Is Heat Intolerance State or Trait?

The existing literature suggests two standpoints in defining heat intolerance, which are heat tolerance as state or trait. The former bases its case in the plasticity of human physiology, where one may gain or lose the adaptations associated with heat acclimatization and the ability to tolerate heat is considered transient. This phenomenon is exemplified in the recovery process of exertional heat stroke (EHS) patients in that victims of EHS are able to eventually regain heat tolerance and return to activity without recurrent episodes of EHS. On the other hand, an increasing number of reports i

Potential of in vivo real-time gastric gas profiling: a pilot evaluation of heat-stress and modulating dietary cinnamon effect in an animal model.

Gastroenterologists are still unable to differentiate between some of the most ordinary disorders of the gut and consequently patients are misdiagnosed. We have developed a swallowable gas sensor capsule for addressing this. The gases of the gut are the by-product of the fermentation processes during digestion, affected by the gut state and can consequently provide the needed information regarding the health of the gut. Here we present the first study on gas sensor capsules for revealing the effect of a medical supplement in an animal (pig) model. We characterise the real-time alterations of g

Chaperone co-inducer BGP-15 inhibits histone deacetylases and enhances the heat shock response through increased chromatin accessibility.

Defects in cellular protein homeostasis are associated with many severe and prevalent pathological conditions such as neurodegenerative diseases, muscle dystrophies, and metabolic disorders. One way to counteract these defects is to improve the protein homeostasis capacity through induction of the heat shock response. Despite numerous attempts to develop strategies for chemical activation of the heat shock response by heat shock transcription factor 1 (HSF1), the underlying mechanisms of drug candidates' mode of action are poorly understood. To lower the threshold for the heat shock response a

Effect of heat stress and feeding management on growth performance and physiological responses of finishing pigs.

This study aimed to determine whether pig responses to heat stress (HS) were directly due to heat exposure (regardless of feeding level and pattern) or were indirectly due to the reduction of feed intake (FI) and to determine if increasing feeding frequency (splitting heat increments) can improve pig response to HS. A total of 48 pigs (66.1 ± 1.7 kg) were allocated to four groups in three replicates. After 7 d in thermoneutral (TN) conditions (22 °C; period 1 [P1; day -7 to -1]), pigs were placed in either TN or HS (32 °C) conditions for 20 d (period 2 [P2; day 0 to 19]). The diet was provided

Nutritional strategies for managing the heat-stressed dairy cow.

Heat stress results from the animal's inability to dissipate sufficient heat to maintain homeothermy. Environmental factors, including ambient temperature, radiant energy, relative humidity, and metabolic heat associated with maintenance and productive processes, contribute to heat stress. The focus of this article is to identify environmental and metabolic factors that contribute to excessive heat load, describe how disruption of homeothermy alters physiologic systems of the cow, and discuss nutritional modifications that help to maintain homeostasis or prevent nutrient deficiencies that resu

The health effects of extreme heat.

Extreme heat is a significant direct health threat from climate change, with rising temperatures and frequent heatwaves increasingly stressing communities and health services across Africa. High baseline temperatures, widespread outdoor labour, limited cooling access and structural vulnerabilities heighten population exposure. The physiological impacts are severe: from extreme heat overwhelming thermoregulation, leading to dehydration, cardiovascular strain, direct cellular injury and potentially rapid progression to heat exhaustion, to the most severe and dangerous form, heat stroke, which is

Salivary heat shock protein 70 as a potential non-invasive biomarker of environmental thermal stress in dairy cattle.

The present study aims to explore the potential biomarker application of salivary heat shock 70 kDa protein in detecting thermal stress in dairy animals noninvasively. The study spans for 45 days during the mid-summer season (April-May), involving twelve multiparous non-pregnant adult Jersey crossbred cows by randomly allocating them into groups (six animals in each group). The control animals were maintained in the shed, whereas the thermal stress group animals were exposed to environment heat between 10:00 h to 16.00 h and they were feed and watered ad libitum. During the experimental period

Heat- and cold-induced injuries in athletes: evaluation and management.

Both extreme heat and cold can be challenging for athletes during training and competition. One role of the team physician is to educate coaches and athletes on the risks of exposure to these conditions and how to best prevent and manage their adverse effects. Heat illness varies in degree from mild to severe, with the most severe forms being potentially fatal. Cold exposure can result in systemic effects and peripheral injury to the extremities.

Impact of exercise and metabolic disorders on heat shock proteins and vascular inflammation.

Heat shock proteins (Hsp) play critical roles in the body's self-defense under a variety of stresses, including heat shock, oxidative stress, radiation, and wounds, through the regulation of folding and functions of relevant cellular proteins. Exercise increases the levels of Hsp through elevated temperature, hormones, calcium fluxes, reactive oxygen species (ROS), or mechanical deformation of tissues. Isotonic contractions and endurance- type activities tend to increase Hsp60 and Hsp70. Eccentric muscle contractions lead to phosphorylation and translocation of Hsp25/27. Exercise-induced trans

Changing faces of stress: Impact of heat and arsenite treatment on the composition of stress granules.

