Epidemiology of injuries in elite Women's Artistic Gymnastics: a retrospective analysis of six seasons.

BACKGROUND: Women's Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) is a sport well known for requiring a heavy and difficult training load from a younger age to reach a high level of performance. This also is associated with an injury risk. Epidemiological studies are thus needed to improve injury prevention strategies. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the injury epidemiology in French high-level WAG. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of injury data collected prospectively over six seasons from the 2014-2015 season to the 2019-2020 season among French high-level Women's Artistic Gymnasts from the Fr…

Effect of arm movement on balance performance in children: role of expertise in gymnastics.

OBJECTIVE: Studies have shown that balance performance is better in gymnasts compared to age-/sex-matched controls and further studies revealed superior performance when arms were free to move during assessment of balance. However, it is unknown whether free arm movement during balance testing differentially affects balance performance with respect to sports expertise (i.e., gymnasts are less affected than age-/sex-matched controls). Therefore, we investigated the effect of arm movement on balance performance in young female gymnasts compared to age-/sex-matched controls while performing balan

"It's Always the Judge's Fault": Attention, Emotion Recognition, and Expertise in Rhythmic Gymnastics Assessment.

In many sports, such as figure skating or gymnastics, the outcome of a performance does not rely exclusively on objective measurements, but on more subjective cues. Judges need high attentional capacities to process visual information and overcome fatigue. Also their emotion recognition abilities might have an effect in detecting errors and making a more accurate assessment. Moreover, the scoring given by judges could be also influenced by their level of expertise. This study aims to assess how rhythmic gymnastics judges' emotion recognition and attentional abilities influence accuracy of perf…

Kinematic Analysis of Free Vertical Split with 720° Turn in Elite Chinese Rhythmic Gymnastics.

This study investigates the kinematic characteristics of the free vertical split with 720° turn (C 807). C 807 is the international designation in rhythmic gymnastics for a free vertical split with a 720° turn. This research holds significant importance in enhancing the technical proficiency of gymnasts and reducing their risk of injury. Eight national-level female gymnasts (age = 20 ± 3 years) performed the C 807. Kinematic data were collected using a 3D motion capture system. The movement was divided into four phases, and Visual 3D (V6.0, CMotion, Germantown, MD, USA) software was used for d…

Evaluation of head kinematics experienced during common skill progression pathways in Women's Artistic Gymnastics.

This study aimed to evaluate head kinematics experienced during skill progression pathways in Women's Artistic Gymnastics to inform post-concussion return to gymnastics protocols. A return to gymnastics framework, consisting of seven skill progression pathways, was developed. Twelve gymnasts were instrumented with mouthpiece sensors and performed two trials of each skill, if able. Sensors recorded data at 100 Hz and skill segments were extracted using time-synchronised video. Peak resultant linear (PLA) and rotational acceleration (PRA), rotational velocity change index (ΔRV) and peak resultan…

Imaging findings of overuse wrist injuries in young artistic gymnasts.

Wrist pain is highly prevalent in young gymnasts. One of the causes is chronic overuse. Repetitive high-loading of the wrist during training on an immature skeleton affects the developing bony, cartilaginous, and tendinous structures. Overuse injuries include classic gymnast wrist, stress fractures of the radius or carpal bones, carpal boss, dorsal wrist impingement, triangular fibrocartilage complex tears, scapholunate diastasis or instability and various forms of tendinopathy and synovitis. These conditions tend to go underrecognized because symptoms are often nonspecific, and athletes tend

Musculoskeletal Pain in Gymnasts: A Retrospective Analysis on a Cohort of Professional Athletes.

Gymnastics athletes are exposed to a high risk of injury, but also of developing musculoskeletal pain. These data are still little investigated in the available scientific literature. An online survey was distributed to 79 professional athletes who practiced artistic and rhythmic gymnastics. The survey collected demographic and anthropometric data, information about the sport practice, the training sessions, the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain gymnastics-related, and lifestyle habits. Musculoskeletal pain had a high prevalence, involving 65 of 79 athletes (82.3%). A significant correlation …

Eating pathology in female gymnasts: potential risk and protective factors.

Although participation in sports that emphasize aestheticism, such as women's gymnastics, are associated with higher rates of eating pathology, little is known about the risk and protective factors involved in this process. We established and tested a model proposing that body surveillance and body shame are processes by which pubertal development and training may uniquely contribute to pathological eating by sampling 100 competitive female gymnasts via questionnaires. We further tested whether self-esteem moderated several model relationships. Results demonstrated that pubertal development wa…

Comparative study of elbow disorders in young high-performance gymnasts.

The study aimed to investigate the prognosis of osteochondral affection (e.g., osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), cartilage lesions, fractures and bone edema in the elbows of high-performance gymnasts (n=30) compared to prognosis results with athletes not undergoing excessive stress on the upper extremity (n=29). The study also tested a novel isotropic 3D-FSE-sequence (CUBE) technique as an early diagnostic modality. Standard protocol was used to conduct the MRI examinations, which were then compared to results from the CUBE - sequence. The gymnast group (p=0.012) presented a significantly highe

MRI findings of bilateral proximal radial physeal injury in a gymnast.

Recent advances in imaging techniques shed light on anatomical variants considered normal historically in medical literature. We present an 11-year-old gymnast with unilateral left elbow pain and unusual symmetrical radiographic findings of both elbows that initially raised the question of normal variant cleft epiphysis of the proximal radius. Further imaging with MRI demonstrated bilateral elbow injury that is likely repetitive and chronic rather than an anatomical variant. Post-treatment MRI showed improved changes with rest and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. These findings emp
