The binding of ten biotin-coupled lectins with different carbohydrate specificities to exfoliative material and neighbouring tissues was studied in 16 formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded human eyes. Eight of the eyes were exfoliation positive while the rest were exfoliation negative. Exfoliative material reacted intensely with Lens culinaris (LCA), Canavalia ensiformis (ConA) and Ricinus communis (RCA-I) agglutinins. Lectin binding patterns in normal human skin were studied using five different biotinyl lectins and avidin-horseradish peroxidase. The staining pattern was specific for each lectin. The biosynthesis of corneal epithelial proteins and glycoconjugates and their response to vitamin A were measured in vitamin A-deficient and normal rats. The synthesis of specific high-molecular-weight epithelial glycoconjugates was directly related to the levels of vitamin A administered. Protein synthesis, however, remained unaltered. Since vitamin A is known to reverse the keratinization process, the vitamin A-regulated high-molecular-weight glycoconjugates may play a role in modulating the expression of the keratinizing phenotype.

Carbohydrate-derived molecular gelators have found many practical applications as soft materials. To better understand the structure and molecular gelation relationship and further explore the applications of sugar-based gelators, we designed and synthesized eight trimeric branched sugar triazole derivatives and studied their self-assembling properties.
