Central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) tests in a school-age hearing screening programme - analysis of 76,429 children.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Hearing disorders among school-age children are a current concern. Continuing studies have been performed in Poland since 2008, and on 2 December 2011 the EU Council adopted Conclusions on the Early Detection and Treatment of Communication Disorders in Children, Including the Use of e-Health Tools and innovative Solutions. The discussion now focuses not only on the efficacy of hearing screening programmes in schoolchildren, but what should be its general aim and what tests it should include? This paper makes the case that it is important to include central auditory

Novel approach to select genes from RMA normalized microarray data using functional hearing tests in aging mice.

UNLABELLED: Presbycusis - age-related hearing loss - is the number one communicative disorder and one of the top three chronic medical condition of our aged population. High-throughput technologies potentially can be used to identify differentially expressed genes that may be better diagnostic and therapeutic targets for sensory and neural disorders. Here we analyzed gene expression for a set of GABA receptors in the cochlea of aging CBA mice using the Affymetrix GeneChip MOE430A. Functional phenotypic hearing measures were made, including auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds and disto

Potential overestimation of cognitive impairment because of hearing loss: impact of test modalities on cognitive test scores.

OBJECTIVE: Hearing impairment in older adults may affect cognitive function and increase the risk of dementia. Most cognitive tests are delivered auditorily, and individuals with hearing loss may fail to hear verbal instructions. Greater listening difficulty and fatigue in acoustic conditions may impact test performance. This study aimed to examine the effect of decreased audibility on cognitive screening test performance in older adults. METHOD: Older adults (n = 63) with different levels of hearing loss completed a standard auditory Mini-Mental State Examination test and a written version o

The Chinese Zodiac-in-Noise Test: An Internet-Based Speech-in-Noise Test for Large-Scale Hearing Screening.

OBJECTIVES: Motivated by the growing need for hearing screening in China, the present study has two objectives. First, to develop and validate a new test, called the Chinese Zodiac-in-noise (ZIN) test, for large-scale hearing screening in China. Second, to conduct a large-scale remote hearing screening in China, using the ZIN test developed. DESIGN: The ZIN test was developed following a similar procedure as the digits-in-noise test but emphasizes the importance of consonant recognition by employing the 12 zodiac animals in traditional Chinese culture as speech materials. It measures the spee

Hearing Loss in the Elderly: Is the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly - Screening Version Effective in Diagnosis When Compared to the Audiometric Test?

Introduction  Hearing losses inherent to the natural process of aging represent today a major public health issue, despite the little attention that their adequate care still receives. Early recognition and proper management of these shortcomings can significantly improve hearing, as well as the patient's general quality of life, reducing the overall impact of this important and prevalent condition of the aging process. Objective  The aim of this research was to evaluate the accuracy of the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly - Screening Version (HHIE-S) in the diagnosis of hearing loss

Outcomes of clinical examination and genetic testing of 500 individuals with hearing loss evaluated through a genetics of hearing loss clinic.

Hearing loss (HL) occurs in approximately 2 out of every 1,000 births and is genetic in origin in approximately 50% of cases. This high incidence coupled with the increasing number of genes implicated in HL and the trend toward universal newborn screening led to the establishment of the Genetics of Hearing Loss Clinic at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to manage the diagnosis, genetic screening, and counseling of families with an affected child. To date 500 individuals have been evaluated from 1999 to 2004. To determine the cause of their HL and screen for syndromic forms of HL, indivi

Non-verbal dichotic listening: A new cognitive hearing test for dementia.

INTRODUCTION: Central hearing difficulties are a feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD) but not well captured by standard speech perception tests. METHODS: We developed a non-verbal dichotic listening test (NVDLT) based on everyday sounds, and compared this with a standard verbal dichotic listening test (VDLT) in 36 people with primary progressive aphasia (PPA), 18 with typical AD (tAD), 6 with right temporal-variant frontotemporal dementia (rtvFTD), and 29 cognitively-healthy controls. Daily-life hearing function was assessed using the modified Amsterdam Inventory for Auditory Disability and Ha

Using the Digits-In-Noise Test to Estimate Age-Related Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVE: Age-related hearing loss is common in the elderly population. Timely detection and targeted counseling can lead to adequate treatment with hearing aids. The Digits-In-Noise (DIN) test was developed as a relatively simple test to assess hearing acuity. It is a potentially powerful test for the screening of large populations, including the elderly. However, until to date, no sensitivity or specificity rates for detecting hearing loss were reported in a general elderly population. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of the DIN test to screen for mild and moderate hear

[Remote masking as a test of cochlear conductive hearing losses (author's transl)].

The authors studied the remote masking (RM) in patients with Menière's disorder during the hearing loss fluctuations produced either by the disorder or by the glycerol test (Klockhoff). The RM was recorded for pulsed tones of 250, 500 and 1 000 Hz; the masker was a continuous narrow-band noise centered at 3 000 Hz, with 305 Hz (2 875-3 180 Hz) bandwidth, delivered at an overall level of 98 dB SPL. The results showed that the RM decreases during the acute phase, i.e. when the hearing loss increases, and, increases if the glycerol tests do not significantly modify the RM value. They seem to conf
