Outbreak of an Emerging Recombinant of Myxoma Virus ha-MYXV in European Brown Hares (Lepus europaeus) in Austria.

Myxomatosis, caused by the myxoma virus (MYXV), is a severe disease primarily affecting European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), with very high case fatality rates. Historically, MYXV was introduced to Europe and Australia in the 1950s to control rabbit populations, becoming endemic and undergoing genetic adaptations. In 2018, a novel recombinant variant, hare-adapted MYXV (ha-MYXV), emerged in Spain, causing significant declines in Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis) populations. This study reports the first outbreak of ha-MYXV in Austria, severely affecting European brown hares (Lepus europaeu

Atypical myxomatosis in European rabbits is caused by the recombinant myxoma virus involved in species jumping into hares.

UNLABELLED: Myxoma virus (MYXV), a member of the Leporipoxvirus genus (species Leporipoxvirus myxoma; family Poxviridae ), causes a highly lethal disease known as myxomatosis in European rabbits. In late 2018, a new natural MYXV isolate, MYXV-Tol (a.k.a. hare MYXV; ha-MYXV), emerged and caused myxomatosis-like disease with high mortality in Iberian hares, European brown hares, and European rabbits. This variant contains an approximately 2.8-kb insertion of a recombination cassette within the M009L gene encoding four additional genes, including the C7-like host range gene, M159L . M159 is essen

Molecular survey on the occurrence of arthropod-borne pathogens in wild brown hares (Lepus europaeus) from Central Italy.

Data about the spreading of arthropod-borne pathogens among hare populations are very scant, so the aim of the present preliminary study was to investigate, through molecular analysis, the occurrence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Bartonella sp., Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Coxiella burnetii, Francisella tularensis, Leishmania spp. and piroplasms DNA in blood of 51 wild hares (Lepus europaeus) living in protected areas in Tuscany. All hares resulted negative for A. phagocytophilum, Bartonella sp., B. burgdorferi s.l., C. burnetii and F. tularensis. Five animals (9.8%) were positive for Lei

Influence of season of birth on onset of gonadotrophic and ovarian functions in young doe hares (Lepus europaeus).

The pituitary and ovarian responses to a monthly i.v. injection of 5 micrograms luteinizing-hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) were studied in three groups of young doe hares, born in January-February (group I), in April (group II) or at the end of the breeding season (August-September, group III). The LHRH injection was always followed by a release of LH and progesterone, which did not differ among the three groups at 3 months of age. The pituitary and ovarian responses to LHRH increased gradually from the age of 3 months in groups I and III and from the age of 9 months in group II. One female

Retrospective serological and molecular survey of myxoma or antigenically related virus in the Iberian hare, Lepus granatensis.

The 2018 outbreak of myxomatosis in the Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis) has been hypothesized to originate from a species jump of the rabbit-associated myxoma virus (MYXV), after natural recombination with an unknown poxvirus. Iberian hares were long considered resistant to myxomatosis as no prior outbreaks were reported. To provide insights into the emergence of this recombinant virus (ha-MYXV), we investigated serum samples from 451 Iberian hares collected over two time periods almost two decades apart, 1994-1999 and 2017-2019 for the presence of antibodies and MYXV-DNA. First, we screened

Cysticercosis by Taenia pisiformis in Brown Hare (Lepus europaeus) in Northern Italy: Epidemiologic and pathologic features.

In Northern Italy, a hastening of hare population decline was noticeable from 2008. In the same year hunters reported a sudden increase of hares infected by Taenia sp. larvae, whose morphology was consistent with T. pisiformis cysticerci. The aim of the survey was: i)to identify the parasites through morphological features and molecular techniques; ii)to quantify the prevalence and abundance of cysticerci in hunted hares; iii)to describe pathological aspects of parasite-induced lesions; iv)to evaluate the short-term trend of the infection comparing two different hunting seasons; v)to highlight

Molecular and phylogenetic analysis of the filarial nematode Micipsella numidica from the hare Lepus europaeus in Italy.

The genus Micipsella comprises three species of filariae to date identified in lagomorphs only, whereas the other genera belonging to the subfamily Splendidofilariinae are described as parasites of birds, reptiles and mammals. In the present study seven specimens of Micipsella numidica (Seurat, 1917), collected from the hare Lepus europaeus in Italy, were characterized genetically by molecular amplification of the mitochondrial genes (12S rDNA; cox1) and the 5S rDNA gene spacer region. Phylogenetic trees inferred using available sequences from filariae and those identified in this study eviden

Free blastocyst and implantation stages in the European brown hare: correlation between ultrasound and histological data.

