Fractures of the scaphoid bone are nowadays better known and treated. However, the types of fractures and fragment dislocations are not well described. The authors analysed 325 fresh and old scaphoid fractures and describe six basic types, clearly defined by location and direction of the fracture line. In fresh cases, the dislocation is mainly rotational. In older cases there is an additional bone resorption. The six basic types of fracture lines are demonstrated radiologically and the course of untreated cases is shown.

Giant cell tumor of bone uncommonly occurs in the bones of the hands and feet. Previous reports suggested that the giant cell tumors in these locations occur in younger patients, are more commonly multifocal, and are associated with a higher risk for local recurrence and pulmonary metastasis than those at the ends of the long bones. A review of our experience with 43 patients having giant cell tumors in small bones is presented. Radiologic and histologic comparison is made with aneurysmal bone cyst and giant cell reparative granuloma (giant cell lesion) of the small bones. Followup information

ObjectiveTo evaluate efficiency of a percutaneous opening-wedge osteotomy, realignment, and fixation for hand bone malunions.MethodsFrom November 2020 to November 2023, the patients with hand bone malunions were treated. Fracture angulation was assessed on X-rays or CT scans. Range of motion of the digits was assessed based on the total active motion scale. The scales were graded as excellent (100%), good (75%-99%), fair (50%-74%), and poor (<50%) based on the total active motion.ResultsThere were 47 patients (42 male and 5 female patients) with the mean age of 34 years (range, 17-58 years). PURPOSE: We investigated the growth of bones after lengthening to evaluate the effectiveness and usefulness of bone lengthening in congenital hand deficiencies.
METHODS: Bone lengthening was performed to treat congenital hand deficiencies including hypoplastic thumb, hypoplasia of the small finger, cleft hand, metacarpal synostosis, brachymetacarpia, symbrachydactyly, and amniotic band syndrome. A total of 15 patients (1-13 years old) underwent lengthening of 23 bones. The average of distraction was 10 mm. The mean follow-up period was 59 months. The length of the bones at follow-up evaluatio

Bone scintigraphy of the hands and wrists represents an important adjunct imaging technique that complements plain film radiographic examination. The use of the three-phase bone scan provides clinical information not only regarding osseous uptake but the blood flow and extravascular distribution of the radiotracer as well. Scintigraphic evaluation of the hands and wrists is employed in acute and chronic conditions. In the event of an equivocal or negative plain film, the bone scan can identify occult fractures. Of particular concern is the identification of scaphoid fractures due to the higher

We report on 37 patients with traumatic cysts and pseudoarthroses of the scaphoid, who were treated with Ender's scaphoid plate. Owing to technical errors there was no osseous healing in 4 cases (10.8%). The main advantage of this method is the brief immobilization period.

A 45-year-old woman complained of left wrist pain and swelling for two years accompanied by limited dorsiflexion. Plain X-rays revealed an abnormal bony mass in the carpal bones, further evaluated using computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Upon confirmation of the benign nature surgical excisional biopsy of the lesion, the histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation (BPOP). The patient has remained pain-free and actively involved in her routine for the past two years. BPOP, affecting the carpal bones of the hand, are exceptionally

Giant cell reparative granuloma (GCRG) usually occurs in the jaw, but a histologically identical lesion is occasionally seen in the small bones of the hands and feet. A 24-year-old man had GCRG involving the second metacarpal and the capitate. The involvement of a carpal bone and the presence of multiple lesions are unusual for this entity.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic and systemic inflammatory disorder. Conventional radiography, a widely available and cost-effective examination method, remains the standard of reference for the detection and quantification of joint involvement in RA. Fractal dimension (FD) of the trabecular bone structure has been proven to correlate with the bone's physical properties. The present study was designed to use fractal analysis to validate radiograph changes in the hand of RA patients. This study retrospectively evaluated the hand radiographs of 108 subjects. Fifty-four patients were sufferi

The purpose of this study is to analyse three different lengthening techniques used in 31 small bones for congenital malformations of the hand and foot: 15 metacarpals, 12 metatarsals, 1 foot stump and 3 spaces between a previously transplanted phalanx end of the carpus or the metacarpal. Progressive lengthening with an external fixator device was performed in 23 cases: the callus distraction (callotasis) technique was used in 15 cases, whereas in the other 8 cases the speed of lengthening was faster and the defect bridged with a bone graft as a second stage. In another eight cases, a one-stag

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: We retrospectively reviewed the experience of two Hand Units with progressive bone distraction lengthening, collecting 41 cases of hand skeleton lengthening for congenital malformations.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The Ilizarov callostasis method was used in 31 cases and in 10 cases bone union was reestablished at a second stage with an iliac graft (2 cases), vascularized metacarpal bone graft (one case), and vascularized (one case) or nonvascularized (3 cases) toe epiphysis. In the last three cases of index lengthening, the distal part was translocated to the tip of the third

Nine patients with enchondromas in the hand were treated by endoscopic curettage of the tumour without bone grafting. The procedure was performed on an out-patient basis using axillary block anaesthesia. New bone formation and remodelling of the lesions were observed in all patients. There were no postoperative fractures, infections, recurrences or other complications. Functional recovery was rapid. We conclude that endoscopic curettage without bone grafting is an effective treatment of enchondroma in the hand.
