Advancing cross-sectoral data linkage to understand and address the health impacts of social exclusion: Challenges and potential solutions.

The use of administrative health data for research, monitoring, and quality improvement has proliferated in recent decades, leading to improvements in health across many disease areas and across the life course. However, not all populations are equally visible in administrative health data, and those that are less visible may be excluded from the benefits of associated research. Socially excluded populations - including the homeless, people with substance dependence, people involved in sex work, migrants or asylum seekers, and people with a history of incarceration - are typically characterise

The role of human papillomavirus vaccination in promoting delivery of other preventive and medical services.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents infrequently present for preventive health visits. The 3-dose human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine may result in increased health care visits and thus indirectly improve health services for teens. We examined whether other health services were delivered in conjunction with the second (HPV2) or third (HPV3) dose of the HPV vaccine. METHODS: We conducted a chart review for girls 9 to 20 years of age (n = 571) who received HPV2 or HPV3 within 4 months of its due date at any of 9 clinical sites. Analyses were limited to the 422 visits (72%) where HPV vaccine was specified as

The Patient-to-Prisoner Pipeline: The IMD Exclusion's Adverse Impact on Mass Incarceration in United States.

A component of the 1965 Medicaid Act, the Institutions for Mental Diseases ("IMD") Exclusion was supposed to be a remedy for the brutal, dysfunctional mental healthcare system run through state hospitals. In the years since Medicaid was created, the IMD Exclusion has instead barred thousands of those in need of intensive, inpatient treatment from receiving it. As a result, many severely mentally ill individuals are left without adequate care and without a home. They struggle in the street where they are otherized by those in their community and are susceptible to confrontational episodes with

The Department of Health Action Plan "Improving Services for People with Epilepsy": a significant advance or only a first step?

The government in England has supported the production of a number of reports on services for people with epilepsy over the last three or four decades but these have not come with any promise to provide resources or to achieve change. In recent years, the voluntary agencies have worked with government in undertaking some very worthwhile initiatives. The publication of the audit on epilepsy-related deaths and the commitment of the Chief Medical Officer have led to the production of an Action Plan entitled "Improving Services for People with Epilepsy". This Plan covers many of the key issues in

Integrating complementary and alternative medicine into mainstream healthcare services: the perspectives of health service managers.

BACKGROUND: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is increasingly included within mainstream integrative healthcare (IHC) services. Health service managers are key stakeholders central to ensuring effective integrative health care services. Yet, little research has specifically investigated the role or perspective of health service managers with regards to integrative health care services under their management. In response, this paper reports findings from an exploratory study focusing exclusively on the perspectives of health service managers of integrative health care services in Aus

Integrating Psychological Care into Pediatric Sports Medicine: Levels of Collaboration and Common Referral Concerns.

UNLABELLED: It is well established that psychological factors impact sport injuries, recovery, and return to sport among youth athletes. Medical associations and sport governing bodies have advocated for the assessment and intervention of mental health concerns among athletes. However, there is less research on methods of incorporating pediatric psychology services within sports medicine (SM) settings. By drawing on the framework of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration-Health Resources and Services Administration for understanding and implementing medical and behaviora…

A prospective examination of health care costs associated with posttraumatic stress disorder diagnostic status and symptom severity among veterans.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with increased health care costs; however, most studies exploring this association use PTSD diagnostic data in administrative records, which can contain inaccurate diagnostic information and be confounded by the quantity of service use. We used a diagnostic interview to determine PTSD diagnostic status and examined associations between PTSD symptom severity and health care costs and utilization, extracted from Veteran Health Administration (VHA) administrative databases. Using a nationwide longitudinal sample of U.S. veterans with and without

Comparing Unsheltered and Sheltered Homeless: Demographics, Health Services Use and Predictors of Health Services Use.

Secondary data obtained through the 2015 point-in-time homelessness count and an administrative health care utilization database was used to identify differences in demographic characteristics, health service use, and predictors of health service use among people experiencing unsheltered and sheltered homelessness. Compared to sheltered participants, unsheltered participants had higher proportions of males and Caucasians, were younger, were more likely to use any type of health service and ED services, and used significantly more of any health service and ED and outpatient services. Results al

Challenges of maternal mortality reduction and opportunities under National Rural Health Mission--a critical appraisal.

Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) continues to remain high in our country without showing any declining trend over a period of two decades. The proportions of maternal deaths contributed by direct obstetric causes have also remained more or less the same in rural areas. There is a strong need to improve coverage of antenatal care, promote institutional deliveries and provide emergency obstetric care. Delays occur in seeking care for obstetric complications and levels of 'met obstetric need' continue to be low in many parts of the country. Most of the First Referral Units (FRUs) and CHCs function
