Vitamin D deficiency and hyperglycemia in male rotating shift workers: A disturbed circadian rhythms influence.

BACKGROUND: Shift work is related to several negative impacts on the health of workers. This study aimed to evaluate the association between vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and hyperglycemia in shift workers. METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional study included male rotating shift workers in an iron ore extraction company. Participants were classified as VDD when 25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL for a healthy population and 25(OH)D < 30 ng/mL for groups at risk for VDD. Hyperglycemia was classified when fasting glucose ≥100 mg/dL or HbA1c ≥ 5.7%. Data were compared using chi-square analysis with Cramer's V as effec

Low serum indium levels induce expression disorders of some inflammatory factors.

OBJECTIVES: It has been reported that occupational exposure to indium compounds, including indium-tin oxide, can induce pulmonary inflammation resulting in serious indium lung disease. However, whether there is an early effect of indium exposure on inflammatory factor expression remains unclear. METHODS: Twenty indium-tin oxide processing workers and 15 healthy volunteers were recruited to measure serum indium levels, respiratory symptoms, pulmonary function, and serum inflammatory factor levels. RESULTS: Although low serum indium was detected in workers, lung abnormalities were not increase

Comparative effectiveness trial comparing MyPlate to calorie counting for mostly low-income Latino primary care patients of a federally qualified community health center: study design, baseline characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Primary care-based behavior change obesity treatment has long featured the Calorie restriction (CC), portion control approach. By contrast, the MyPlate-based obesity treatment approach encourages eating more high-satiety/high-satiation foods and requires no calorie-counting. This report describes study methods of a comparative effectiveness trial of CC versus MyPlate. It also describes baseline findings involving demographic characteristics and their associations with primary outcome measures and covariates, including satiety/satiation, dietary quality and acculturation. METHODS:

Mild cerebral ventriculomegaly in fetuses: characteristics and outcome.

OBJECTIVES: Ionizing radiation was known to cause disruption of cytoskeleton. However, the disorganization of the cytoskeleton leads to form microparticles (MP) that carry membrane and cytoplasmic constituents from their parent cells they are released from. Therefore, authors investigated the effect of the occupational exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation on MP levels. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The current study was conducted on 38 healthy medical workers occupationally exposed to low doses of ionizing radiation and 29 controls matched by gender, age, and smoking habits. The MP levels meas

Seroprevalence of COVID-19 Among Sanitation and Janitorial Workers During the Early Pandemic Phase in Saudi Arabia.

During the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in Saudi Arabia, sero-epidemiological studies focused primarily on healthcare workers and blood donors, leaving significant gaps in understanding risk factors for other vulnerable groups. This study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of COVID-19 among sanitation and janitorial workers. A total of 2,597 serum samples were analyzed, including 1,279 from sanitation and janitorial workers, collected from 1 April to 30 June 2020, and 1,318 samples collected from healthy blood donors from 1 April to 5 August 2020 as a control group. The seroprevalence

Odorant cues linked to social immunity induce lateralized antenna stimulation in honey bees (Apis mellifera L.).

Hygienic behaviour (HB) is a social immunity trait in honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) whereby workers detect, uncap and remove unhealthy brood, improving disease resistance in the colony. This is clearly economically valuable; however, the molecular mechanism behind it is not well understood. The freeze-killed brood (FKB) assay is the conventional method of HB selection, so we compared odour profiles of FKB and live brood to find candidate HB-inducing odours. Surprisingly, we found that significantly more brood pheromone (β-ocimene) was released from FKB. β-ocimene abundance also positively cor