The European brown hare (Lepus europaeus) is the only species with superconception, whereby the maternal reproductive tract hosts two sets of conceptuses at different developmental stages. The embryonic development of the hare has not yet been described. To understand the mechanism of superconception, we studied oviduct transport and implantation stages by embryo flushing and live high-resolution ultrasound. Ultrasound data of implantation stages is correlated with histology. In the oviduct, a mucin coat is deposited on the zona pellucida. The blastocysts enter the uterine horns on Day 5, 1 da

Detection of Francisella tularensis subsp. holarctica in a European brown hare (Lepus europaeus) in Thuringia, Germany.

The isolation of Francisella tularensis subsp. holarctica biovar II (strain 06T0001) from a European brown hare (Lepus europaeus) from Thuringia, Germany, is described for the first time. Identification of the microorganism was carried out by phenotypic characterisation, partial sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and specific PCR using the primers TUL4-435/TUL4-863 and FtC1/FtC4. The epidemiology of tularemia in Germany is discussed and a risk assessment for humans is made.

Tick-borne pathogens in Finnish wildlife: The role of non-native raccoon dog and European hare.

The role of different host species in the circulation dynamics of tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) in northern ecosystems remains insufficiently characterized, despite the widespread distribution of these pathogens in European wildlife. In particular, the contribution of medium-sized mammals, including non-native species, to TBP circulation is poorly understood. We screened 446 skin samples from nine wildlife species in Finland for multiple zoonotic TBPs to assess pathogen occurrence across host species with particular emphasis on the invasive raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) and non-native E

Pediatric Meningoencephalitis Cluster Caused by Snowshoe Hare Virus, Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, 2024.

Snowshoe hare virus (SSHV) is an arbovirus in the California serogroup known to circulate throughout Canada and northern latitudes of the United States. The clinical spectrum of SSHV infection ranges from asymptomatic or mild febrile illness to neuroinvasive disease; neuroinvasive disease occurs more often in children and young adults. We describe a cluster of confirmed and probable SSHV meningoencephalitis cases in 3 children from Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, in the summer of 2024. We highlight the shared epidemiology, clinical manifestations, serologic diagnostic methods, and outcomes

"Till death do us apart": The common destiny of brown hare and its parasite community.

Although parasites may threaten individual hosts' survival and reproduction, their role as an essential part of ecosystem functioning and biodiversity has been recognized. In Northern Italy, the hare population has evidently declined since 2008. This paper aims to assess the relationship between host demographic trends and helminth parasite community diversity in a two-year survey in Northern Italy to evaluate the impact of parasites on hosts and confirm the hypothesis that endangered host populations are poor in parasites. In 2013 and 2015 the viscera of 54 and 61 hares legally hunted in agro

Position and histological structure of the testes in the brown hare (Lepus europaeus) during seasonal regression and recrudescence.

The position and histological structure of the testes of 33 brown hares (Lepus europaeus) were studied from July to December. From July to September, the testes were located in the scrotum; in October and November, in some animals, the testes were positioned more or less in the inguinal canal towards the abdominal cavity, and in December none of the investigated animals had testes located in the scrotum. Testes were weighed and a quantitative analysis of tissue components was performed: the diameter of the seminiferous tubules, the depth of the seminiferous epithelium, the thickness of the tun

Fleas, lice and mites on scrub hares (Lepus saxatilis) in northern and eastern Transvaal and in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Fleas, lice and mites were collected from 24 and 120 scrub hares at Pafuri and Skukuza, Northern and Eastern Transvaal, respectively, in the Kruger National Park, and from 34 scrub hares in the Hluhluwe region, north-eastern KwaZulu-Natal. Ctenocephalides felis damarensis, the only flea recovered, reached peak burdens on the hares at each locality during late winter or spring. Juvenile hares harboured significantly fewer fleas than did adult animals. The lice Haemodipsus lyriocephalus and Haemodipsus setoni were collected from hares at each locality, with H. setoni generally being the most abu

Age and spatial effects of Eimeria spp. infections in European hare (Lepus europaeus) killed by vehicle collisions.

Risk factors for Eimeria infections are well documented in farm and pet animals, but studies focusing on wildlife species are less common. This research aimed to investigate the impact of selected demographic and environmental factors on the prevalence of Eimeria in the European hare (Lepus europaeus). Additionally, we analysed whether Eimeria infection affected the behaviour of hares by examining the relationship between infection status and the likelihood of a hare being killed by a vehicle at a hotspot for road mortality. Between 11 February 2022 and 24 June 2024, we collected 22 hare carca