Stress granules (SGs), hallmarks of the cellular adaptation to stress, promote survival, conserve cellular energy, and are fully dissolved upon the cessation of stress treatment. Different stresses can initiate the assembly of SGs, but arsenite and heat are the best studied of these stresses. The composition of SGs and posttranslational modifications of SG proteins differ depending on the type and severity of the stress insult, methodology used, cell line, and presence of overexpressed and tagged proteins. A group of 18 proteins showing differential localization to SGs in heat- and arsenite-st

Biochemical and histological alterations in the liver of albino rats fed a carbohydrate-rich diet under chronic heat and humidity stress.

The effects of short-term heat stress on normal-diet rats are well-known, but the impact of long-term heat and humidity on rats fed a carbohydrate-rich diet remains unexplored. The study examined the alterations caused by chronic heat and humidity stress in liver enzymes, blood biochemistry, and histology in rats fed a carbohydrate-rich diet. One hundred and eighty adult rats were divided into routine diet (RD) and carbohydrate-rich diet (CRD) groups, further divided into no stress, heat, and humidity stress conditions. Heat and humidity stress were applied daily for 4 h over 30 days. Blood an

Stress protein inclusions in cerebral vessels in dialysis encephalopathy.

Dialysis encephalopathy, a complication of long-term haemodialysis, is a syndrome characterized by progressive dementia, myoclonus, dysarthria and ataxia associated with high serum and brain levels of aluminium. Expression of heat-shock or stress proteins, including ubiquitin can be induced in cell culture experiments by aluminium. We report immunohistochemical studies of heat shock protein (HSP) expression in the frontal cortex of three patients with dialysis dementia. Immunolabelling with antibody to the 72 kD heat shock protein revealed punctate granules in most endothelial cells of cortica

Loss of malin, but not laforin, results in compromised autophagic flux and proteasomal dysfunction in cells exposed to heat shock.

Heat stress to a cell leads to the activation of heat shock response, which is required for the management of misfolded and unfolded proteins. Macroautophagy and proteasome-mediated degradation are the two cellular processes that degrade polyubiquitinated, misfolded proteins. Contrasting pieces of evidence exist on the effect of heat stress on the activation of the above-mentioned degradative pathways. Laforin phosphatase and malin E3 ubiquitin ligase, the two proteins defective in Lafora neurodegenerative disorder, are involved in cellular stress response pathways and are required for the act

[Disorders developing under combined exposure to ionizing radiation and stress].

The combined influence of gamma-radiation in a dose of 1 Gy and restriction stress was studied in experiments on 62 rats. The severity of gastric mucosal erosive and ulcerative lesions, the rate of lipid peroxidation, and hepatic homogenate heat generation were determined by microcalorimetry. The developing disorders were corrected by administering sodium succinate. Animal radiation resulted in modified stress-induced gastric mucosal lesions which appeared as increases in the total number of ulcerations. The use of sodium succinate was followed by less severity of erosive and ulcerative gastri

Depending on the stress, histone deacetylase inhibitors act as heat shock protein co-inducers in motor neurons and potentiate arimoclomol, exerting neuroprotection through multiple mechanisms in ALS models.

Upregulation of heat shock proteins (HSPs) is an approach to treatment of neurodegenerative disorders with impaired proteostasis. Many neurons, including motor neurons affected in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), are relatively resistant to stress-induced upregulation of HSPs. This study demonstrated that histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors enable the heat shock response in cultured spinal motor neurons, in a stress-dependent manner, and can improve the efficacy of HSP-inducing drugs in murine spinal cord cultures subjected to thermal or proteotoxic stress. The effect of particular HDAC

Induction of heat shock protein synthesis in human skin fibroblasts in response to oxidative stress: regulation by a natural antioxidant from rosemary extract.

Reactive oxygen species have been implicated in the pathogenesis of the severe connective tissue damage present in several photodermatologic disorders, including drug-induced phototoxicity, porphyrias and photoaging. Oxidative stress has been shown to alter the expression of mammalian antioxidant enzymes and to enhance numerous transcription factors, including nuclear factor-kappa B, stress-activated protein kinase and heat shock factor. The latter represents the transcription factor for the synthesis of cytoprotective proteins called heat shock proteins. In this study, we investigated the rol

Stress-Induced Neuron Remodeling Reveals Differential Interplay Between Neurexin and Environmental Factors in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Neurexins are neuronal adhesion molecules important for synapse maturation, function, and plasticity. Neurexins have been genetically associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and schizophrenia, but can have variable penetrance and phenotypic severity. Heritability studies indicate that a significant percentage of risk for ASD and schizophrenia includes environmental factors, highlighting a poorly understood interplay between genetic and environmental factors. The singular Caenorhabditis elegans ortholog of human neurexins, nrx-1, controls experie

A fourteen-year analysis of thermal stress in Kuwait.

The Arabian Peninsula region, particularly the Gulf Cooperative Countries (GCC) experience extreme heat with a warming trend and frequent and intense heat waves. Summer maximum temperatures (June, July, and August 'JJA') routinely soar above 50 °C. In this study, we analyzed the heat index (HI) for every hour of the last 14 years (2012-2025) in Kuwait. Heat Index is the combined metric incorporating ambient air temperature and relative humidity (RH) - or the ''feels like'' temperature. Specifically, we used the US National Weather Service (NWS) HI and classified three risk-threshold systems: H
