly reported f …

Trout granulomatous virus (TGV) infection is associated with disruption of gill morphology, endothelial damage, and local gill immune responses in rainbow trout.

Trout Granulomatous Virus (TGV) is an emerging viral pathogen associated with chronic infections in adult farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). TGV infection was first described to be associated with the formation of granulomas in the liver and heart of infected trout, while gill pallor was a common gross sign of the disease. The goal of the present study was to characterize the histopathological changes and immune responses that occur in the gills of farmed rainbow trout during a natural TGV infection. Histopathological examination revealed widespread damage in the gill system of clinic…

Effects of gill abrasion and experimental infection with Tenacibaculum maritimum on the respiratory physiology of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar affected by amoebic gill disease.

The effects of gill abrasion and experimental infection with Tenacibaculum maritimum were assessed in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar with under … e and unabraded, uninoculated controls showing the lowest overall mortality rate. Fish with abraded gills tended to show reduced P(a)O2 and lower C(a)O2 compared with unabraded fish. Infection with T. maritimum had no effect on P(a)O2 or C(a)O2. All fish showed an initial alkalosis at 24 h post-surgery/inoculation which was more pronounced in fish inocu …

Convulsive tic disorder georges gilles de la tourette, guinon and grasset on the phenomenology and psychopathology of gilles de la tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette gained eponymous fame when he described nine cases of multiple tics, coprolalia and echolalia, and later he, Guinon and Grasset were the first to document the psychopathology of the Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. In particular, they noted the association between obsessional thoughts and behaviours and the tic disorder. In this paper we present the first English translations of their works referring to the psychopathology, comparing and contrasting their ideas to current concepts.

Freshwater browning as a hidden threat - Transcriptomic responses in fish gills exposed to fulvic acid.

Human activities and climate change have significantly increased humic substances in freshwater ecosystems over the last few decades. This increase is particularly concerning during seasonal changes or after heavy rainfall, when concentrations can easily increase up to tenfold. This phenomenon, known as "browning," has unknown consequences for aquatic organisms. This study is the first to determine the effects of increasing humic substance concentrations on the transcriptomic and structural responses in the gills of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Overall, 27 genes mainly involved in xeno…
